Five locals to play in Shrine Game

The annual Oregon East West Shrine
All-Star football game is gearing up for
its 65th edition this weekend in Baker
City.
Operating as a benefi t for the Shri-
ners Hospital for Children in Portland,
features some of the top graduates from
Oregon high schools in the 1A-4A
classifi cations. Umatilla and Morrow
Counties are represented with fi ve
roster spots on the East team, including
2017 East-West Shrine Game

The experience for the players began
late last week, when they visited the
hospital to meet some of the patients
and families that they are playing for.
Then after a dinner in Pendleton on
Saturday night, the players traveled on
to La Grande for a week of practice at
Eastern Oregon University.
Festivities for the week include a
tri-tip dinner on Thursday night in Baker
City courtesy of the Baker Quarterback
Club, a steak and pancake breakfast on
Saturday in Baker City, and the Gridiron
Tailgater at Baker City Park Saturday
afternoon.
The parade rolls through Baker City
at 11 a.m. and then the game kicks off
at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium. The game
will be tape-delayed on television on
ROOT Sports Northwest on Monday,
Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. and several other times
throughout the week.

The Hermiston junior league base-
ball team’s run to a spot in the Junior
League World Series came up just a few
steps short on Thursday afternoon.

Oregon, could not hang on to a late
lead as Hawaii knocked Oregon out of
the Junior League West Regional by
handing it a 10-7 loss at Pioneer High
School in San Jose, California. Trailing
5-3 in the top of the fi fth, Oregon’s
offense awoke as 4-5-6 hitters of Ethin
Randolph, Gavin Hunter, and Trevor
Wagner each smacked RBI hits to give
Oregon a 7-5 lead. However, Hawaii
battled right back in the bottom of the
fi fth to score three runs to take a 8-7
lead and then scored a pair of insurance
runs in the sixth to seal it.
Rustin Edmiston led the Hermiston
team with three hits out of his leadoff
spot, while Randolph, Hunter and
Wagner all had two hits apiece. Wagner
had two triples and three RBI, while
Randolph and Hunter each added
a double. Sam Schwirse started the
game at pitcher and struck out two in
fi ve innings while allowing eight hits
and eight runs, though only fi ve were
earned. Randolph tossed the fi nal frame
and gave up two runs and two hits and
struck out two.
Oregon opened up the game in a
big way, as Hunter’s RBI single and
Wagner’s two-RBI triple opened up a
3-0 lead in the top of the fi rst inning.
Hawaii chipped away a bit in the bottom
of the fi rst with two runs, and then took
a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the second.
Oregon fi nishes the regional with a
1-2 record.

MISSION — Wildhorse
Resort and Casino has hosted
the Senior Oregon Open Invi-
tational for 15 years now, and
Mike Coston has now walked
away with the tournament
championship fi ve times.
Coston, a PGA Professional
at Semiahmoo Golf and Country
Club in Blaine, Washington,
sailed to the fi nish line for his
fi fth victory with a stunning
10-under 62 on Thursday — the
lowest score of the three-day

Goldschmidt records 3 HR game
CHICAGO (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt
snapped a tie in the ninth inning with his third
long homer of the game, and the Arizona
Diamondbacks pulled out a rain-delayed 10-8
victory over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.
Goldschmidt hit a 3-2 pitch

Former BMCC baseball player
inks professional contract
PENDLETON — Former Blue Mountain
Community College baseball player Matt
Dallas has made his way to the
professional ranks.
Dallas, a pitcher, signed a
contract on Thursday with the
River City Rascals located in
in O’Fallon, Missouri. The
Rascals are an independent
team that plays in the Frontier
League. The Boise, Idaho native played for
the Timberwolves in 2013 and 2014 and
then served as a volunteer coach for the 2015
season.
After leaving BMCC, Dallas pitched for
two seasons at the University of Minnesota
Crookston. He spent the past summer pitching
in the Jayhawk Baseball League for the Derby
Twins in Kansas, where he went 1-1 with a
3.72 ERA in 19 1/3 innings and fi ve saves.
