Tamástslikt celebrates 19th anniversary
Outdoor living culture
village now open
East Oregonian
A colorful new exhibit at
Tamástslikt Cultural Institute
kicks off a month-long celebra-
tion commemorating the muse-
um’s 19th anniversary.
A Kaleidoscope of Color:
American Indian Trade Blankets
opens Friday at the museum,
which is located near Wildhorse
Resort & Casino, off Interstate
84, Exit 216. The First Friday
event is free of charge. Also, the
Kinship Cafe will be frying up
Indian tacos for $7.
In addition, Naami Nishaycht,
the outdoor living culture village,
is open daily through Labor Day
weekend. It’s free with museum
admission.
The village features a teepee
and other structures. Visitors can
learn about local foods, survival
skills, uses of tule reed and the
manufacturing of goods, and
hear stories from tribal leaders.
Kaleidoscope
of
Color
explores commercially produced
trade blankets as an important
facet of American Indian culture.
It showcases 20 pre-1925
blankets
from
well-known
historic manufacturers, including
Pendleton Woolen Mills, Buell
Manufacturing Company, J.
Capps & Sons, Racine Woolen
Mills and Oregon City Woolen
Mills. The featured blankets
are from private collections and
offer a rare opportunity to see
some of the most colorful items
created by American industrial
designers.
Prior to the 19th century, the
blankets were a staple of the fur
trade, especially in Canada and
along the northern tier states.
Navajo weavers were known for
their fine wearing blankets —
often used as robes. A tradition
of using a Pendleton blanket as
burial attire is still a common
practice in Navajo and Zuni
communities.

At the end of the 19th century,
traders encouraged the produc-
tion of rugs for sale to distant
markets. With many Navajo
weavers changing their focus,
enterprising American woolen
mills began producing the
brightly colored blankets.
Celebrating the traditions
of Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla
Walla tribes, Tamástslikt also
features permanent exhibits and
the Coyote Theater, where visi-
tors are introduced to Spilyáy,
the magical coyote who shares
about wisdom and foolishness.
Other anniversary events
include a museum store summer
closeout sale Aug. 10-12. Also,
a special family day is set
for Saturday, Aug. 26, which
includes free cake and afternoon
activities. The annual Kidz
Pow-Wow, which closes out
the outdoor village season, is
Saturday, Sept. 2.
Tamástslikt is open Monday
through Saturdays from 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Kaleidoscope of Color
runs through Oct. 14.
Regular admission is $10 for
adults, $9 for seniors, $6 for
youths 6-17 and free for ages
5 and under. There is a family
rate of $25 for four. Also, the
Libraries of Eastern Oregon has
provided many area libraries
with passes that can be checked
out. And, admission is free the
first Friday of each month.

Strings camp crescendos
with concerts
PENDLETON — A pair of
performances feature participants of
the Oregon East Symphony’s Summer
Strings Music Camp.
The free concerts are Friday
beginning at 3:15 p.m. The first features
intermediate ensembles. The final
concert is at 5 p.m., which includes
the Suzuki class, advanced level
ensembles and advanced, intermediate,
and beginner level orchestras. Both
performances are at Peach Lutheran
Church, 210 N.W. Ninth St., Pendleton.
The camp director is Loree Tucker-
McKenna. Other instructors include
cellist Zach Banks, violinist/composer
Austin Schlichting, violinists and local
instructors Emma Knight and Melinda
Tovey, violinist and former Pendleton
School District strings instructor Patricia
Potter and Suzuki-style instructor Patty
Case.
Summer Strings has been made

Meacham hosts yard sale
MEACHAM — A community-wide
yard sale is this weekend in Meacham.
The event, which also features a
parade at 9:30 a.m., is Saturday from 8
a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot at the
Oregon Trail Store & Deli, 64364 Old
Highway 30, Meacham. People also
are invited to set up a spot — bring a
table and chairs or use the back of your
pickup truck — to sell their goods.
Space is available on a first-come,
first-served basis.
Mtn. Millie’s famous hamburgers
and more will be available for purchase.
Proceeds will benefit the Oregon
Pioneer Cemetery at Meacham and
publication of the monthly Meacham
Gazette.

celebrate park reopening
PENDLETON — The Kiwanis Club
of Pendleton is gearing up to celebrate
the re-opening of Kiwanis Park.
The public is invited to enjoy hot
dogs and popsicles during the free
