MONDAY
8:57 a.m. - A mother called Hermiston police and asked where
her son’s vehicle was. She said it was by Eastside Market, 582 E.
Main St., but now is gone, and she did not have a license plate
number or description of the vehicle. Police did not take action.
12:53 p.m. - A male jumped into oncoming traffi c on the 1700
block of Southeast Court Avenue, Pendleton.
Police Lt. Charles Byram said the victim was in the midst of a
mental crisis and suffered minor injuries. Even so, Byram said, an
ambulance rushed the victim to St. Anthony Hospital, Pendleton,
where he received medical and mental health treatment.

2:02 p.m. - An Irrigon resident on Northeast Washington Street
reported the theft of welding equipment from his home.
3:24 p.m. - Two males fi ghting at Winn Road and Highway 11,
Weston, prompted a 9-1-1 call for law enforcement. There was no
report of arrests.
3:26 p.m. - Hermiston police took a report of a solicitor violation
on East Gladys Avenue. Another report came in about four hours
later from Northeast Alora Drive and East Theater Lane.
4:30 p.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Offi ce received a
request to check on a woman who texted family she was in mental
distress and whose husband died a year before.
5:33 p.m. - A caller told Pendleton police someone threw a
female out of a red Dodge Dakota pickup at Southeast 17th Street
and Court Avenue, and she walked east on Court.
7:15 p.m. - Pendleton police responded to the Pendleton Public
Library, 502 S.W. Dorion Ave., for a person in crisis.
8:58 p.m. - A caller on West Laird Avenue, Hermiston, reported
hearing a large boom.
ARRESTS, CITATIONS
Monday
•Umatilla tribal police arrested Patsy Totsmaywee Jones, 32,
of Pendleton, for disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, dangerous
drugs, criminal activity in drugs, criminal use of drugs and two
counts each of child neglect and endangering the welfare of a
minor.
•Umatilla County Community Justice arrested Nina June
Hodges, 22, of 360 S.W. Ninth St., Apt 15, Hermiston, for a felony
probation violation, providing equipment to falsify a drug test and
falsifying drug test results. According to the list of charges in circuit
court, the district attorney’s offi ce accused Hodges of delivering
fake urine and using a urine bottle on Monday to falsify a drug test.
•Umatilla tribal police arrested Sylvia Sue Minthorn, 41, of
Pendleton, for DUII.
Tuesday
•Oregon State Police reported a trooper had to rope a combative
drunk driver’s feet during his arrest.
The trooper at about 12:40 a.m. stopped a silver Honda Civic
for a lighting violation on Highway 395 around fi ve miles south of
Pendleton. Nicolas Joseph Gonzales, 25, was driving while intox-
icated, according to state police, and had a suspended license.
The trooper arrested Gonzales, but he refused to get into the
back of the police car. After a struggle, the trooper tied a hobble —
essentially a rope with a loop — around Gonzales’s ankles, placed
him in the car and took him to the Umatilla County Jail, Pendleton.
There, he took a breath test that showed his blood-alcohol level
was .2 percent, more than twice the .08 percent legal limit. The
trooped booked Gonzales into the jail for driving while suspended,
driving under the infl uence of intoxicants (alcohol), reckless driving
and resisting arrest.
Oregon man accused of
killing two in fi re indicted
PORTLAND (AP) — A
man originally charged with
fi rst-degree arson and aggra-
vated murder now faces
additional charges of murder,
domestic abuse and animal
abuse after being accused
of setting his ex-girlfriend’s
apartment on fi re and killing
her two roommates.
The Oregonian/Oregon-
Live reports 28-year-old
Ryan Thomas Monaco was
indicted on Monday on 17
charges. He is charged for
the deaths of 24-year-old
Taher Ali Alhaji and
42-year-old Jason Miller,
who both died in the fi re.
Monaco
also
was
charged with strangling and
assaulting his ex-girlfriend
on February 12.
The animal abuse charges
are for a dog and three snakes
that died in the fi re.
Police accuse Monaco
of dousing a couch in the
apartment with gasoline and
lighting it on fi re.
Monaco’s ex-girlfriend
told police Monaco wasn’t
supposed to be at her
apartment because she
had a restraining order
against him.

Charles R. “Chuck”
Bechler of Walla Walla,
Washington, former longtime
Umatilla, Oregon, resident,
was born on November 16,
1939, in Sac County, Iowa, the
youngest of four children, to
parents George and Margaret
Smith Bechler. He died on
August 5, 2017, at
his home in Walla
Walla, Washington,
at the age of 77
years.
Chuck graduated
from high school
and received a
teaching scholarship
to go to college
because his mother
was a teacher. After
two years of college Bechler
he decided that
teaching was not for
him. His cousin got him a job
with the Corps of Engineers
in December 1959 where he
worked in construction and
surveying for the fi rst 15 years
of his career. Chuck married
Nancy Warner and they had
four children, Lauri, J.Deane,
Amy and David, before later
divorcing.
In 1972 he became a
powerhouse operator in
Umatilla, Oregon. Chuck
married Hattie Crewdson
in 1976, adding Tom, Trina
and Richard (who passed
away in 1996) to this blended
family. He retired from the
Corps of Engineers in 1994
after working throughout
the Northwest as well as
Wyoming, Arkansas, North
Dakota and Alaska.
Chuck and Hattie then
started a new adventure RVing
on November 26, 1994,
heading to Arizona. They took
a break from RVing in 1999
to move to Mattawa, Wash.,
to raise their grandson Mat
Waddell for three years before
he joined the United States
Navy. They resumed RVing in
2001 and continued until 2012
when they settled in Walla
Walla, Washington, to be near
family. During their 20 years
of travels they experienced
many adventures and visited
many places including castles
in Germany and the
caves in Virginia.
They saw a lot of the
country and enjoyed
many concerts and
spent every winter
going south with
their dog, Boo Boo.
Chuck enjoyed
biking,
traveling,
walking,
fi shing,
hiking, and espe-
cially playing pool
with the “Boys” at
the senior center.
Chuck had a lifetime full of
memories fi lled with love,
loss and family.
He is survived by his
wife, Hattie Bechler, Walla
Walla, Wash.; children Lauri
Bechler and J.Deane Coombs,
Umatilla, Ore., Amy Omstead,
Scappoose, Ore., David
Bechler, Bothell, Wash., Tom
Waddell and Trina Parrish,
both of Walla Walla, Wash.;
13 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren.
Chuck was preceded in
death by his parents, three
siblings, a stepson and a
grandson.
A memorial service will be
held on Saturday, August 12,
2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Burns
Mortuary chapel, Hermiston,
Oregon. Burial will follow
at Sunset Hills Cemetery,
Umatilla, Oregon.

Harold Patrick Quinn
was born on March 3, 1931,
in Burwell, Nebraska, to
Patrick Quinn and Mary
Bennett. He lived with his
sister and graduated from
Hermiston High School.
On July 24, 1954, he
married Peggy Ivester in
Prosser,
Wash-
ington. She later
died on January 18,
1998.
He worked at
Pacifi c Northwest
Bell for 35 years.
He retired from
there.
He was very
active throughout
his life. He loved
skiing, dancing, Quinn
riding 4-wheelers,
fi shing, hunting,
leatherworking,
wood-
working, and trap shooting.
He was also into reloading.
He belonged to The Elks,
Eagles, Ski Club, Pioneer
of the Pines, and Knights of
Pythias.
He was predeceased by
his parents Patrick and Mary
Quinn; siblings Gaylord
(Ruth) Quinn, Ralph (Eva)
Quinn and Mary Jo Bruce
(Owen).
He is survived by his son
Steven Quinn of Pendleton
and his daughter Roslyn
and spouse David Pedro
of Pendleton; three grand-
children: Ryan Pedro of
Umatilla, Samantha French
of Pendleton and Marissa
Loiland
of
Pendleton;
fi ve great-grand-
children;
and
several
nieces
and nephews. He
is also survived
by his friend and
traveling partner of
seven years, Wanda
Wyrick.
There will be a
viewing on Friday,
August 11, 2017,
from 11:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. at

David J. Ward

Former long-time Pend-
leton resident David J. Ward,
84, passed away August
3, 2017, at Providence St.
Vincent Hospital in
Portland.
David was born
August 26, 1932, in
Stella, Nebraska, to
Lionel Gilbert and
Ella Louise Ward.
David served in the
United States Navy
during the Korean
War as a radio oper-
ator.
After his service
in the Navy, David
moved to Pendleton,
Oregon, where he
would marry Alice
Mae Neely in 1953. Ward
While living in
Pendleton, David
would begin a career as a U.S.
postal carrier serving Pend-
leton residents for 27.5 years
until his retirement in 1992.
David and his wife Alice
enjoyed Saturday night dances
as part of the Alons Dance
Club at the VFW Hall in Pend-
leton as well as their involve-
ment with activities at Peace
Lutheran Church. Following
his retirement, David and
wife Alice eventually moved
to the Portland area in 1999
to be closer to family. One of
David’s greatest passions was
writing song lyrics, especially
country and gospel. Faith in
God and devotion to family
were instrumental in his life.
David
was
preceded in death
by his wife Alice
Ward, who passed
away in 2008.
David is survived
by brother William
of Castle Rock,
Colo.; sister Norma
of Kyle, Texas; and
sons Chris Ward of
Kirkland,
Wash.,
and Steve Ward of
Tigard, Ore. David
is also survived by
three grandchildren,
fi ve great-grandchil-
dren and numerous
nephews and nieces.
A
graveside
service will be held August
14, 2017, at 9:30 a.m. at
Willamette National Ceme-
tery in Portland.
