Spieth maintains lead in Travelers Championship

shape on 18. He was on the right
edge of the fairway and looking at
a second shot 105 yards from the
hole. But he slipped during the
swing and the ball went just 63
yards and farther right.
“My right foot completely
came out from under me,” he said.
“Obviously, there was a tiny bit
of drizzle. Maybe a little bit of
surface water. Just, I don’t know.
It was weird. As soon as I started
down, I just felt it and I couldn’t
stop.”
McIlroy may have saved his
tournament on the 13th. After
hitting his first shot in the water
and taking a drop, he hit his third
shot to 17 feet and made par. He
then putted in from off the green
on 14.
McIlroy, who didn’t
qualify for the weekend at Erin
Hills, hasn’t missed consecutive
cuts since 2012.
Two-time Travelers champion
Bubba Watson, who missed the
cut at Erin Hills, will have another
weekend off. He followed up a 75
in the first round with a 67 and
finished at 2 over.
Weather could also affect the
scoring Saturday. A forecast of
rain led tournament officials to
move the start of the third round
back to 11 a.m., with the players
going out in threesomes off the
first and 10th tees.

CROMWELL, Conn. — Jordan
Spieth played well enough in the
second round of the Travelers
Championship to stay in the lead.
Rory McIlroy played just well
enough to stay in the tournament.
Spieth shot a 1-under 69 on
Friday morning, then watched as a
windy afternoon kept anyone from
overtaking him.
The conditions also kept fourth-
ranked Jason Day from making
the cut for a second straight week.
He bogeyed the 18th for a 70 to
finish at 2 over. No. 3 McIlroy shot
a 73, also closing with a bogey,
but managed to just sneak into the
weekend at even par.
Spieth, who began the day
one shot ahead after a first-round
63, started on the back nine. The
23-year-old Texan had to recover
from a double bogey on the par-5
13th hole after hitting his tee shot
left and out-of-bounds. He also
had four birdies and a bogey to
reach 8 under.
“We’ve been kind of far behind
in a lot of the events in making
comeback runs,” said Spieth, the
two-time major champion who
tied for 35th last week in the U.S.
Open. “But being able to be toward
the front of the pack on a Saturday

afternoon is a beautiful position to
be in and one that we’ll certainly
embrace. I’m going to try to have
a lot of fun this weekend.”
Patrick Reed (66) and Troy
Merritt (68) were tied for second.
Both fought off wind gusts that
exceeded 20 mph to hit 11 of 14
fairways and 14 of 18 greens.
“A golf course like this, even
when the wind is blowing, if you’re
hitting your tee shots straight,
you’re going to have some wedges
into the greens,” Reed said.
U.S. Open champion Brooks
Koepka isn’t in Connecticut this
week, but former Florida State
teammate Chase Seiffert is in
contention. The 25-year-old had
to qualify Monday to get into the
tournament. He made two eagles
Friday and finished with a 66 to
reach 6 under.
“I came into the week with no
status on any tour, but I knew my
game was really good,” Seiffert

said. “I just had to get it done. To
come out and play the first two
rounds the way I did, it gives me a
lot of confidence.
Wesley Bryan (67), Daniel
Summerhays (68) and Boo
Weekley (68) also were 5 under.
Graham DeLaet led briefly
during the afternoon, but had a
double bogey on 18 for a 70 to
drop into the group at 5 under.
Eighty-five players made the
cut and 68 finished within seven
shots of the lead.
The biggest drama of the after-
noon was watching the world’s
third- and fourth-ranked players
try to make it to the weekend.
Day was close, until he hit his
second shot at 18 into a greenside
bunker. He failed to get up and
down, missing a 6-footer for par.

Parade of forwards at
top of NHL draft
Jordan Bell gets unique call on draft night
By JAY COHEN
Associated Press
CHICAGO — Cody
Glass played in a youth
hockey tournament in Las
Vegas when he was 10. His
Junior Steelers team finished
a disappointing second.
He is looking forward
to many more games in Sin
City.
Glass was selected by
the expansion Vegas Golden
Knights with their first-ever
pick Friday night, going No.
6 overall as part of a parade
of forwards at the top of the
NHL draft. The 18-year-old
Canadian center had 32
goals and 62 assists in 69
games last season for the
Portland Winterhawks of the
Western Hockey League.
“I didn’t really see that
as a hockey place when I
went there, but now, with
the new team and the fans
and season tickets sold
out, I think hockey will
be unbelievable,” Glass
said. “Just being there and
walking down the Strip, it’s
something that’s really nice.
You don’t see too much of
that in Winnipeg.”
The first NHL draft in
Chicago began with another
18-year-old forward, with
Swiss center Nico Hischier
going No. 1 overall to the
New Jersey Devils. The
Philadelphia Flyers then
grabbed Nolan Patrick at
No. 2.
Ten of the top 13 picks
were listed as centers.
Defensemen
Miro
Heiskanen (No. 3 overall
to Dallas) and Cale Makar
(No. 4 to Colorado) and
right wing Owen Tippett
(No. 10 to Florida) were the
lone exceptions. Vegas also
opted for another forward
prospect with its second
of three picks in the first
round, taking Nick Suzuki
at No. 12 before selecting
Swedish defenseman Erik
Brannstrom with the 15th
pick.
“The forward group is
real strong,” New Jersey
general manager Ray Shero
said.
The 18-year-old Hischier
is the highest drafted Swiss
player in the NHL history.
He had 38 goals and 86
points in 57 games with
the Halifax Mooseheads
of the Quebec Major
Junior Hockey League this
past season. He spent the
previous two seasons in the
Swiss pro league, where
he was coached by current
Ottawa Senators coach Guy
Boucher.
Hischier fits in nicely
with Shero’s desire to put
a faster team on the ice.
New Jersey is coming off its
worst season in nearly three
decades, finishing with a
28-40-14 record.
But Hischier is just over
6-feet tall and listed at 179
pounds, and will need to put
on more muscle to succeed
in the NHL.
“I love hockey,” he said.
“It’s my biggest goal to play
in the NHL. I’m so happy.”

OAKLAND,
Calif.
— Jordan Bell knows he
will most certainly get an
earful from Draymond
Green come training camp
as a Golden State Warriors
rookie.
Green came looking
for him on draft night with
a FaceTime attempt after
acquiring his new team-
mate’s digits from general
manager Bob Myers. But
Bell — out with friends
celebrating
—
didn’t
answer because the number
was unfamiliar.
Bell decided he would
text back instead.
“I was like, ‘Who is
this?’” Bell recalled Friday,
when he was formally
introduced and given his
new No. 2 Golden State
jersey at team headquarters.
“He didn’t reply so I
called the number and said,
‘Who is this?’ Then he
was like, ‘Yo, I FaceTimed
you, hang up right now and
FaceTime me right back,
don’t call me,’” Bell said.

Golden State Warriors NBA basketball draft pick
Jordan Bell, right, and general manager Bob Myers
pose for photos with a jersey at a news conference
in Oakland, Calif., Friday, June 23, 2017.
“I FaceTimed him and he
didn’t answer. I was like,
all right. I waited like five
seconds and I called him
back FaceTime and he
answered ... and we started
talking about it. He was
like, ‘Enjoy this night,
celebrate, it only happens
once, but after this time we
have to get back to work,
we’re trying to get rings
over here.’”
The NBA champions
began the night Thursday
without a draft pick but
acquired Bell in a trade
with the Bulls. The 6-foot-9
forward
and
Pac-12
Defensive Player of the
Year out of Oregon was the
38th overall selection by
Chicago.
Bell had been upset he
dropped so far in the draft,
then everything changed
once the Warriors made a
move for him. Green was
drafted 35th overall out
of Michigan State in 2012
and still has a chip on his
shoulder about it. In fact,
he can name every team
in order and its selection
above him that draft year.
“Draymond will be a fun
challenge for you,” Myers
said. “Draymond texted me
as I was driving home and
he said, ‘What the’ and then
expletive ‘is your problem’
to me? So you can fill in the
blank. Then he said, ‘I have
to hear about this’ expletive
‘on the internet, you didn’t’
expletive ‘tell me about it.’
So I couldn’t text and drive
so I called him and I said,
‘OK, all right, calm down.’”
Green demanded he
be able to talk to Bell, so
Myers obliged with the new
rookie’s contact info.
Green’s teammates are
accustomed to his intensity.
He even yells at them from
time to time.
“He’s like our team mom
in a way,” joked Myers.
“He’s the one that you have
to kind of get through him.”

Raiders, QB Carr
agree to record
extension
ALAMEDA, Calif.
(AP) — Derek Carr and
general manager Reggie
McKenzie never doubted
the two sides could reach
a long-term contract
agreement to keep the
quarterback with the
Raiders before Carr’s
self-imposed training camp
deadline.
So the two sides
were able to agree on a
five-year, $125 million
extension that makes Carr
the NFL’s richest player, at
least temporarily.
The $25 million per
year in new money is
the richest contract ever
in the NFL, beating out
the $24.8 million a year
Andrew Luck got from
Indianapolis. That could
be surpassed with Detroit’s
Matthew Stafford and
Washington’s Kirk Cousins
in line for new deals soon.
But Carr is not worried
about that and the Raiders
are pleased to have the face
of their franchise under
contract through 2022 as
they prepare to move to
Las Vegas in 2020.
