else. They just kept moving
the chains and hats off to
(Larson) and the offensive
line for blocking.”
But as dominant as the
Cougars were, the Buckaroos
(3-3, 2-2) had a few prime
chances that could have
changed the outcome of the
game. After forcing a Cougar
punt to start the third quarter,
Pendleton drove the ball to
the Cougars 35 before the
offense stalled out and had to
punt. And then just three plays
later, the Bucks recovered a
Larson fumble at the Cougars
30 with 5:13 left in the third
quarter.
However, the Buckaroos
came away empty-handed.
Pendleton picked up one first
down before the offense again
stalled at the 19 and turned it
over on downs.
“We just have to capitalize
on things like that fumble,”
said Bower, who finished 10
for 21 passing for 139 yards
and one interception. “We
have to put the ball in the end
zone and if you’re not going
to capitalize on things like that
you’re not going to win.”
Pendleton forced another
Cougars punt early in the
fourth quarter, getting the
ball back on its own 32 with
11:04 left to play. But the
Cougars defense tightened up
and forced a three-and-out.
That set up a 16-play, 78-yard
back-breaking drive for the
Cougars offense as Larson
shifted his way through Pend-
leton’s defense for a 14-yard
score to ice the game.
“They’re a good football
team, we knew that coming
in,” Davis said, “but we had
our opportunities and I think
it sent some of Webb’s
passes long and may have
caused a few wrinkles in
play calling, the Vikings
were able to establish the
run early which opened
things up later on.
“We were trying to
establish the run game,”
Webb said. “If we do that
it sucks guys into the box
and opens it up for throws.
Establishing the run game is
just about our first thought.”
Trent Durfey led the
team with 11 carries for
75 yards. While Alvarez
racked up 78 yards on just
nine carries.
Defensively,
Trent
Durfey continued to play
a big role. His size, speed,
and physicality set him a
part and allowed him to
make big stops.
“He’s the heart and
soul on the defense,” Dan
Durfey said. “He’s the guy
that controls everything out
there, lets the guys know
what’s going on, he’s the
leader.”
Riverside was held to
only 90 yards in the air
with Hegar completing
44-percent of his passes.
The Pirates did pick up
yards on the ground thanks
to the efforts of senior
Aramis Corpus and sopho-
more JR Roque, but the duo
only managed to record 66
combined yards.
The reason for Umatil-
la’s defensive success is
simple, Trent Durfey says.
“Do your job,” he said
after the win.

Vikings next touchdown.
After a bad snap from
Riverside’s punter on fourth
down, Umatilla recovered
the ball to bring Webb back
out. Twenty six yards and
six plays later, he ran for
two yards to extend the
Vikings lead to 16-0.
Both teams opted for the
two-point conversion after
each score.
Riverside struggled to
contain the Vikings in the
first quarter, and couldn’t
quite find its rhythm on
offense but a momentum
changer to open the second
quarter stopped Umatilla’s
chance at a shutout.
The Pirates defense
recovered a fumble on the
26-yard line to put them
in prime position to score
but unsuccessful runs and
missed targets by Hegar
brought up 4th-and-nine.
Hegar was final able to find
a receiver down the field
and recorded a 23-yard
touchdown pass to put
Riverside within eight
points.
The team’s traded touch-
downs as Umatilla scored
on the ensuing drive to
extend its lead to 22-8.
The Vikings scored one
more time before the half.
Sophomore running back
Pedro Alvarez ran in a 36
yarder to add six points to
the board.
The ground game was
as much of a factor as the
passing game. Winds were
gusting throughout most of
the night, but it worked in
Umatilla’s favor. Although

that’s what hurts in the gut
more than anything else. We
had our opportunities to play
with, if not beat a really, really
good football team and just
came up short.”
Pendleton’s
defense
was not at full-strength in
the game, as junior outside
linebacker Willie Camp was
out after having an emergency
appendectomy on Wednesday,
and will keep him out for
at least two more weeks.
Then later, the injury bug bit

awkwardly and missed most
of the fourth quarter with
a right leg injury, and is
expected to miss some time.
But with all that, Davis
was proud of the way his
team continually fought in the
game, even as fatigued and
depleted as they were.
“I’ll say it 100 times
about this group, they’re
high-character kids and not
once have I seen them fold
up shop and give up,” Davis
said. “Did we wear out? Yes.
But they didn’t give up and
that’s something to continue
to build on. I’m excited about
where this football team is,
we were right there with a top
3 team in the state ... our goal
of being a playoff team is still
in-tact and now we’ll go try
and take care of Hood River.”

VALLEY 38 — At Echo,
the Cougars tallied 670
rushing yards and 10
total touchdowns as they
defeated the Powder Valley
Badgers 68-38 on Friday
night.
Quarterback
Devan
Craig took advantage of
some open running lanes
as he led the team with
402 rushing yards and five
touchdowns, while also
throwing for two more
scores.
Behind
Craig,
Damien Curiel ran for 102
yards and two touchdowns
while catching an 81-yard
touchdown pass, and Zack
Gehrke added another 80
yards and one touchdown.
Kyle Ranger also hauled
in a 5-yard touchdown pass
from Craig.
On defense, Echo (4-2
overall, 2-1 Special District
1) gave up 180 rushing yards
and 158 passing yards, but
picked up three intercep-
tions from Michael Pointer,
Ty Mulder and Gehrke, and
three big fumble recoveries
to help keep the Badgers at
bay. The Cougars also were
down a few players with 13
on Friday, forcing kids to
play in different positions
and see more time on the
field than some were used
to.
“The boys played hard
and they were gassed at
the end,” Echo coach Rick
Thew said. “I’m pretty
proud of them tonight.”
