HERMISTON — After the Herm-
iston football team’s 40-14 win at home
last week, head coach David Faaeteete
had some immediate goals.
He wanted to focus on three things
in the upcoming week of practice that
plagued the Bulldogs (3-2 overall, 2-1
Special District 1) despite earning their
second league win. They including
play at the defensive line, special teams
execution, and ball
leverage with the
Football
younger players.
When facing a
winless team in the
Ridgeview Ravens
on Friday, Herm-
Hermiston
iston will likely have
Bulldogs
success on special
(3-2, 2-1)
teams and the No.
2’s and 3’s may get
some playing time
if they Bulldogs’
manage to get to a
Ridgeview
Ravens
comfortable lead,
(0-5, 0-3)
but it will be the
defensive line that
• Friday, 7 p.m.
• At Ridgeview HS will be tested on the
road in Redmond.
The Ravens (0-5,
0-3) have struggled
since their 13-1 state championship
season in 2013. Ridgeview has won
eight total games in the past three years,
and only two of those were during league
play. The biggest problem has been its
offense, which has lacked balance these
past few seasons. While this season the
Ravens have yet to prove they have any
sort of stability, they do posses a weapon

PHOENIX — Three bags,

And you wouldn’t believe
who got in on all the fun for the
Arizona Diamondbacks.
Spirited
reliever Archie
Bradley hit a stunning triple
in the seventh inning, driving

in two runs with one of four
three-baggers by Arizona that
sent the Diamondbacks past the
Colorado Rockies 11-8 in the
National League wild-card game
Wednesday night.
Paul Goldschmidt launched
an early three-run homer and the
Diamondbacks built a 6-0 lead
before ace Zack Greinke faltered.
Colorado climbed back into it and
cut it to 8-7 when Nolan Arenado
and Trevor Story hit back-to-back
homers in the eighth off Bradley,
perhaps exhausted from hustling
around the bases and shouting in
excitement to giddy teammates.
But then A.J. Pollock knocked
in two runs with Arizona’s fourth
triple, this one off closer Greg
Holland, as the Diamondbacks
scored three times in their half of
the eighth to fi nally put away a
wild game.

Mud of war
A team of sophomores called ‘The
Prisoners’ engages in a slimy tug of
war Wednesday during Pendleton
High School’s Mud Wars at the Happy
Canyon Arena.
PENDLETON — One of Pendleton’s
main goals prior to the 2017 season was to
become a playoff team again for the fi rst
time since 2014. With the season halfway
over, the Buckaroos are halfway to that
goal.
Heading into Week 6, Pendleton (3-2
overall, 2-1 Special District 1) sits in a tie
with Hermiston for third place in Special
District 1 and are clinging to one of the
four playoff spots in the district. Beneath
the surface, Pendleton’s playoff resume
right now is relatively weak with zero
wins against teams with winning records,
including two wins against winless teams
(Ridgeview, Redmond). Pendleton’s time
to cement itself in the district and in the
state starts Friday as it faces its biggest test
yet, hosting Mountain View homecoming
night at the Round-Up arena.
“We’re going to have to beat the good
teams to be a playoff team and this is a
huge one for us,” Pendleton head coach
Erik Davis said. “We know going into

(3-2, 2-1)
this if we have any shot at a conference
title this is a big one. We expect Mountain
View to be the team we know them to be,
but we’re an improved football team as
well and we’re excited about where our
momentum is going into this Friday.”
Mountain View (5-0, 3-0) comes
roaring into Pendleton unbeaten on the
season and are ranked No. 3 in Class 5A,
fresh off a dominant 35-13 victory over
Summit. The Cougars have perhaps the
best running game in the state, powered
by a big, stout offensive line and junior
running back Jonas Larson who already
eclipsed the 1,000 rushing yard mark on
the season.
Larson torched Summit for 269 yards
and four touchdowns last week and piled
up 187 yards with one score in Mountain
View’s 28-7 win over Hermiston on Sept.

Seattle Storm hires new coach
NEW YORK (AP) — Dan Hughes is the new
coach of the Seattle Storm.
Hughes spent 11 years coaching the San
Antonio Stars before retiring after the 2016 season.
The 62-year-old replaces Gary Klop-
penburg, who was Seattle’s interim
coach after the team fi red Jenny
Boucek on Aug. 10. Kloppenburg
helped guide the Storm to the play-
offs as the No. 8 seed where they lost
in the opening round to Dallas.
Hughes
Seattle has a solid nucleus for
Hughes to work with led by Sue Bird,
Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd. The Storm, who
were 15-19 this year, also have the fi fth pick in a
loaded draft next April.
Hughes has coached more WNBA games (524)
than anyone in league history and is 237-287 in his
career. That’s the third most wins in the league. He
won WNBA Coach of the Year twice, garnering
the honor in 2001 when he was with Cleveland and
then again in 2007 in San Antonio.
“It felt scary in the locker
room when I couldn’t really
breathe at the time ... It felt
all right at the time, so I
kept on playing. Once the
game was over and the fact
the adrenaline wore off,
and, man, the pain got a lot
more. I went to the hospital,
I think, jus to make sure
everything was all right,
man.”

Defending champion Penguins
drop season opener in OT to Blues
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Alex Pietrangelo
beat Matt Murray 1:15 into overtime to give the
St. Louis Blues a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh
Penguins on Wednesday night in the
season opener for both teams.
The Blues recovered after letting
a two-goal, third-period lead slip
away when Pietrangelo’s shot from
the slot hit Murray and slipped under
the crossbar for his second goal.
Paul Stastny had a goal and an assist for the
Blues, Brayden Schenn and Colton Parayko also
scored, and Jake Allen fi nished with 34 saves.
Sidney Crosby and Conor Sheary scored 54
seconds apart in the third to tie it, but the Penguins
couldn’t complete the comeback on a night the
two-time defending Stanley Cup champions raised
the franchise’s fi fth Cup banner to the rafters at
PPG Paints Arena. Justin Schultz and Olli Maatta
also scored for the Penguins.
