NBA FINALS: Warriors gunning for sweep on Friday
Golden
State War-
riors for-
ward Kevin
Durant (35)
reacts in
the closing
moments
against the
Cleveland
Cavaliers
in Game 3
of basket-
ball’s NBA
Finals in
Cleveland,
Wednes-
day, June
7, 2017.
Golden
State won
118-113.
Continued from 1B
the right side and the Warriors
closed it out with four free
throws in the final 12.9 seconds
before celebrating briefly on the
floor and then charging down
the hallway to their locker room.
After winning Games 1 and
2 by a combined 41 points at
home, the Warriors had to scrap
for all 48 minutes to take down
the Cavs, who will need a similar
effort to avoid being swept by a
team with few weaknesses.
James and Irving were relent-
less in the second half and it
appeared they had done enough
to get Cleveland over the top and
perhaps back in the series.
Durant, though, was not
going to be denied. Not after
getting this close, not after
enduring so much criticism for
leaving Oklahoma City and not
with a chance to put the Cava-
liers in an insurmountable hole.
The 7-footer finished 10 of
18 from the field with eight
rebounds and four assists. Curry,
who has benefited more than
any other player by Durant’s
arrival and is healthy in these
Finals, added 13 rebounds and
six assists.

Golden State, which made
a record 9 3-pointers in the
first quarter and finished 16 of
33 behind the arc, also got just
what it needed from its reserves
as Andre Iguodala had several
big plays, none bigger than
stripping James of the ball on
a potential tying 3-pointer with
12.6 seconds left.
Cleveland had collapsed in
the third quarter of the first two
games, letting the Warriors run
away and hide.
Irving didn’t let that happen
in Game 3.
Showing off his ability to
spin in shots high off the back-
board, Irving scored 16 in the
third quarter and the Cavs held
the Warriors to 22 points in their
lowest scoring output in any
quarter in this postseason.
The Cavaliers, though,
couldn’t get far enough ahead
in the fourth to get comfortable
and the Warriors kept chipping
into their lead before Durant’s
defining 3-pointer.
Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue
decided not to change his starting
lineup for Game 3, sticking with
the slumping Smith at shooting
guard. He also insisted that his
team was better off playing at a
high tempo than trying to slow
down the Warriors.
Cleveland came out full
throttle, matching the Warriors
step for step and shot for shot in
the opening minutes. But Curry
hit back-to-back 3s on a 10-0
run to close the entertaining and
exhausting quarter.
MARINERS: Bergman pitches tonight as Seattle goes for sweep
Continued from 1B
homer capped a four-run fifth
against Seattle starter Yovani
Gallardo — all with two outs.
Ehire Adrianza doubled and
Brian Dozier walked. Joe Mauer
hit an RBI single to tie it 2-all,
and Sano followed with his 15th
homer.
Seattle got a run back in the
fifth after Zunino walked and
Ruiz was hit by a pitch. Zunino
advanced to third on a flyout to
center and came home on Tyler
Smith’s sacrifice fly.
Gallardo gave up five runs
and six hits in a season-high
seven innings.
Zunino and Ruiz, batting
eighth and ninth, opened the
third with consecutive homers to
put Seattle up 2-1. Zunino lined
the first pitch of the inning to left
field. Ruiz, filling in at desig-
nated hitter for ailing Nelson
Cruz, followed with a drive into
the upper deck in left for his first
home run of the season.

ALL-GOL:
Continued from 1B
following Collete Robbert in 2014-15 and
Mallory Copeland in 2016.
Copeland joined Fortune and two other
Pioneers on the all-GOL first team, as senior
infielder Sydney Richwine (.250 avg., 10
RBI) and freshman outfielder Ashlyn Marly
(.350 avg., 14 RBI) also grabbed recog-
nition. Copeland, who made it as a pitcher
last season, slotted in as the first team utility
player after she slugged her way to a .442
average, two home runs and 17 RBI and
touted a 1.57 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 49
innings in the circle.
Seniors Rachael Lyon and Kaitlyn Slusa-
renko and freshmen Sevin Birdwell and
Graci Bullock all brought home second team
honors, while pitchers Sydney Earls and
McKenna Stallings as well as junior infielder
Faith Kelly were honorable mentions.
Pioneers coach Nicole Christian was also
continued her streak of Coach of the Year
awards, this time sharing it with La Grande’s
Kirk Travis.
On the baseball side, Mac-Hi’s disap-
pointing season led to the Pioneers landing
just one player on the GOL all-league teams.
That honor went to sophomore Jesus Vela,
who grabbed a second team infield spot.
La Grande, the Class 4A state champion,
swept the GOL’s top awards as junior GJ
Blackman was named Player of the Year and
Parker McKinley was named Coach of the
Year. La Grande had 11 selections overall on
the two teams and six first team selections.
