MISSION
Museum program facilitates discussion about being an American
Event is November 4 at
Tamástslikt Cultural Institute
East Oregonian
Contributed by Tamástslikt Cultural Institute
The Oregon Humanities’ Conversation Project asks
“What Does it Mean to be American?” The free
facilitated discussion is Saturday, Nov. 4 at Tamástslikt
Cultural Institute, Mission.
The United States has been described
as a melting pot with its diversity of
citizens — the Conversation Project
asks “What Does it Mean to be Amer-
ican?”
As part of the Oregon Humanities’
program, Ellen M. Knutson will
facilitate a discussion to take a look at
the complicated question. Pepsi Prime-
time @ the Museum hosts the event
Saturday, Nov. 4 from 1-2:30 p.m. at
Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, located
near Wildhorse Resort & Casino in
Mission. Admission is free and will
include snacks and beverages.
The United States is a culturally
diverse nation with residents who can
trace their heritage to countries across
the globe. And the country’s diversity
is projected to continue to increase over
the next several decades.
A variety of discussion starters
will be posed, including: Given the
differences of race, ethnicity, place,
religion, wealth, language, education
and ideology that exist in the U.S., what
are the things that unite us as a nation?
How do we understand what it means
to be American and what do we hold
valuable?
The public is invited to share their
ideas about what it means to be Amer-
ican — and to hear others’ thoughts.
Identifying differences and points of
connection may lead people toward
the ideal stated in our nation’s motto: E
pluribus unum (out of many, one).
Knutson is a Portland-based research
associate at the Charles F. Kettering
Foundation. She is a key member of the
research team comprised of Russian
and U.S. colleagues developing
libraries as centers for public dialogue
and deliberation. Also, she is an adjunct
assistant professor at the School of
Information Sciences at University of
Illinois, where she teaches a course on
community engagement to students in

Brass Fire jazzes things up with
Hermiston High School band
PENDLETON — The Pendleton Public
Library is hosting its annual Pumpkin
Decorating Contest. People need to drop
their pumpkins off as soon as possible to start
receiving votes from other library patrons.
The decor needs to represent a book title or
character.
The pumpkin can not be carved. People are
to use paint or markers, or glue paper or fabric
to decorate them. Also, don’t write your name
anywhere on the pumpkin.
Winners will be selected in multiple age
groups, including adults. For more information,
contact 541-966-0380, mary.finney@ci.pendleton.

band, will be performing with the Hermiston High
School jazz band.

the online master’s program. Knutson
also serves on the advisory committee
for the American Library Association’s
Center for Civic Life.
The Conversation Project brings
Oregonians together to talk — across
differences, beliefs and backgrounds
— about important issues and ideas.
The goal is to connect people to ideas
and to each other, not to push an agenda
or arrive at a consensus. The Project is
built on the fact that conversation is
a powerful medium to invite diverse
perspectives, explore challenging ques-
tions and strive for just communities.
