Overall, the drive collected 39 units from 48 donors, said Patti Perkins, who helps coordi- nate the blood drives. The canteen, she said, was furnished by Good Shepherd Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary. The next blood drive at Good Shepherd is Monday, Aug. 21 from noon to 6 p.m. While walk-ins are welcome, appointments can be made by calling 800-448-3543. Blood products are always in high demand, Perkins said, but the summer months result in increased needs. Debbie McBee, who also serves on the Cason’s Place board, Beth Harrison and Marge Norrington-Jones met with Cason’s Place board members Aug. 3 to present the donation. Some of the books will be given to kids to take with them, while others will be kept in the “talking rooms,” where youths can use them as resources when using services at Cason’s Place after the loss of a sibling or parent. Cason’s Place is a nonprofit organization named in memory of Cason Terjeson, who died in an Eastern Oregon farming accident in 2007. His parents, Matt Terjeson and Jan Peterson-Terjeson, and sister Lydia, gained help through the Dougy Center in Portland. The Terjesons and others have met regularly to make plans to create a similar facility in Umatilla County. The facility, which is located in a former Pendleton orthopedic office on South- east Court Avenue owned by St. Anthony Hospital, is undergoing renovations. The organization is plan- ning a multi-day event called Cason’s Camp for late August, which will act as a trial run for operations at the new building, McBee said in June. Golfers tee off for local Special Olympics program The Desert Lanes team of Chad Owens, Mike Postlewart, Doug Larsen and Nikki Postlewart took top honors in the Hermiston/Pendleton Special Olympics Fundraising Golf Tourna- ment, held Aug. 12 at Echo Hills Golf Course. The foursome scored a 55, edging out the 3 Officers and a Gentleman team of Raymond Hocker, Dick Baker, Carlos Torres and Tye Stewart. In its 12th year, the tournament drew 55 golfers and raised $6,500 for the local Special Olympics program. Special Olympics training and competition must be provided at no cost to the athletes. The policy requires the local program to raise enough money to support athletes in the specialized year-round sporting program, said Kristi Smalley, event chairwoman. “Once more, the community indicated their sincere love of Special Olympics and confirmed their support of the athletes with generous donations of time, talent and open wallets,” she said. Part of the success of this year’s event, Smalley said, was due to the Gold Medal Sponsors, who each contributed $500 to the tournament. They included Umatilla Electric Cooperative, Knights of Columbus Council #3999, Rogers Toyota of Hermiston, A & A Mini Storage (in-kind donation) and new this year, Jim Purswell’s Pumps Co. Inc. In addition to Two Pendleton nonprofits receive PGE grants A pair of Pendleton nonprofit organizations each received $5,000 grants from the PGE Foundation — the corporate foundation of Portland General Electric. The Arts Council of Pendleton will use the money to support its free arts programs for youth in the region surrounding Pendleton, and the Oregon East Symphony has earmarked its grant to support Symphony Strings, an after-school program for fourth and fifth grade students. The two local donations were among the foundation’s 22 grants totaling $211,250, which were distributed in the second quarter of 2017 to arts and cultural education outreach programs. “We believe arts and culture are critical to helping all people realize their full potential,” said Kregg Arntson, executive director of the PGE Foundation. “That’s why we work with our community partners to provide young people access to arts learning opportunities in urban and rural areas across Oregon.” The PGE Foundation works in collaboration with communities across Oregon to improve educational outcomes, inspire critical thinking though arts experiences and strengthen family stability. THANK YOU Customer appreciates extra mile by jeweler I was delighted with a jewelry repair done by Goss Jewelers last spring and so I took my Black Hills Gold band in to see if they could replace a leaf that was lost from the band. They investigated if they could find a source for a replacement theme, but cautioned me that it was probably unlikely, since Black Hills Gold jewelry is sold as a whole. They even tried to find a source that might have “scrap” pieces. This was a dead end, too. I appreciate the time and care they took to try to complete this repair. I would highly recommend them as my jeweler of choice in Hermiston. Sally Peatow Hermiston Pet of the Week Lizzy Are you looking for a beautiful new playmate to welcome in to your home?
