Pendleton Buckaroos boys
soccer team kicked off the 2017
season in 100 degree weather
on the road on Tuesday and
came
home
with a 4-1 loss

the Lewiston

“(We) played tough but ran
out of gas,” Talbot said.
Sophomore Andrew Wolotira
manned the goal for Pendleton
and turned in 15 saves in the
game.
Pendleton will open its
home slate on Thursday when
it hosts Milwaukie at 6:30 p.m.

Switching schools is never an
easy thing to do.
Willie Camp went through
that process this summer, leaving
behind his friends and the comfort
of home in La Grande as his parents
moved the family northwest on
Interstate 84 up to Pendleton this
summer. But the high school junior
and football player got quickly
acclimated to his new town, new
school and made plenty of new
friends this summer which helped
make his fi rst offi cial day as a
Buckaroo on Tuesday an easy one.
“I love it here,” Camp said at
football practice on Tuesday. “It’s
an amazing experience for me here.
Coach (Erik) Davis has really built
an amazing program here and does
a great job.”
Camp expects to make a big
impact on the Buckaroos this
season, especially on the defensive
side of the fi eld. Right now the
6-foot-4 athlete is slotted in as a
starting outside linebacker on the
defense, and also has the ability to
play well in coverage. Observing
Camp at practice on Tuesday
afternoon, his potential on that
side of the ball is obvious as he has
the height to match up with taller
receivers and tight ends, but still
has plenty of speed to fl y around in
run support.
“He’s a good-looking athlete
and he’s fi t right in with these kids,”
Pendleton coach Erik Davis said
Tuesday. “I hope he feels a part of
the family here because he’s a great
kid and a great football player.”
Camp said that the move up
to linebacker took a little time to
adjust to, after playing safety for
two seasons in La Grande. But after
a few weeks of practice he said he

games, so we’ve just got to win as
many games as we can.”
Bundy (13-8) allowed just a bunt
single to Kyle Seager in the fourth
inning and set a career high with 12
strikeouts. The right-hander, who
is pitching his fi rst full season as a
starter, has a 2.00 ERA in August and
has struck out 10 or more in three of
his last four outings.
Jonathan Schoop and Welington
Castillo also went deep for the
Orioles, who moved two games over
.500 for the fi rst time since June 10.
It was more support than Bundy
needed.

From Week 0 & beyond, scheduling quirks abound in Pac-12

It’s Week One for the
college football season. So
that means Utah must be
playing a Thursday night
game.
The Utes have opened
the season on a Thursday
night since 2009 — before
the school joined the Pac-12
conference. This season
they’ll host North Dakota.
Those Thursday starts
help showcase the Utes on
television, in this season’s
case on the Pac-12 Network.
It also gives Utah fans the
chance to make other plans
for the long Labor Day
weekend.
Utah has requested a
Thursday game each season
with the understanding it
may not always be granted.
The Utes also have two
Friday night games this
season. The Pac-12 is among
the conferences that schedule
games on Fridays, with nine
games involving league
teams set for this season —
not including the conference
championship.
“We’ve got schedules
that accommodate the short
weeks, the long weeks, every
possible conceivable time we
can play, we’ve done that,”
coach Kyle Whittingham
said, discussing how sched-
uling quirks impact the team.
There are a number of
other calendar twists in the
Pac-12 this season:
BYE BYE BYE: The
fourth-ranked Trojans have
no off week this season.
None . So there’s no chance
for a team that many say has
a good shot of making the
playoffs to rest and recharge.

Mark Helfrich hired by Fox Sports
(AP) — Fox Sports has added former LSU
coach Les Miles, former Oregon coach mark
Helfrich and former Florida State quarterback
Danny Kanell to its lineup of game analysts for
college football.
Miles, whom LSU fi red last year after 11-plus
seasons, will be teamed with play-
by-play announcer Tim Brando and
analyst Spencer Tillman for select
games this season, starting Sept.
16 when Northern Illinois visits
Nebraska. The game will air on
FS1.
Helfrich, who was fi red by
Helfrich
Oregon after last season, will call
games weekly. He joins the announcing team
of Justin Kutcher and analyst Petros Papadakis.
Helfrich’s fi rst game will be Maryland at Texas
on Saturday, which is airing on FS1.
Kanell, who was laid off by ESPN after eight
years there, will join play-by-play announcer
Eric Collins and analyst AJ Hawk.

The NBA All-Star guard talked to ESPN
on Tuesday about his injured hip that
ended his season in the 2017 playoffs,
which is hanging up the fi nalization of
the Boston-Cleveland trade because of
the Cavs’ reservations about his health.
University of Houston cancels
football season-opener
HOUSTON (AP) — The University of
Houston has postponed its football game at
Texas-San Antonio on Saturday as the city
deals with catastrophic fl ooding
from Hurricane Harvey.
The Cougars have been in
Austin practicing since Friday,
but decided that this week was
not the time to play a game.
“The epic disaster that continues to unfold
in and around the city of Houston has made it
evident that our athletic events are not a priority
at this time,” Houston athletics director Hunter
Yurachek said Tuesday.
Offi cials said they will explore options for
rescheduling the game. Houston has an off date
on Nov. 11.
The Cougars will not compete in any sports
this weekend with events in cross country,
volleyball and soccer also being canceled.
