Adams wins the distinction of being the
second town in Umatilla county to subscribe
her portion of the $30,000 Red Cross fund.
The general committee was notified last night
that the Adams committee had not only raised
$1,000, the amount assigned, but had $1,500
already on hand. Indications are that Umatilla
county’s full amount will be raised before the
opening date of the big drive. Athena, the first
Umatilla county town to fulfill its quota, has
jumped her $2,500 to $3,000. Weston has
already raised $1,750 of her $2,500, Helix
this morning had $2,000, Milton $1,750 and
Stanfield $500 of her $800.

The body of a Texas woman, Mary Ann
Driggs, wanted in Umatilla County for
burglary of Price’s IGA store in Milton-Free-
water of $10,000 last July, is reported to be
buried near Diamond Lake, Oregon. H.H.
Davis, an investigator for the Dallas, Texas,
district attorney’s office, said Tuesday that two
persons have confirmed the death and burial of
the woman. Apparently the woman died from
an overdose of drugs obtained in the burglary
of an Oregon drug store sometime in March.
“There is no known homicide,” said Richard
Courson, Umatilla County district attorney.
“No body has yet been found. This is a just a
report so far.”

The drought in Oregon — now in its sixth
year — has touched off water shortages in
some towns. But it isn’t expected to affect
Pendleton’s water supply — this year. Because
of a mild winter and hot, dry spring, Public
Works Director Jerry Odman said Pendleton
is ahead of its typical summer water usage by
about three weeks. There’s no concern about
city wells going dry anytime soon. But water
levels in those wells are continuing to drop at a
steady pace, although weekend rains undoubt-
edly slowed the descent.
