Continued from 1B
associate coach Pat Bailey
and former Pendleton coach
Mark Whitten.
It was evident just how
many people that Hodgen
has had an impact on, and
current Pendleton assistant
coach Travis Zander put
it into perspective. In his
speech, Zander pointed out
that in Hodgen’s 43-year
career, he has coached more
than 1,000 kids spanning
all levels of Pendleton high
school baseball and lasted
through five Pendleton head
coaching changes — from
Gary Yates to Haguewood.
The bulk of his coaching
tenure has been spent
as the head coach of the
junior varsity squad and the
Hodgen Distributing Legion
team, where he amassed
more than 1,600 wins, all
while continuously molding
the next wave of Pendleton
baseball stars.
Two of those stars were
brothers Dave and Dan
Alderman who played under
Hodgen back in the mid
1970s and early 1980s and
went on to play Division
I college baseball. Both
brothers currently live in the
Youth baseball
camp coming to
Milton-Freewater
MILTON-FREE-
WATER — Michaud

provide competitive games.

Longtime Pendleton baseball coach Mike Hodgen ac-
cepts a commemorative plaque from current Pend-
leton head coach T.J. Haguewood during a ceremony
honoring Hodgen’s 40-plus year career on Saturday at
Bob White Ballpark.
Tri-Cities and didn’t hesitate
to make the one hour drive to
go down memory lane and
honor their old coach.
“He was always such
a fun-loving guy,” Dave
Alderman recalled. “He had
a tremendous work ethic, if
you needed extra cuts he’s
always out there throwing.
At his age with us, he was a
real young man so it’s a little
bit of a different connection
now because the age gap
wasn’t as big. But he’d never
get too down on you or never
get too high on you, he just
made you work hard.
“He always taught us
to respect yourself, respect
your opponent and do the
best you can, that’s what I
remember most.”
Quinn Williams coached
summer ball with Hodgen
from 1994-1999 and spent
many road trips and long
nights at the field with the
coach, which gave him a
pretty good understanding of
the type of person he is.
“What comes to mind first
and foremost is his class,”
Williams said, “Doing things
the right way, winning the
right way and losing the right
way but always working
hard to that end regardless
of the outcome. His love for
the game and for the players
and fellow coaches is second
to none.”
For the past two seasons,
Hodgen moved up from
junior varsity ranks to
varsity where he has been
the pitching coach for
Haguewood’s teams. As
of now, Hodgen plans on
finishing out the summer
as an assistant for Hodgen
Distributing and returning
for his 44th season with
Pendleton baseball next
spring. Though speaking
Saturday, he pointed out that
even with all the wins and
great players he’s coached,
there is one thing missing
from his resume.
“I’m looking out toward
center field and we know
in our program there’s one
thing to continually search
for,” he said. “It’s not just the
wins but it would great some
year to put a state champion-
ship flag or banner up.
“But personally, I feel like
I’m already a champion.”

HERMISTON
9,
SANDY 4 — At Pendleton,
Hermiston finished off the
Ashlee Hodgen Memorial
Tournament much better
than it began, winning its last
two games including a 9-4
win over Sandy on Sunday.
Hermiston took control of
the game in the second inning
when it dropped a four-spot
on Sandy. Cole Campbell
got things started with a
two-RBI single to center
field, then Paytan Smith hit
a sacrifice fly to center to
bring in Campbell. A fielding
error by Sandy on a grounder
from Brylee Dufloth brought
home Andrew James for the
fourth run.
Sandy scored a pair in
the third inning to make it a
close game, but then Herm-
iston answered with two
more runs in the bottom of
the frame and never looked
back. Campbell had a team-
high three RBI, while Caden
Schwirse and Wyatt Nolan
each led the team with two
hits.
