Page 6A RECORDS East Oregonian OBITUARIES COMING EVENTS Tommy Sherman ‘Tom’ Hinton Donald Austin Humphries Milton-Freewater October 3, 1936 - August 28, 2017 Portland September 8, 1930 - August 29, 2017 Tommy (Tom) Sherman Hinton died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, August 28, 2017. Tom was born October 3, 1936, at home in Enterprise, Oregon, to Harry and Sara Augusta (Sherman) Hinton. Spending his early childhood at the family ranch in the Chesnimnus area of Wallowa County, Tom started first grade at Elk Mountain School where his mother was his teacher. His early school years included riding Hinton horseback to a one-room school- house with a large woodstove and an outhouse. By junior high, he was attending class in a multi-grade schoolhouse with electricity and running water. He graduated from Wallowa High School in 1954. Tom was involved in 4-H, FFA and school athletics, being a member of the football team winning the Class B State Champion title against Drain, Oregon, in 1953 and showing livestock at the Pacific International Livestock Show while in high school. The pea harvest brought Tom to Umatilla County. After graduation, Tom went to work for the L.L. Rogers Ranch in Adams. While working for Umatilla Canning Company, Tom joined the National Guard in January 1959. His military commitment was extended due to the Cuba/Russian conflict. Honorable discharge was awarded in 1966. Tom married Dorothy Faye Hockett on March 27, 1960, at Hot Lake, Oregon. The couple had two daugh- ters, Celinda Anne and Char- lotte Leah. Tom and Dorothy built the family home on property located seven miles outside of Milton-Freewater. Polled Hereford cattle graced the pastures and became a hobby Tom enjoyed for most of his adult life. Faith was an important part of Tom’s life. He was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church, holding the office of Sunday School superintendent and deacon for many years. He recently received an emeritus title for his years of service. Tom was very involved in the 4-H and FFA program. He was a livestock superinten- dent at the Milton-Freewater Junior Show, Union Stock Show, Umatilla County Fair and Walla Walla Fair and Frontier Days. A self-taught guitar player, his love of music found him spending Saturday evenings playing for dances with Ron Tomlinson and Olive Anderson at the Stateline Grange — a weekly tradi- tion he enjoyed for almost 50 years. He also played for many weddings, funerals and church events, teaming up with Vickie Piper and Tony Turner. A welder, Tom worked for Western Farmers Associ- ation and retired from Walla Walla Farmer’s Co-op. Extensive travel across Oregon and Washington put the Western Farmer employee in contact with many farmers and large-scale agriculture producers with whom Tom built and retained life-long relationships. After retiring, Tom enjoyed judging livestock at youth fairs, volunteering at local livestock shows and attending his grandchildren’s many sporting and school events. Tom received a multitude of honors in his lifetime. His most recent awards included being named the grand marshal of the Umatilla County Fair in 2002, Honorary FFA State Farmer degree holder, Honor Roll recipient of the Milton-Freewater Junior Show and Golden Pioneer by the Milton-Freewater Chamber of Commerce in 2015. Tom is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy, at the family home. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Aldon Johnson of Wallowa, Oregon; his daughters and sons-in-law, Celinda and Steve Timmons and Char- lotte and Steve Birdwell, all of Milton-Freewater; grand- children Shelby West of Eagle, Idaho, Courtney (Michael) Waliser of Milton-Freewater, Lindsey (Will) Hicks of Newberg, Oregon, and Lawrence Timmons of Salem, Oregon; one great-grandchild, Henry Waliser; and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His parents and one sister, Avona (Hinton) LeaMaster, preceded Tom in death. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5 at First Christian Church, 518 South Main in Milton-Freewater. A dinner will follow at the Milton-Freewater Junior Show Grounds. Memorial contribu- tions may be made to the Milton-Freewater Area Foundation for the Tom S. Hinton Educational Scholarship helping 4-H and FFA youth obtain a college degree. DEATH NOTICES Alice M.
