McKay Creek celebrates Mother’s Day
Smiles and hugs were
abundant as residents,
family members and friends
enjoyed a special Mother’s
Day celebration at McKay
Creek Estates.
Executive
director
Noemi Wiseman said a
large turnout gathered and
enjoyed specialty desserts
created to share with others
at the Pendleton assisted
living facility. The event
also included raffle draw-
ings, and prizes for the
residents with the most chil-
dren and grandchildren. In
addition, Louisa Krosting
was recognized as the 2017
Mother of the Year.
The
98-year-old,
Wiseman said, was surprised
by the announcement. She
received a certificate of
appreciation, a wall decora-
tion and a crown.
Roses were distributed
to the residents and lots
of pictures were taken as
people visited and shared
memories.

Pendleton track runs
away with donation
The Buckaroo Booster
Club recently donated
$250,000 to the Pend-
leton School District.
The money will help
in paying for improve-
ments at the Pendleton
High
School
track
complex. The majority
of the donation will be
used to purchase and
install a lighting system,
which will allow athletic
activities in the evening.
In addition, part of the
money will be used to
purchase a new score-
board.
The donation from the
Buckaroo Boosters will
be added to the remaining
bond funds the school
district is using to improve
the facility, said club
president Kevin Porter. It
will provide upgrades for
multiple uses, including
track and field events,
soccer and football.
A nonprofit entity, the
Buckaroo Booster Club’s
mission is to promote
athletic
excellence,
positive
community
image and competitive
programs by providing
financial assistance and
support to the school’s
athletic programs and
co-curricular activities.
The membership includes
alumni,
community
members and businesses.

Hermiston American Legion
Post elects new officers
Glenn Bradley is the
new post commander of
Hermiston
American
Legion Post #37.
Other officers elected
for 2017-18 during the
May 1 meeting include
Gary Hartinger, first
vice commander; John
Kuhnert, second vice
commander; Gary Hall,
adjutant; Bill Jennings,
finance officer; Tom
Reamer, chaplain; Bill
Runion, historian; Jodine
Frost, service officer; and
Willie Boyd, sergeant-at-
arms.
The gathering also
included a discussion of
upcoming projects for the
year and the American
Legion State Session,
which will be held in June
at Warm Springs.
A highlight of Amer-
ican Legion activities,
Hartinger said, was an
April visit at the Nixy-
aawii Governance Center
by Charles E. Schmidt,
National American Legion
commander. Schmidt is
the first National American
Legion commander from
Oregon.
Meetings are held
the first Monday of each
month at 7 p.m. at the
Veterans of Foreign Wars
Hall, located at 45 W.
Cherry Ave., Hermiston.
Members include veterans
from Hermiston and the
surrounding area. For

and supporters were recog-
nized during the Hermiston/
Pendleton Special Olym-
pics Local Program #510
awards event.
Athletes, coaches, volun-
teers and family members
gathered May 23 at The
Arc Building in Hermiston
to celebrate those who help
make the program a success.
Among those honored were
Coach of the Year Kris
Neustel; Business of the Year
Hermiston Drug & Gift;
Volunteer of the Year Cindy
Middleton; Female Athlete
of the Year Jillian Smalley
and Male Athlete of the Year
Trampus Jeffreys.
Special
Olympics
provides year-round athletic
training and sports compe-
titions for individuals with
intellectual and develop-
mental disabilities. To partic-
ipate, athletes must be age 6
or older. There is no charge to
participate.
Local athletes are now
focusing on training for golf,
bocce and athletics (track
and field). In addition, they
are collecting pledges for the
annual walk-a-thon to help
raise money for the local
program. The fundraiser is
Tuesday, June 20 at 6 p.m. at
the track at Armand Larive
Middle School, 1497 S.W.
Ninth St., Hermiston.

Memorial Garden blooms thanks to local Boy Scouts
While most people were
relaxing during the Memorial
Day weekend, a determined
Boy Scout was toiling in the
soil at The Arc Building in
Hermiston.

#679 was sprucing up The
Arc Memorial Garden
as part of his Eagle Scout
project, said Kristi Smalley
of The Arc.
Supervised by Boy Scout
leaders Pat McDonough
and Jenny Miller, along
with fellow Boy Scouts
Jason Simpson and Isaac
Reardon of Troop #654, the
dedicated group of volunteers
came together to work on the
project May 27. They trans-
formed the front flower beds
into an oasis of color with
plants provided by West-
winds Nursery of Hermiston
and D & B Farm Supply of
Pendleton, Smalley said.
Miller also committed to
constructing four benches
that will be attached to
the front porch to provide
outdoor seating, Smalley
said. Michele Keitzke, The
Arc president, was also on
hand, providing a rototiller
and guidance for the project.
In its ninth season, the
garden has had a number
of volunteers assist in its
creation and continuance.
It was established to honor
the memory of individuals
who died while residing in
Oregon’s state institutions
for people with intellectual
People can support the
garden project through a
donation to The Arc Umatilla
County. The tax deductible
donations are distributed
equally between The Arc
and college scholarships for
individuals with intellectual
disabilities attending Blue
Mountain
Community
College.

Thumb 4-H Club of Athena
prepared the flower beds and
planted flowers to assist in
beautification, Smalley said. A
pair of club members had lost
their fathers in the previous
year and wanted to do some-
thing in their memory.
As part of the Memorial
Garden project, members of
The Arc also place flowers
during
Memorial
Day
weekend at the headstone
located in Pendleton’s Olney
Cemetery for residents who
were living at Eastern Oregon
Hospital and Training Center
who died between 1913 and
1982. Many of the residents,
Smalley said, died during
that era without a family
connection to honor their
passing.
