Weekend festival rocks Milton-Freewater
By TAMMY MALGESINI
East Oregonian
A
familiar
fami-
ly-friendly festival returns
to Milton-Freewater this
weekend.
Tarika
Banks,
Milton-Freewater Chamber
of Commerce executive
director, said people aren’t
completely certain what
Milton-Freewater Rocks! is
all about. In its second year
with the new moniker, the
former Muddy Frogwater
Festival highlights “The
Rocks” district of the town.
It was designated as an
American Viticulture Area
in 2015.
Admission
to
Milton-Freewater Rocks! is
free and features a variety
of entertainment, activities
and fundraising meals
Friday through Sunday at
Yantis Park. Breakfasts are
available Friday (from the
chamber ambassadors) and
Saturday (Milton-Freewater
Elks) mornings at 7 a.m. The
cost is $7 per person. Food,
vendor and activity booths
are open Friday from 3-9
p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m. and Sunday from
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, the
Rocks! Garden will serve
wine, cider and beer Friday
from 3-9 p.m. and Saturday
from noon to 9 p.m.
The
festival
offers
people a chance to kick
back and relax at the park.
In addition, the Harvest of
Art is Friday and Saturday
from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at
Central Middle School.
In its 17th year, the show
features regional artists and
offers cash prizes in four
categories.
Evening festival high-
lights, Banks said, include
Friday’s Heritage Night,
which features a Latino
Heritage performance from
5-6 p.m. For those who
would like to fork out a
few bucks, they can enjoy
the annual Rotary Chicken
Dinner ($12) from 5-8 p.m.
Walla Walla’s FrogHollow
Band plays from 7-10 p.m.

This year’s festival is Friday through Sunday at Yantis Park.
“It’s just kind of a
fun thing for the
kids to watch.”
— Tarika Banks,
Milton-Freewater Chamber
of Commerce executive
director, speaking about
the Firefighter’s Water Fight

Milton-Freewater Rocks! features live entertainment,
food, drinks and activity vendors. Terry Magill’s fresh-
squeezed lemonade stand has been a mainstay at
the Milton-Freewater festival since 1996.
the Confederated Tribes of
the Umatilla Indian Reser-
vation — Dance Troupe
Generations will perform
from 5:30-6:30 p.m. It
features dancing drums and
story-telling. The salmon
dinner and corn roast ($15)
runs from 6-8 p.m. The
evening closes out with
Lark Drive, a Walla Walla
band, performing from 7-10
p.m.
Saturday afternoon also
features a sip and paint
event. Walla Walla artist
Barb Newby will guide
people during Brushes N
Brix. Participants pay $40
and receive all the supplies
and a free drink. After-
wards, they can take home
the piece of artwork they
created.
A community worship
service kicks off Sunday
morning at 9 a.m. Also,
Banks is excited to
have
local
musician
Diego Romero, a recent
McLoughlin High School
graduate,
performing
Sunday between noon and
3 p.m. While attending
Mac-Hi, Romero received
numerous awards and
recognition for his musical
abilities.
Also, people of all ages
won’t want to miss the
Firefighter’s Water Fight.
The friendly competition
features firefighters from
the city and rural fire
departments battling it out
Sunday at 3 p.m.
“It’s just kind of a fun
thing for the kids to watch,”
Banks said. “They get to sit
on the curb and they get wet
from the spray.”
