PORTLAND — With
more strong hitting and
pitching, Pendleton won again
in lopsided fashion at the
Oregon Little League Softball
State Tournament on Tuesday
to punch its ticket to the cham-
pionship.
It was another run-rule
shortened game as Pendleton
beat SE Portland 12-2 in four
innings, and Sauren Garton
pitched the entire way giving
up just three hits.
She got SE Portland out
in order in the fi rst, two on
comeback hits to the mound,
then Pendleton went right to
work supporting her with four
runs in its fi rst at-bat.
Garton was the lead-off
batter and reached on an error,
then Jaden Samp hit a one-out
single and both of them scored
on a double by Ellie Samford.
After another out, Faith
Broadfoot hit a triple to center
fi eld that pushed Samford in for
the eventual game-winner, and
Kylee Sellers followed with an
RBI double to make it 4-0.
Pendleton added two more
runs in the second and fi ve in
the third before SE Portland
could get onto the scoreboard.

run-rule, Pendleton got two

quick outs in the bottom of
the fourth, but Charlie Mae
Franklin kept the inning going
with a single to center, and
then took second on the throw.
Garton walked to bring up
Nora Yoshioka, and she came
through with a single to center
that brought in Franklin for
the 12-2 win.
Samford led Pendleton
at the plate, going 3 for 3
with three RBI and two runs.
Garton also had a big day
hitting going 2 for 3 with two
RBI and three runs.
The championship round
begins Thursday, and Pend-
leton would have to lose twice
in a row to be eliminated.
Their opponent will be
determined by today’s games
in the losers’ bracket.

La Grande had an inside

Wimbledon
Williams continues to defy age, advances to 10th semifi nals
Will face Britain’s
Konta next
By HOWARD FENDRICH

LONDON — Venus
Williams’ mother could not
stop smiling and laughing.
She had just watched her
37-year-old daughter reach
the Wimbledon semifi nals
for the 10th time and, well,
the whole thing was just a bit
hard to believe.
“She says, ‘I love my job!’
and she means it. I guess
she’s kind of like a boxer:
People think it’s time for
her to quit because she’s too
old,” Oracene Price said after
leaving Centre Court, where
the roof was shut because of
rain Tuesday. “But she keeps
getting back in the ring —
and she seems to be doing
pretty well. This is really
amazing.”
Enjoying
a
career
renaissance deep into her
30s, despite dealing with
an energy-sapping disease,
Williams rode a strong serve
that produced eight aces,
imposing returns and her
court coverage of old to a
6-3, 7-5 victory over French
Open champion Jelena
Ostapenko of Latvia, edging
closer to a sixth singles title
at the All England Club.
“The competition keeps
you growing,” Williams said.
“You have to get better if you
want to stay relevant.”
Somehow, at age 37, she’s
done that. This was her 100th
Wimbledon match, coming
in her 20th appearance.
The fi rst of her trophies at
the grass-court tournament
came in 2000. And now,
for the third match in a row,
Williams beat a player who
was born in 1997 — after she
made her Grand Slam debut
that year.
“The fi rst one was 20
years ago? Lord,” Price said,
her eyes wide, her chuckle
loud. “Well, you know, that’s
a long time.”
This is not exactly new,
though. Williams is the only
woman to have made the
fourth round at each of the
past six majors, and now
she’s into her third semifi nal
in that span. She made it that
far at Wimbledon last year,
too, before losing, and got
to the fi nal at the Australian
Open in January, when she
was beaten by her younger
sister, Serena.
“Who knows if she’s lost a
step?” said Williams’ coach,
David Witt. “She looks pretty

Michigan sports doctor pleads

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A
former Michigan State University and USA
Gymnastics doctor pleaded guilty Tuesday to
possessing child pornography, admitting he
tried to get rid of the evidence last
fall while police were investigating
allegations that he had sexually
assaulted young female athletes.
Dr. Larry Nassar pleaded

Michigan. Each could land him in
prison for up to 20 years.
He is awaiting trial on charges in three separate
cases alleging that he sexually molested a total
of nine girls, including eight who were gymnasts
seeking treatment for injuries. He has pleaded
not guilty, and his attorney, Shannon Smith, said
Nassar intends to proceed to trial in those cases.

terms of the overall

sport that we have this
level of interest at this
price level, but it would

No getting around Donald Trump
at the US Women’s Open
BEDMINSTER, N.J. (AP) — There will
be no getting around President Donald Trump
for the USGA and the world’s top golfers at the
U.S. Women’s Open this week.
The biggest event in
women’s golf is being held
at Trump National Golf
Club, and the fi rst day of
formal interviews Tuesday had as much to do
with the tournament that starts Thursday as it
did about the Republican president.
The USGA has faced pressure from women’s
groups and three Democratic U.S. senators to move
the event because of Trump’s comments about
women and minorities, namely audio that surfaced
during the campaign of Trump vulgarly describing
his interactions with women. The USGA refused,
keeping the marquee event at the course located a
few miles from its headquarters in Far Hills.
