he kept all his family close to
his heart — always remem-
bered everyone’s birthdays.
He was loved by so many. In
his early days, he was a logger
and choke setter working in
the southern Oregon woods
and Happy Camp, California,
area. He worked for a time
in Chiloquin with the Forest
Service and Archie Area
digging for artifacts. He lived
with his mom in Portland for
fi ve years until she passed,
then lived with his sister Lee
before moving to Pendleton
where he resided for 18
years.

Shirley Flink

Shirley Flink was born
May 11, 1928, in Longview,
Washington, to Mr. and Mrs.
Gary M. Cobb. They moved
to Portland, Oregon, when
she was 13 months old and
she grew up there.
Shirley attended Wood-
stock Grade School and
graduated from Franklin
High School in June 1945.
She worked a year at Western
Union.
On May 25, 1946, Shirley
married Joseph John Flink at
Our Lady of Sorrows Church
in Portland. They lived in the
Columbia River Gorge for
eight years where their three
children were born.
In 1954, Joe was trans-
ferred to McNary Dam in
Umatilla, Oregon. Their chil-
dren grew up in Hermiston,
Oregon. Shirley and Joe were
divorced in 1978.
Shirley was hired by
Battelle, Pacifi c Northwest
Laboratory until her retire-
ment. On July 1, 2006,
Shirley moved to The Royal
Columbian Assisted Living
in Kennewick, Washington,
then moved to Ruan’s Garden
in Kennewick.
Shirley was preceded in
death by her daughter, Jaclyn
Jean Sievers, her parents, a
brother and a sister.
She is survived by her
son Ron Flink and his wife
Jane, and daughter Carla
Windham and her husband,
Chad. She is also survived by
her son-in-law Bart Sievers
and his wife, Susan. She
has fi ve grandchildren, fi ve
great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be
held Monday, September 11,
2017, at 10:00 a.m., at Desert
Lawn Memorial Park, 1401

Alice M. Tatone, 95,

resident, died Tuesday,
August 29, 2017, in The
Dalles. A graveside
service with mili-
tary honors will be
held on Saturday,
September 9, 2017,
at 1 p.m. at the
Riverview Ceme-
tery in Boardman,
with a reception
to follow at the
Boardman Senior
Center.
She was born
in Boardman on
August 2, 1922,
the daughter of
Charles and Mary
Louise Dillabough Tatone
Wicklander. Mary
Louise
passed
away when Alice was 3½
years old. In 1931 the family
moved to La Grande where
Alice attended school. After
high school she went to
Oregon State College and
then to Kinman Business
University.
Alice left college and
joined the United States
Navy right after Pearl Harbor.
She was the fi rst WAVE in
Oregon sworn in on the radio
station KOIN.
In 1944 she married
Joseph “Joe” Tatone and they
moved to Arlington where
Joe was raised. Joe worked
with his family on the farm
and Alice had a Merle
Norman studio. The couple
later moved to Portland
where Alice attended Reed
College and Joe took classes
at Portland State University
and worked on the river
dredges.
In 1952 they moved to
Boardman, Oregon, with their
2-year-old daughter Linda
Jo and their 2-month-old
son Joseph Jr. “Jody.” They
converted the Cottage Inn
into a home and opened a
restaurant and lounge called
the Hitchin’ Post. They ran
the Hitchin’ Post and Joe
did some farming and cattle
ranching. In 1968 with the
displacement of the town of
Boardman from the John Day
Dam they built Dodge City
Inn (restaurant-lounge-and
motel). Joe passed
away in 1999. The
family continued
to own and operate
Dodge City Inn
business until 2012.
Alice was a
member of the
Tillicum Club and
was president of
the OFWC Junior
Women’s
Club
of Oregon. She
also served as the
president of the
4th District of the
Oregon Federation
of Women’s Club.
During the ’60s
Alice was the
leader of several 4-H clubs.
In 1967 she became a coun-
selor for Western Business
University. Her position took
her around the state speaking
to high school students about
business education. In 1965
she received an insurance
license and sold insurance
and later she also received a
real estate license and sold
real estate.
In 1991 at the age of 69 she
wanted to fulfi ll a promise
she made to her father when
she left college to join the
Navy and she went back to
college and graduated from
Eastern Oregon University
with a Bachelor of Science
degree.
Alice was preceded in
death by her husband of 55
years, Joe Tatone. Survivors
include her daughter Linda Jo
Smith and her husband Roger
of Condon and her son Jody
Tatone and his wife Cindy of
Roseburg, six grandchildren
and 14 great-grandchildren
that where the joy of her life.

Stella E. Kirkham
Pendleton
June 4, 1917 - August 23, 2017
Mrs. Kirkham, 100, a life-
long resident of Pendleton,
died Wednesday, August 23,
at Juniper House assisted
living facility in Pendleton.
Stella was born June 4,
1917, to August and Clara
(Hoeft) Buttke. She was
raised on a working wheat
farm and attended a small
country school southwest of
Pendleton.
Stella married Howard
Kirkham on July 21, 1942.
She then traveled to Cali-
fornia where she helped build
Liberty Ships during her
husband’s military training.
Later, while he was stationed
in the Aleutian Islands, she
moved to Seattle to work as
a riveter on B-17 bombers
for Boeing. The couple
returned to their Pendleton
home in July 1945, where she
remained until 2017.
Stella was happy to be
able to start her family. She
raised both a daughter and a
son. She loved being a wife,
mother and homemaker. In
her mid-40s she completed
the Blue Mountain Commu-
nity College licensed practical
nursing program and worked
at St. Anthony Hospital,
where she was particularly
skilled in working with
pediatric patients. She retired
from nursing in 1982.
Howard died in 1969,
but Stella remained in their
marital home and continued
to focus on the things that
were important to her. She
was an avid reader who loved
the library. She was skilled
in needlework, including
knitting, crocheting and
tatting. She was also a gifted
gardener, growing abundant
fruits, vegetables and fl owers.
The front fence of her home
was lined with colorful roses
that she tended for over half
of a century.
Stella enjoyed spending
time with her family. She
particularly enjoyed family
visits with her nieces,
nephews and their children
over Memorial Day week-
ends.
Survivors include her chil-
dren Janet Jensen and James
Kirkham;
grandchildren
Sarah Jensen, Rachel Jensen
and Samantha Brown; and
fi ve great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by her
husband, all of her brothers
and sisters and son-in-law
Patrick Jensen.
There will be no funeral
service, at her request.

James C. Halladay passed
away August 31, 2017. He
was born in La Grande in
1945 to John Halladay Sr.
and Louise Clark, brother
of Eugene Osborn and John
Halladay Jr.
He graduated from Herm-
iston High School in 1963
and worked for Union Pacifi c
Railroad until he retired in
1998.
J.C. loved the mountains,
the outdoors, riding four-
wheelers and being with his
friends.
He is the loving father
of three children: Betty
Winkler, Rodney Halladay
and Darin Halladay. He has
seven grandchildren and fi ve
great-grandchildren.
We all love you, and you
will be greatly missed.

9:15 a.m. - A female was yelling and throwing chairs in New
York Richie’s on Southeast Emigrant Avenue, Pendleton. She
was arrested by Pendleton Police.
12:12 p.m. - Shots fi red reported at Hoosier Road in
Stanfi eld.
3:02 p.m. - A woman reported that her grandchildren were
walking home at East Pine Avenue and Southeast Seventh
Street, when a woman in a white Camaro with a black stripe
approached the children and made comments that one child
needed to stop picking on his brother. The children were scared
because they didn’t know who this person was or why she knew
they were brothers.
9:28 p.m. - A missing man was reported at Baggett Lane,
Hermiston.
10:11 p.m. - Shots fi red reported at Chenoweth Avenue and
John Day Street in Umatilla.
11:05 p.m. - A vehicle went into the ditch on Highway 11 in
Adams.
SATURDAY
11:52 a.m. - A second locomotive was reported on fi re at
South Thielsen and West Buckley streets, Echo.
2:59 p.m. - Three boys were taking items off of vehicles at
Pendleton Riverside Apartments, Northwest Carden Avenue,
Pendleton.
2:19 p.m. - An assault was reported at Vetter Lane and West
Spearman Road, Hermiston.
5:51 p.m. - A male reported a female hitting him at Harvest
Foods on 6th Street in Umatilla.
SUNDAY
2:15 a.m. - Shots fi red were reported at McNary Beach,
Beach Access Road, Umatilla.
2:38 p.m. - Two men were shoving each other and appeared
to be getting ready to fi ght at Southwest 20th Street. Pendleton
police made an arrest.

4:03 p.m. - A prowler was reported in the barn at Agnew
Road, Hermiston.
