THURSDAY
7:37 a.m. - A caller told
police there was a car crash
on Highway 339 and Locust
Road, Milton-Freewater, and a
driver and the passenger fled in
another vehicle. Oregon State
Police searched the crash and
found a syringe containing a
liquid in the trunk. The College
Place Police Department an
hour later entered the crashed
vehicle as stolen.
5:18 p.m. - A Dodge Neon
and a tractor collided head-on
at Christley Lane and Canal
Road, Hermiston. The wreck
blocked traffic, but everyone
involved seemed uninjured.
7:52 p.m. - A resident on
Second Street, Umatilla, told
police some people were
trying to take her red Dodge
two-door pickup. They were
not thieves, but employees
of Blue Ribbon Recovery, a
Washington repossession
company.
9:48 p.m. - Law enforce-
ment responded to reports
of two people screaming at
each other on the steps at
Hermiston City Hall, 180 N.E.
Second St.
11:16 p.m. - Another blue
laser illuminated an aircraft
near the Eastern Oregon
Regional Airport, Pendleton.
ARRESTS, CITATIONS
•Boardman police
arrested Anthony Alvarez,
27, no address provided, for
unlawful possession (carrying
a concealed firearm) and
possession of a short-barreled
shotgun.
•The Morrow County
Sheriff’s Office arrested
Michael William Brantley,
18, no address provided,
for six counts of first-degree
theft. Morrow County Circuit
Court records show the
district attorney’s office Friday
afternoon arraigned Brantley
on the charges and accused
him of stealing the following
guns Thursday from a relative:
a Ruger 10/22 rifle; Ruger
12-gauge shotgun; Ruger
M77 7-mm rifle; Weatherby
Vanguard 7-mm rifle;
Remington Model 700 22-250
rifle; and Winchester Model 70
.308-caliber rifle.

Gun owner stops
knife-wielding
skateboarder
LEBANON (AP) —
Police in Lebanon, Oregon,
say a man pulled a gun on
a skateboarder who was
threatening a driver with a
knife.
Authorities told KPTV
the incident happened
Thursday night, when the
30-year-old skateboarder
—Michael Van Gelder —
got into a confrontation
with a driver.
A witness with a
concealed carry permit
saw what was happening
and drew his weapon. He
ordered the skateboarder to
drop the knife.
Police say the
skateboarder tried to run,
but was stopped by the
driver and the gun owner.
They say the skateboarder
struck the driver, who
sustained a minor injury.
Court records list Van
Gelder as a resident of
Stevenson, Washington. He
was booked into the Linn
County Jail on charges
of assault, menacing,
disorderly conduct and
unlawful use of a weapon.
He had not retained a
lawyer or been appointed
one as of early Friday
afternoon.

Wisconsin girl reaches plea deal in Slender Man case

WAUKESHA, Wis. —
The second of two Wisconsin
girls charged with repeatedly
stabbing a classmate to
impress horror character
Slender Man will plead guilty
in a deal that will send her to a
state mental hospital and bring
an end a case that shocked
people in part because the
attackers were only 12.
The deal, announced in
court Friday, means both girls
will avoid prison time for the
attack on Payton Leutner, who
was also 12. Morgan Geyser,
now 15, will be treated indefi-
nitely at a mental hospital. Her
co-defendant, Anissa Weier,
faces at least three years in a
mental hospital.
“It’s been a tragic experi-
ence for everyone,” Geyser’s
attorney, Donna Kuchler, said
after a brief court hearing
Friday. “Our hearts go out

to the victim and her family.
And we’re very grateful that
the district attorney’s office
gave this case the considering
it deserves.”
Weier and Geyser lured
Payton Leutner, who was
also 12, into the woods
at a park in Waukesha, a
Milwaukee suburb. Geyser
stabbed Leutner 19 times
while Weier urged her on,
according to investigators.
Leutner survived after she
crawled out of the woods to a
path where a passing bicyclist
found her.
Both Weier and Geyser
told detectives they felt they
had to kill Leutner to become
Slender Man’s “proxies,” or
servants, and protect their
families from him.
Geyser had been scheduled
to go on trial Oct. 16. The plea
deal comes after a jury this
month determined that Weier
was mentally ill at the time of
the attack on Leutner.
Geyser was at Friday’s
hearing but didn’t speak.
Afterward, the judge allowed
her to spend three hours with
her family before returning
her to a mental hospital where
she has been receiving treat-
ment.
The Leutner family issued
a statement saying they had
no comment about Friday’s
hearing but will issue a
statement at a plea hearing
Thursday when Geyser’s deal
will be formalized.
Geyser and Weier were
charged with attempted
first-degree
intentional
homicide, which carries a
possible sentence of up to 65
years in prison. Weier pleaded
guilty to a reduced charge
last month, and a jury then
determined the sentence.
Unlike Weier, Geyser will
plead guilty to the original
charge from prosecutors.
But Geyser won’t face a
sentencing phase where attor-
neys would argue that she was
mentally ill when the crime
occurred and shouldn’t face
prison time.
“It’s just fair. It saves
everybody a trial. It saves the
victim, her family,” Kuchler
said.
