Beavers look to (hopefully) healthy season
By ANNE M. PETERSON
Associated Press
Oregon State is hoping to finally
realize the promise of its 2015
recruiting class that featured Tres
Tinkle, Stephen Thompson Jr., and
Drew Eubanks.
All three are healthy going into
this season.
Tinkle, a 6-foot-8 forward, was
sidelined for much of last season
with a wrist injury, one of a series
of unfortunate events to befall the
Beavers. Oregon State finished 5-27
and at the bottom of the Pac-12 with
just one conference win.
“It was hard to get into a groove,”
coach Wayne Tinkle said. “Even
though we lost four guys early,
about the same time, the end of
November, it’s just we were dealing
with different things from week to
week. We were so young, so short
on depth. We just had no margin for
error.”
Tres Tinkle, the coach’s son,
broke his right wrist in the sixth
game of the season. He was aver-
aging 20.2 points, 8.3 rebounds
and 2.3 assists. He was granted a
medical hardship and will play this
season as a redshirt sophomore.
Oregon State’s lone conference
win came at home against Utah,
68-67, on Feb. 19. The Beavers
were the 12th seed going into the
Pac-12 tournament and fell in the
opening game to California.
Eubanks , a 6-foot-10 forward,
started in all 32 games last season,
averaging 14.5 points, 8.3 rebounds,
1.2 assists and 2.2 blocks per game.
Thompson averaged 16.3 points,
4.3 rebounds and three assists,
while making 57 3-pointers.
“I was proud of the guys hanging
in there, because there were only a
couple of games where we were
blown out from the jump. We were
in it for 32 minutes even against
the best teams in the league,” the
elder Tinkle said. “We just ran out
of gas.”
The Beavers return 10 players,
including the starters for most of
last season: Thompson, Eubanks,
JaQuori McLaughlin, Kendal
Manuel and Gligorije Rakocevic.
Oregon State added six
newcomers, including forward
Seth Berger, a graduate transfer
from UMass, and Ethan Thompson,
Stephen’s little brother.
BARCELONA: The Beavers
were staying in a hotel in Barce-
lona, Spain, near where a terrorist
drove a van into pedestrians,
killing 14 people. The team was
having a pregame dinner when the
attack occurred, and players could
see some of the scene through
the windows. The group thought
about going home, but the logistics
were difficult, Wayne Tinkle said
later. “We had to stay together as
a group,” he said. They went on to
win all four exhibition games they
played.
“I think we all learned a lot about
ourselves, and we left a little bit of
ourselves behind,” he said.
OUTLOOK: The Beavers were
picked to finish eighth in the Pac-12
in the preseason media poll.
ROUNDUP: Riverside enters postseason undefeated after Saturday’s draw
Continued from 1B
the Buckaroos out of the 5A state champion-
ships.
Sandy entered the match with momentum
on its side. The Pioneers (15-6) were coming
off of a four-game winning streak, dropping
only three sets in the process. The Bucks
(15-7) also entered off a big win, a four-set
play-in victory over Hillsboro, but couldn’t
harness those efforts Saturday.
Sandy will face Corvallis on Nov. 3 at
Liberty High School in Hillsboro. The match
will be played on Court 2 at 3:15 p.m
COUNTY CHRISTIAN 3, ECHO 0 —
Echo was ready for Round 1 of the 1A state
championship after a big 3-0 victory at home
Wednesday. But the tables turned when the
Cougars went to visit County Christian.
Echo was handed the same fate it delivered
just three days ago, and fell in three straight
sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-17).
County Christian will play North Clack-
amas Christian/South Wasco County on Nov.
3 at Ridgeview High School in Redmond.
The match will begin on Court 2 at 3:15 p.m.
NORTH DOUGLAS 3, HELIX 2 —
Helix worked to keep its season afloat, but
the five-set match ended in favor of North
Douglas.
The Grizzlies (21-9) came back to force a
fifth set after dropping the first two 25-20 and
25-14, respectively.
Helix held off North Douglass in the third
set, winning 20-25, and squeaked by in the
fourth set, 25-27. The Grizzles were close to
coming away with the victory, but gave up the
fifth and final set 17-15.
North Douglas will move on to play
Joseph on Nov. 3 at Ridgeview High School
in Redmond. The match will begin at 1:15
p.m. on Court 1.
BOYS SOCCER
RIVERSIDE — The Riverside Pirates still
have yet to be defeated this season, but their
perfect record was tarnished Saturday after a
2-2 draw against Catlin Gabel.
Riverside still holds on to the No. 1
ranking, and will host Creswell in the first
round of the 3A/2A/1A Boys Soccer State
Championship Tournament on Nov. 1.
DAWGS: Hermiston girls wrap up 2017 season after play-in loss Saturday
Continued from 1B
of the half until the Bulldogs
scored again. During that
time, Milwaukie made things
interesting when it got one
past Hermiston goalkeeper
Juan Navarrete in the 71st
minute.
The Mustangs had a few
chances at the equalizer, but
Navarrete wasn’t going to let
anymore past him.
Hermiston then scored its
insurance goal and sealed its
postseason fate.
“I was definitely expecting
a tough match,” Harshberger
said. “It was definitely hard
to gauge. Always coming
into the postseason you look
at their record, who they
played and any team coming
out of Portland will be tough.
We just excepted a physical
match and they brought
it. My boys weathered the
storm and took it to them.
“Sometimes these play-in
games can be as hard as a
semifinal or quarterfinal,”
he added. “They brought it
and they stepped up to that
challenge and they didn’t
back down from it at all.”
Hermiston will face
Hillsboro in Round 1 of
the 5A Boys Soccer State
Championships. Hillsboro
will host the match on Nov.
1. The start time has yet to be
determined.

GIRLS SOCCER
The girls team was up
first in the play-in double-
header, but unlike the boys
their season came to an end
Saturday evening. Hermiston
hosted La Salle, and the
Falcons escaped Kennison
Field with a 3-1 win over the
Bulldogs.
La Salle took control early,
but Hermiston did manage to
get into Falcon’s half a few
times in the first quarter of
play. The Bulldogs chances
were cut short by a lack of
execution and a physical La
Salle defense.
The defensive effort on
both teams kept the game
scoreless for a good part of
the first half. Hermiston’s
Heidi Fuentes had some good
stops to keep La Salle at bay,
but the Falcons finally broke
through in the 24th minute,
as a header from La Salle’s
Audrey Schelb off a corner
kick put the Falcons up 1-0.
They would enter halftime
up by one more score after a
Hermiston handball in its
own box led to a penalty kick.
Megan Lyver set up a nice
fake that sent Hermiston’s
goalkeeper Lanie Gomez in
the opposite direction of the
ball.
Four Bulldogs were
missing from Saturday’s
contest:
Jael
Fuentes,
Amanda Nygard and Daniela
and Adriana Rodriguez.
Hermiston missed their pres-
ence, especially Nygard’s
speed up front but a handful
of junior varsity players
stepped in to help.
“We had a few holes but
we asked a couple of the JV
girls to come up and they
stepped up and they were

Hermiston’s Cyndy Lind watches the soccer ball after
heading it during Saturday’s play-in game against La
good for us,” head coach
Danielle MacBride said.
After the break, the Bull-
dogs were finally able to get
on the board of what seemed
like an impossible shot by
Hannah Thompson in the
54th minute.
Johnson controlled a short
pass on the far right side of
the field, and then sent the
ball sailing into the opposite
side of the goal. The ball
barely caught the net, and
then bounced in to cut Herm-
iston’s deficit.
“She does that, I don’t
know where it comes from,”
MacBride said of Thompson.
“There’s not much more you
can say to it. I told David
(Wattenburger), ‘I want to
see her do it again, prove it.’
At the same time, a goal is a
goal. We’ll take it.”
But it was too little too late
for the Bulldogs, as La Salle
scored its third and final goal
just minutes into the second
half. Again it was a header
from Schelb off a corner that
sealed the deal.
“Honestly, I don’t know if
there was one or two things
that we could say we didn’t
do well,” MacBride said.
“We were a little lax mentally
in the beginning and we’ve
kind of always struggled with
set pieces like that, defending
them and they scored two
goals off them and that hand
ball was unfortunate and it
happens so it was anybody’s
game aside from those little
mental letdowns.”
The girls will have a year
off to prepare and transition
into the WIAA.
