Aug. 18, 1917
It rained last night. It wasn’t much of a rain
as rains go, but it was the very first shower
of any kind or description that has fallen in
Pendleton since June 29, a period of 49 days.
The rain, a thunder shower, occurred between
11 and 12 last night. Clouds had blown up
during the evening and lightning flashes and
thunder rolls had indicated a storm. The rain
fell heavily but was over in a few moments,
hardly more than laying the dust. However,
it proved very refreshing for those who were
out that late. With the rain that fell last night,
there has been but .09 of an inch during the
past 70 days and this is probably the longest
drought on record in these parts.

Aug. 18, 1967
A Pendleton man was the victim of a brutal
attack with a “sharp-edged” weapon early
today. He is Dennis Lyle Holmes, 21. He is
in critical condition in Pendleton Community
Hospital. Holmes was found about 6:30 a.m.

produce some 250 rabbits for markets
every week and say rabbit meat is one of
the most versatile foods in the world today.
Roy Timm, plus Oman and Jayne Wilcox
of Pendleton, and Ross and Mary Scovill
of Milton-Freewater raise rabbits for meat,
which is available weekly at Big Apple Food
Warehouse in Pendleton and Milton-Free-
water; Shop’n Kart in Hermiston; and The
Farmers Market in Milton-Freewater. Timm,
the Wilcoxes and the Scovills all are members
of the Rabbit Co-Op of the Great Northwest,
a 29-member group based in Okanogan,
Wash., that promotes rabbit as an alternative
meat source.
