Harvey’s floodwaters
give way to festering
piles of garbage

Northbound traffic on the turnpike near Sunrise
Blvd. is backed up in the rain as motorist prepare for
Hurricane Irma on Thursday in Sunrise, Fla.
Traffic nightmare as
500K people told to
leave South Florida
MIAMI (AP) — The
race to flee Hurricane Irma
became a marathon night-
mare as more than a half-mil-
lion people were ordered
to leave South Florida on
Thursday.
With the storm barreling
toward the tip of Florida for
perhaps a catastrophic blow
this weekend, normally quick
trips turned into daylong
journeys on crowded high-
ways amid a constant search
for gasoline and lodging.
Airline seats out of Florida
were in short supply as well.
Mari and Neal Michaud
loaded their two children
and dog into their small
sport-utility vehicle and
left their home near Cocoa
Beach about 10 a.m., bound
for an impromptu vacation
in Washington, D.C. Using a
phone app and calls to search
for fuel along the way, they
finally arrived at a conve-
nience store that had gasoline
nearly five hours later.
The 60-mile trip up Inter-
state 95 should have taken an
hour, Mari Michaud said.
“There was no gas and it’s
gridlock. People are stranded
on the sides of the highway,”
she said. “It’s 92 degrees out
and little kids are out on the
grass on the side of the road.
No one can help them.”
The National Hurricane
Center issued a hurricane
watch for the Keys and parts
of South Florida, including
some of the Miami metropol-
itan area of 6 million people.
It was the first of perhaps
many watches and warnings
along the Southeastern coast
over the next several days as
forecasters warn the storm
could hit anywhere from
Florida to North Carolina.
As people along the
Atlantic coast anxiously
watched the behemoth,
Irma battered the northern
Caribbean, killing at least 11
people and leaving thousands
homeless after destroying
buildings and uprooting
trees.
At least 31,000 people
fled the Florida Keys, which
could begin seeing wind
and rain from Irma as early
as Friday night, Gov. Rick
Scott said. He noted the size
of the powerful Category 5
storm, and told residents not
to become complacent.
“It is wider than our entire
state and could cause major
and life-threatening impacts
from coast to coast. Regard-
less of which coast you live
on, be prepared to evacuate,”
Scott said.
Scott ordered all schools
and state offices to close
Friday through Monday.
NASA secured Kennedy
Space Center and SpaceX
launched an unmanned
rocket for an experimental
flight. Kennedy closed its
doors to all nonessential staff
and crew.
HOUSTON (AP) — Roiling
waters in the streets have given way to
festering piles of garbage on the curbs.
Harvey’s record-setting rains created
heaps of ruined possessions that now
line entire neighborhoods, some nearly
up to the rooftops of the homes that
were swamped. All that sodden drywall,
flooring, furniture, clothing and toys
adds up to an estimated 8 million cubic
yards in Houston alone, enough to fill
the Texans’ football stadium two times
over.
Texas and city officials have
pledged to make a priority of the
monumental task of cleaning it all up,
though they stopped short of giving
specific timelines, mindful that such
cleanups have dragged on longer than
anticipated after other major storms.
“We want to get it removed as
quickly as possible,” Texas Gov. Greg
Abbott told reporters Thursday.
For now, the piles big and small
have become evidence, of sorts, of
the losses from more than 200,000
damaged homes up and down the
Texas coast.
Not only are the heaps eyesores,
but they are starting to give off a musty
funk. And the longer they sit, officials
warn, they could become havens for
mold, not to mention snakes, rats,
skunks and other critters. The junk
could also turn into projectiles if, heaven
forbid, another hurricane strikes.
Appeals court:
Grandparents not
part of travel ban
SEATTLE (AP) — A federal
appeals court on Thursday rejected
the Trump administration’s limited
view of who is allowed into the United
States under the president’s travel
ban, saying grandparents, cousins and
similarly close relations of people in
the U.S. should not be prevented from
coming to the country.
The unanimous ruling from three
judges on the San Francisco-based
9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also
cleared the way for refugees accepted
by a resettlement agency to travel
here. The decision upheld a ruling by a
federal judge in Hawaii who found the
administration’s view too strict.
“Stated simply, the government
does not offer a persuasive explanation
for why a mother-in-law is clearly
a bona fide relationship, in the
Supreme Court’s prior reasoning, but
a grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle,

dents quickly gut their interiors in a race to salvage their homes Thurs-

niece, nephew, or cousin is not,” the
9th Circuit said.
The appeals panel wrote that under
typical court rules, its ruling would not
take effect for at least 52 days. But in
this instance, the judges said, many
refugees would be “gravely imperiled”
by such a delay, so the decision will
take effect in five days.
“Refugees’ lives remain in
vulnerable limbo during the pendency
of the Supreme Court’s stay,” they
wrote. “Refugees have only a narrow
window of time to complete their travel,
as certain security and medical checks
expire and must then be reinitiated.”
The Justice Department said it

stolen through no fault of their own,
potentially wreaking havoc on their
lives. Equifax said its core credit-
reporting databases don’t appear to
have been breached.
“On a scale of one to 10, this is
a 10 in terms of potential identity
theft,” said Gartner security analyst
Avivah Litan. “Credit bureaus keep so
much data about us that affects almost
everything we do.”
Lenders rely on the information
collected by the credit bureaus to
help them decide whether to approve
financing for homes, cars and
credit cards. Credit checks are even
sometimes done by employers when
deciding whom to hire for a job.

Prosecutors want
Shkreli’s bail revoked
over Clinton posting
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Credit
monitoring company Equifax has been
hit by a high-tech heist that exposed
the Social Security numbers and
other sensitive information about 143
million Americans. Now the unwitting
victims have to worry about the threat
of having their identities stolen.
The Atlanta-based company, one of
three major U.S. credit bureaus, said
Thursday that “criminals” exploited a
U.S. website application to access files
between mid-May and July of this year.
The theft obtained consumers’
names, Social Security numbers,
birth dates, addresses and, in some
cases, driver’s license numbers.
The purloined data can be enough
for crooks to hijack the identities
of people whose credentials were
NEW YORK (AP) — Federal
prosecutors on Thursday filed a court
motion asking a judge to revoke
Martin Shkreli’s bail and throw him
in jail because of recent threats the
so-called “Pharma Bro” allegedly
made against Hillary Clinton.
“Since his conviction on August
4, 2017, Shkreli has engaged in an
escalating pattern of threats and
harassment that warrant his detention
pending sentencing,” prosecutors
wrote in their motion.
“Most recently, Shkreli threatened
former Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton by publicly offering $5,000 to
anyone who would ‘grab’ some of her
hair on the defendant’s behalf during
her upcoming book tour,” prosecutors
wrote.
