BMCC womens’
team title reign ends
East Oregonian
CASPER, Wyoming —
After two straight seasons as
women’s team champions at the
College National Finals Rodeo,
Blue Mountain Community
College’s reign comes to an end.
A surprisingly disappointing
performance in the long round
led to just one qualifi er to the
short go for the Timberwolf
women, helping BMCC to a
26th place fi nish with just 60
points on Saturday. It was their
worst fi nish at the CNFR since
2010 when the Timberwolves
fi nished 30th with 20 points.
The Timberwolves came into
the CNFR ranked No. 6 in the
national standings 900 points
out of fi rst place
After failing to qualify for the
CNFR in 2011, BMCC rattled
off fi ve straight top-10 fi nishes
including the last two national
championships. Sam Houston
State won the team title this year
with 485 points.
Danyelle Williams, the 2016
women’s all-around champion,
was the lone short go qualifi er
for the women, and she turned
in a 20.49-second ride in barrel
racing to fi nish 12th in the round
and 12th in the average.
On the men’s side, tie-down
roper Preston Pederson and
saddle bronc rider Johnny Espe-
land made it through to the short
go. Pederson fi nished fourth
in the round with a time of 9.2
seconds, earning him a seventh
place fi nish int he average with
48.7 on four. Espeland regis-
tered a no score in the saddle
bronc short go, and fi nished
12th in the average with 143.5
points.
The men’s team fi nished 43rd
overall with 70 points, while
Panhandle State won the title
with 827.5 points. Walla Walla
Community College fi nished
six spots ahead of BMCC with
85 points.

College World Series
OMAHA, Neb. — The dominance
Oregon State has shown all season was
on full display Monday night.
Bryce Fehmel limited LSU to two hits
in eight innings, KJ Harrison hit the fi rst
College World Series grand slam at TD
Ameritrade Park, and Oregon State beat
the Tigers 13-1 for its 23rd straight win.
The Beavers (56-4), who matched the
school-record win streak they set earlier
this season, took control of Bracket 1.
They don’t play again until Friday, and
need one more win to advance to next
week’s best-of-three fi nals.
“We just talked before the game about
this is our time, this is our opportunity,”
Oregon State coach Pat Casey said. “This
is what we came here for. Let’s not miss
that moment. So the guys played great.”

the two longest active win streaks in the
country was one of the most anticipated
at the CWS in years. It turned out to be a
dud. The 12-run margin tied the largest in
a CWS game in the seven years it’s been
played at TD Ameritrade.
LSU (49-18) had its 17-game win
streak end with its most lopsided loss in
Omaha since a 20-6 rout by Cal State
Fullerton in 1994.
“It wasn’t what we expected or hoped
for, obviously,” Tigers coach Paul Main-
ieri said. “Heck of a way for a 17-game
winning streak to end. Right from the

Locals play in All-Star Series
Three local players participated
in the 45th Annual Oregon Athletic
Coaches Association All-Star Basket-
ball Series over the weekend.
Pendleton’s Caden Smith was on the
State squad for the 6A/5A Metro-State
series, and Weston-McEwen’s Shaw
Broncheau and Heppner’s Logan Grieb
were selected to play for the 4A/3A/2A
East squad in the series for players
who were seniors during the 2016-17
season.
In the large-school action, the Metro
squad made of Portland-area players
swept both games and 133-118 and
129-119. Statistics were not available.
The East also lost both its games, but
Broncheau and Grieb were two of their
team’s top contributers in each game.
On Friday, June 16, the North beat
the East 126-86 at Northwest Christian
University in Eugene.
Broncheau and Grieb each scored
10 points in the loss, and the East was
paced by La Grande’s Zack Jacobs with
23 points. Broncheau added three steals,
three rebounds and an assist, and Grieb
had four steals and four rebounds.
The North, which won the regional
title on Saturday by beating the South
squad, was led by the 28 points and fi ve
assists from Dayton’s Zach Bernards,
and Columbia Christian’s Levi Dalzell
pulled in 10 rebounds to go with 17
points.
Then on Saturday in the third-place
game at Wilsonville High School, the
East team was only down one point at
halftime but couldn’t keep up with the
West in the second half and lost 116-71.
Grieb scored 12 points and
Broncheau had seven, and the East
was led by the 20 points from Imbler’s
Brandon McGilvray. The West was led
by 24 points from Philomath’s Austin
Gerding and 23 points from North
Marion’s Tanner Scanlon.

Cavaliers part ways with GM
CLEVELAND (AP) — David Griffi n’s run
with the Cleveland Cavaliers is over after one
title and three straight trips to the NBA Finals.
The general manager and team mutually
parted ways on Monday when owner David
Gilbert said Griffi n’s contract will
not be extended once it expires
June 30.
Griffi n’s departure comes three
days before the draft — the Cavs
are currently without a pick — and
on the eve of free agency.
The 47-year-old Griffi n had
Griffi n
been Cleveland’s GM since
May 2014. He oversaw the team’s return to
prominence after LeBron James came back from
Miami. Griffi n orchestrated the trade that brought
Kevin Love from Minnesota, and he bolstered
the Cavs’ roster with other trades and free agents.
Griffi n was the fourth GM to work for Gilbert,
who bought the Cavs in 2005.
“He is one of the all-
time best healers. He
applies himself as well
as a person can do in
terms of getting back.
He’s got all the grit and
the perseverance about
making it through this as
quickly as you possibly
can, so he’s doing great.“

Dodgers rookie fastest to hit
21 home runs in MLB history
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dodgers rookie
Cody Bellinger became the fastest player to
21 home runs in baseball history, connecting
in his fi rst two at-bats against New York Mets
right-hander Zach Wheeler on
Monday night.
Bellinger, who was not called
up until three weeks into the
season, now has 21 home runs in
his fi rst 51 games.
That surpasses by one the
Bellinger
totals of Gary Sanchez (New York
Yankees 2016) and Wally Berger
(Boston Braves 1930).
Bellinger, 21, now leads the National
League in home runs. His fi rst game was April
25. He has fi ve multi-homer games, tying Mike
Piazza for the Dodgers’ rookie record.
