Pirates pile on goals in rout of Bulldogs
By ALEXIS MANSANAREZ
East Oregonian
BOARDMAN — After
sneaking out a non-league
win over Mac-Hi earlier
in the week, the Riverside
boys soccer team got back
to league play on Saturday,
wanting to keep their
unbeaten streak going.
The Pirates did so easily
against Nyssa at Don
Hendrix Memorial Field
at Riverside High School,
with a 14-3 victory over the
Bulldogs to move Riverside
to 7-0 on the season, and 2-0
in league play. The No. 2
Pirates controlled the entire
80 minutes, scoring fi ve of

their goals in the fi rst half
and having little to no trouble
against the Bulldogs (3-4
overall, 1-1 Special District
4). Which was something
Riverside never doubted.
“We expected that to be
easy,” head coach Francisco
Velazquez said.
Velazquez and the team
prepared for the match by
studying their opponents,
and with Nyssa making the
three and a half hour trip
after losing three of its last
fi ve games the Pirates knew
they had the advantage.
Senior Jose Peralta was
the star of the show and
fi nished the day with six
goals of his own. He scored
Riverside’s fi rst two goals in
the 6th and 7th minute. The
fi rst was on a free kick, and
he followed that up will an
easy tip in after some action
in front of the goal.
Peralta would add one
more goal to the board before
the half and fellow senior
Ricardo Navarro and Julian
Elvert Jimenez would each
tally a score.
The Pirates went into half
time nearly shutting out the
Bulldogs, but a late foul in
the box extended play until
Nyssa knocked one in past
Riverside goalkeeper Kevin
Ruelas.
After the break, the
Bulldogs scored again on
a penalty kick just seconds
after the Pirates put their
sixth goal on the board.
Nyssa scored one more
goal on its own accord
before Riverside unleashed
a scoring fury in the fi nal 25
minutes. The Bulldogs had to
ultimately play a man down
after two of their players
were injured, including

Seattle salvages ugly
first half for blowout win

SEATTLE — It’s a script that’s become too
familiar for the Seattle Seahawks.
Look awful for the fi rst half. Look like one of the
best teams in football in the second half.
“It’s the same thing that always happens. Slow
start out of the gate and for whatever reason we
pick it up the third and fourth quarter,” Seattle wide
receiver Doug Baldwin said.
Did the Seahawks ever pick it up, scoring 36
points in the second half to roll past the Indianapolis
Colts 46-18 on Sunday night. The Seahawks used
three total touchdowns from Russell Wilson — two
passing and one running — a dynamic 30-yard
touchdown sprint from J.D. McKissic and Bobby
Wagner’s fumble return for a TD to blitz the Colts
in the second half.
But the slow starts are a problem that after four
games appears to be a trend. The Seahawks have

EUGENE — Oregon quarterback Justin
Herbert is out “for a while” because of a
fractured collarbone, coach Willie Taggart
said Monday.
Taggart also said at his weekly news
conference that junior linebacker Kaulana
Apelu is out for the season with an ankle
fracture.
Herbert, running back Royce Freeman
and receiver Dillon Mitchell, all starters
for the Ducks, were injured in the fi rst half
of Oregon’s 45-24 victory Saturday over
California. Taggart did not mention the other
players by name but said “everyone else is
day-to-day.”
Herbert left the game near the end of the
fi rst quarter after a 7-yard touchdown run.
He fi nished 7-of-8 for 81 yards and also had
a touchdown pass.
Backup quarterback Taylor Alie left
the game with an injury during the fourth
quarter, paving the way for third-string
quarterback Braxton Burmeister to make his
fi rst college appearance.

Seahawks lose Carson to leg fracture
Associated Press
RENTON, Wash. — Seattle
Seahawks’ RB Chris Carson will
undergo surgery Tuesday for a severe
high-ankle sprain suffered when his
left leg was pinned in a pile in the
fourth quarter of the Seahawks’ win
over the Indianapolis Colts.
Carson also has a small fracture just
below his left knee, but the surgery will
be to stabilize the ankle ligaments that
were damaged, coach Pete Carroll said.
Carson led a long list of injury concerns
for Seattle, which may also be without
DE Cliff Avril, LT Rees Odhiambo and
CB Jeremy Lane for Sunday’s meeting
with the Rams.
Carson was placed on injured reserve
Monday, although Carroll left open the
possibility that Carson may return later
in the season. Carson, a rookie seventh-
round pick, had become the starting
running back. The Seahawks will
now go forward with Eddie Lacy and
Thomas Rawls as
their primary ball
carriers.
Carroll seemed
most concerned
about Avril and
the neck injury
he suffered in the
fi rst half. Avril
was inadvertently

chin while trying
to make a tackle from behind and his
head snapped backward. Avril briefl y
lost feeling in his hands. Carroll called
the injury “serious stingers” and would
not put a timeframe on when Avril may
be able to return.
Odhiambo was released from the
hospital Monday after being diagnosed
with a bruised sternum. Odhiambo had
breathing problems after the game and
was tended to by medics in the locker
room before being taken to a hospital
for overnight observation.

Raiders’ QB Carr out 2-6 weeks
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) Oakland Raiders
quarterback Derek Carr will miss between two
and six weeks after breaking a bone in his back
during a loss to the Denver Broncos.
Coach Jack Del Rio said Monday that a
CT scan showed that Carr has
a transverse process fracture in
his back after being injured in
the third quarter of a 16-10 loss
Sunday. Del Rio said these injuries
typically sideline players for two
to six weeks.
Former Cowboys quarterback
Carr
Tony Romo and the Panthers’ Cam
Newton each had similar injuries in
2014 and missed only one game each.
In Carr’s place will be E.J. Manuel, a
fi rst-round pick in Buffalo in 2013, who showed
some encouraging signs when he relieved Carr
after the injury. Manuel completed 11 of 17
passes for 106 yards.
“The board requested of
me and authorized me
to initiate the process to
terminate for cause, as
defi ned in Coach Pitino’s
employment contract

accomplishments is really
unrelated. It’s important
that we be fair and follow
the agreement and do this
right for any employee.”

Kansas City beats Washington
on last-second fi eld goal
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs
kicker Harrison Butker drilled a 43-yard fi eld
goal with 8 seconds left in his fi rst career
game, atoning for an earlier miss and helping
Kansas City to a 29-20 victory
over the Washington Redskins
on Monday night.
The Chiefs (4-0) put an
exclamation point on the win
when linebacker Justin Houston picked up
a fumble as the Redskins (3-2) were trying
to keep the game alive and returned it for a
game-ending touchdown.
Alex Smith threw for 293 yards with
touchdowns on the ground and through the air,
and it was his 37-yard strike to Albert Wilson
that set up Butker’s go-ahead kick.
Travis Kelce hauled in seven catches for 111
yards and a touchdown, while Chiefs rookie
Kareem Hunt ran 21 times for 101 yards.
