On orders from the war department, Major
Richard Parks of the United States army is
now here for the purpose of inspecting a local
site for another proposed national army camp
site. The site recommended to the department
is in the triangle south of the Columbia river
and west of the Umatilla, about three miles
from Hermiston. The location was first
suggested to the war department by the Herm-
iston Commercial Club last spring and now
further data as to the availability of the place
is being submitted. The site consists of many
thousands of acres of level, unused land, with
good drainage, ample water abundant in the
Columbia or from Minnehaha springs and on
top of this the winter season is such that open
air drilling may be carried on most of the time.

A Pendleton man shot and killed himself
Saturday night as police closed in on him in
connection with the theft of a Walla Walla coin
collection. The victim was Fred E. Sanders,
45. Inspector Don Woods of the Walla Walla
police said Sanders had carried out about 20
boxes of coins from the home of Mr. and
Mrs. David Mitchell and was bringing out
more, when the Mitchells returned home
and surprised him. Sanders fled in his car. A
nearby patrolman pursued him in his squad
car and trapped him on a dead-end street. As
officer Ronald Brookshore was making the
arrest, Sanders took the gun from under the
seat of his car and shot himself. He died one
hour and 20 minutes later.

Leon Reese says founders of Peace
Lutheran Church — Germans who settled
about 10 miles north of Pendleton — must
have been tenacious people. Or just plain
stubborn, he adds, with a smile. Reese
and Leeroy Ehlers are co-chairmen for
the Pendleton church’s centennial this
weekend, which will feature an open house,
banquet and worship. The church today is
located at Northwest Ninth and Carden.
Farmers near Myrick Station wanted to
establish a German Lutheran church and
met to consider organizing on Oct. 9,
1892. They returned two weeks later and
adopted a constitution. Twenty men signed
the charter for “Evangelisch Lutherische
Frieden-Kirche.” The exact translation is
Evangelical Lutheran Peace Church.
