MARINERS:
Continued from 1B
OSU’s KJ
Harrison, in
the middle of
the pack, is
mobbed by
teammates
and coach Pat
Casey (9) after
he hit a grand
slam in the
sixth inning
of Monday’s
College World
Series game
against LSU in
Omaha, Neb.
Continued from 1B
start things didn’t go well for us.”
Starter Eric Walker (8-2) left the
game after throwing four pitches in
the third inning because of forearm
tightness. Caleb Gilbert held the
Beavers for a couple of innings, but
they capitalized on a couple of LSU
misplays to go up 3-0 in the fifth.
“They’re definitely a scrappy
offense,” Gilbert said. “I thought I
was making some good pitches. They
would just foul it off, and I’d have to
go right back at it, do it again. Just
couldn’t get that put-away when it
was crunch time.”
Oregon State broke the game
open in the sixth.
Harrison
hammered
Hunter
Newman’s first pitch to him over the
left-center fence for the first CWS
grand slam since 2010, the last year
the event was played at Rosenblatt
Stadium.
Harrison broke into a wide smile
as he watched the ball fly out, his trot
turned into a run and he whooped and
pounded his chest as he approached
teammates waiting at home plate.
Harrison has four home runs and 14
RBIs in seven NCAA Tournament
games.
“That’s the stuff you dream of
doing,” Harrison said, “and for it to
come true on such a big stage is an
amazing feeling.”
Fehmel (6-2), who pitched a
complete game in the Beavers’ super
regional-clinching win over Vander-
bilt on June 10, made his second
Tuesday, June 20, 2017
from Triple-A Tacoma on
May 23 gave Seattle the lead.
Quickly behind in the count
against Alex Wilson (1-4),
Zunino worked it to 3-2 and
drove a slider beyond the
bullpens in deep left field.
Zunino added one more
with a shot over the center
field wall in the eighth inning
off Francisco Rodriguez.
Since returning from the
minors with a retooled stance
and approach at the plate,
Zunino is hitting .338 with 28
RBIs. He’s already set a new
franchise record for the most
RBIs in a month by a catcher.
Four Seattle relievers
combined to hold Detroit to
two hits over the final four
innings. James Pazos (2-1) got
out of a bases-loaded jam with
strikeouts of Mikie Mahtook
and Andrew Romine in the
sixth.
Heredia’s homer was his
fifth of the season and the
only major mistake by starter
Anibal Sanchez. Making
his first start of the season,
Sanchez scattered five hits
over five innings. He pitched
out of a bases-loaded jam in
the second inning but couldn’t
get through the fifth unscathed.
Sanchez had made 11
appearances as a reliever for
Detroit before being sent to
AP Photo/Nati Harnik
postseason start since the rotation
was adjusted to account for the loss
of Luke Heimlich.
Fehmel wiggled out of a mini jam
in the fifth before Zach Watson’s
homer in the seventh allowed LSU
to avoid getting shut out for the first
time in its 62 CWS games.
“I guess the main thing was to
keep them off-balance as best I
could,” Fehmel said. “I mixed all
three pitches for strikes, and I did
that for eight innings to the best of
my ability, and it worked out.”
LOTS OF PITCHERS
LSU used eight pitchers to tie
the CWS record for most in a game.
Walker and Gilbert were the only
ones to work at least two innings.
Those eight pitchers combined to
walk 12 Oregon State batters, which
is the most in a single game in Main-
ieri’s 11 years at LSU.
HE DOESN’T GIVE UP MANY
Newman, LSU’s former closer,
had not allowed a home run this
season until Harrison’s grand slam.
It was only the second home run
Newman has allowed in the 100
innings he’s worked since his
freshman season in 2015.
MORE ON THAT SLAM
There were 196 bases-loaded
at-bats in the CWS between Matt
Curry’s grand slam for TCU in 2010
and Harrison’s slam Monday. It was
the sixth slam hit at the stadium
in 313 total games since 2011.
Creighton plays its home games at
the park.
UP NEXT
Oregon State awaits Florida
State or LSU in the Bracket 1 final
on Friday at 3 p.m.. The Tigers play
Florida State (46-22) in an elimina-
tion game on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Triple-A Toledo and making
four starts in the minors.
Seattle starter Sam Gavi-
glio struggled with his control,
walking four and letting his
pitch count climb early, but
avoided any big innings.
Gaviglio made it through
five innings, allowing just a
bases-loaded groundout and
Ian Kinsler’s RBI double. But
Gaviglio’s spot on the 25-man
roster is uncertain with the
return of Felix Hernandez and
possibly Hisashi Iwakuma to
the rotation later this week.
ON THE FARM
Iwakuma and SS Jean
Segura both struggled in their
rehab outings at Triple-A
Tacoma on Monday. Iwakuma
lasted just two innings, giving
up four runs and four hits. He
was supposed to throw 70 to
75 pitches, but was pulled
after throwing just 49. Segura,
recovering from a high ankle
sprain, played five innings at
shortstop and was 0 for 3. The
Mariners hope to get Segura
back later this week.
UP NEXT
Tigers: Jordan Zimmer-
mann (5-5) tries for his fourth
straight quality start.
Mariners: Ariel Miranda
(6-3) looks to rebound from
a loss in his last start when he
allowed 10 hits and six runs.
The loss snapped a five-game
win streak.
