Page 2C YOUR EO NEWS East Oregonian Saturday, September 23, 2017 THANK YOU Merkley harvests recognition from farmers Recognized as being a champion for family farmers and ranchers, U. S. Sen. Jeff Merkley received a Golden Triangle Award from the National Farmers Union. The award, which is the family farm organization’s highest legislative honor, was presented Sept. 12 during the Fall Legislative Fly-In in Washington, D.C. First presented in 1988, the Golden Triangle symbolizes the organization’s core principles of education, cooperation and legislation. It’s presented to senators and representatives who demonstrate leadership and support at the federal policymaking level for family farmers, ranchers and their rural communities. Merkley said it’s been a tough year for farmers and ranchers, both in Oregon and across the nation. Drought and wildfires, the senator said, threatened land and livestock. In addition, Merkley said the president’s budget proposed huge cuts to critical agricultural programs. “Working with true champions for rural America in both parties, we successfully fought for the resources that have helped our farmers and ranchers thwart these threats and build a foundation for a prom- ising future,” he said. “I thank the National Farmers Union for all it does to support our family farmers and ranchers, and I thank my colleagues in congress who have fought alongside me.” Founded in 1902 by 10 local farmers, the group works to protect and enhance the economic well-being and quality of life for family farmers, ranchers and rural communities. Riverside students learn about career opportunities Students from Riverside Jr/Sr High School recently learned about different career opportunities and the availability of local training programs. A Sept. 14 field trip took students to the Work- force Training Center in Boardman. As part of Blue Mountain Commu- nity College, the center opened in April. It includes classrooms and has a well- equipped lab for training in industrial systems technology as well as data center technicians. While on the tour, Gov. Kate Brown stopped in. Riverside principal David Norton said students had an opportunity to talk to the governor about projects they were currently working on. In addition to visiting the workforce center in Boardman, Brown also toured Lamb Weston and the Early Learning Center. While traveling to the region, Brown met with officials and business owners who are impacted by the Eagle Creek fire. The governor continued on to Pendleton to take part in Round-Up festivities. “I was truly impressed by the collaboration I witnessed to really fulfill my priority for a seamless system of education and a thriving economy in all corners of the state,” Brown said. I want to thank Beverly Harkenrider and her family for such a nice memorial service for Frank. Frank had been on city council and also had been mayor of the city of Hermiston. Frank had an untold number of friends here in Hermiston and beyond. Most people have overlooked the fact that Frank was born on Christmas Day 1926. Betty and I always sent Christmas cards to our friends out of town. However, we always sent two cards to the Harken- riders, one for Christmas and one was a birthday card to Frank because he was born on Christmas Day. When Frank was on the city council and I was city manager there were many, many improvements made to the city, and some are the following: a new airport was constructed; a new library was constructed and heavily used; the Safety Center was built that houses the police and fire personnel and also the municipal judge and court facilities; an untold number of street improvements were constructed; a wastewater treatment plant meeting all requirements at that time was built; a new city hall was acquired at that time; and a public works facility building was also built. These are just a few of the more important improvements made to the city. I will certainly miss Frank Harkenrider. Two Weston-McEwen teachers named civic scholars Rep. Greg Barreto of House District 58 selected Athena-Weston School District teachers Troy Olson and Shawn White as 2017-18 Civic Scholars. Both are educators at Weston-McEwen High School. Olson teaches social studies and White is a U.S. history teacher. Each state legislator named two teachers from their district for the program, which is part of a statewide initiative to enhance profes- sional development in civics education. Civic scholars receive free registration for the Civics Conference for Teachers, held in December at the Oregon State Capitol. The conference features presen- tations from each branch of government, and lessons from master teachers about how to implement civics lessons into curriculum. “We are very pleased that two of our teachers have been recognized in this way,” said district superintendent Laure Quaresma. “Both Mr. Olson and Mr. White are very deserving educators dedicated to teaching students about being informed about our country.” The program is sponsored by the Classroom Law Project, a nonprofit organi- zation dedicated to engaging students in government. First St., Hermiston FALL I would like to try and convey my appreciation to the many people who were involved in caring for my husband, Frank Harkenrider, during his last illness. From the time that he fell carrying in a large bottle of drinking water till the moment his kidneys failed and he took his last breath we were met with kindness, professionalism and care. The 911 responders, the staff at Good Shepherd Medical Center, the emergency room doctor, Dr. Jeremy Anderson and the nurses and caregivers at Regency Hermiston Nursing & Rehabilitation Center were exceptional. I know they were “just doing their job” but they did their jobs with outstanding compassion. The response to Frank’s death has been overwhelming. Ken Huber and his staff from Burns Mortuary and Dr. Jim Pierce from the First United Methodist Church have made this very difficult time in our lives bearable. The celebration of life at the high school was a perfect tribute to Frank. Thank you Hermiston High School band for playing the “Bulldog Fight Song.” Frank would have loved it. The flowers, donations, cards, news articles, food, and other expressions of friendship and caring are so appreciated. It is impossible for me to list everyone who has touched our lives and shared our sorrow. Please accept our thanks and know that we treasure your love and friendship. 125 S.
