The project is intended to reduce surface and canopy hazardous fuels using mechanical treatments (logging and mastication) and prescribed burning to modify potential wildfire behavior within portions of the Granite Creek Watershed. This project planning area is approximately 37,800 acres in size: 23,990 acres within the North Fork John Day Ranger District on the Umatilla National Forest (63 percent); and 13,810 acres within the Whitman Ranger District on the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest (37 percent). The planning area also includes approximately 9,500 acres of the North Fork John Day Wilderness. Ian Reid, North Fork John Day District Ranger, and Jeff Tomac, Whitman District Ranger, are the Responsible Officials for this project.
