Jarrod Flatau, 41, is the town’s third officer, giving the department a full staff for the first time since 2015. Pilot Rock Police Chief Bill Caldera hired Flatau in the spring, and he left for the academy in May to earn his police certification. City Recorder Teri Porter in a written statement said Flatau is married to Pilot Rock native Jana Beers- Flatau. The couple has lived in the town for the past four years, where Jarrod Flatau has coached Little League. Porter described Flatau as “a perfect fit for Pilot Rock,” and stated “he has done well at the academy, making us all proud.” After graduation, Flatau will have several months of field training in Pendleton before he can work solo. Porter added getting the department fully staffed has been a long time coming. Other local police agencies also have new officers gradu- ating Sept. 8. Travis Stark is a deputy with the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office and Tommy Thompson is with the Umatilla Tribal Police Department. Woman suspected of faking cancer may lose medical license TUALATIN (AP) — The Oregon State Board of Nursing may suspend the license of a Tualatin woman suspected of profiting financially by faking a cancer diagnosis. Jenifer Gaskin announced in 2014 that she had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. A friend established a GoFundMe page that brought in more than $10,000. The friend later became suspicious and police could not find proof that Gaskin had been at the three hospitals where she claimed to have received treatment. KOIN-TV broke the story about Gaskin. The station reported Friday that the nursing board started its own investigation, and has accused Gaskin of engaging in conduct unbecoming of a nursing assistant. The board says Gaskin hasn’t responded to requests for an explanation. Gaskin’s license could be suspended indefinitely if she doesn’t respond by the end of next week. Gaskin has not been charged with a crime. She does not have a listed phone number and could not be located for comment.
