UN warns Yemen conflict is
leading to country’s collapse
“The people of Yemen are being
subjected to deprivation, disease and death
as the world watches,” O’Brien warned.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N.
humanitarian chief warned Tuesday that
civil war is causing Yemen to spiral toward
total collapse with the threat of famine
increasing and over 55,000 suspected
cholera cases since late April.
Stephen O’Brien told the U.N. Security
Council that “Yemen now has the ignominy
of being the world’s largest food security
crisis.”
More than 17 million people desperately
need food, including 6.8 million who are
“one step away from famine,” he said.
Man sentenced to 40 years
for killing journalist
MEXICO CITY (AP) — A court in
Guatemala has sentenced a man to 40 years
in prison for the 2016 killing of a television
journalist.
Byron Felipe Morales was sentenced
Tuesday for the killing. Other suspects in the
shooting remain at large.
Journalist Victor Hugo Valdez Cardona
was gunned down while walking with
East Oregonian
his grandson in the provincial city of
Chiquimula. Valdez Cardona was a
physician who worked as a TV host, and
prosecutors believe the killing was linked to
his work.
Guatemala, like neighboring Mexico, has
been plagued by the killing of journalists.
Ex-Gitmo inmate among six
detained from jihadi network
PARIS (AP) — A former Guantanamo
Bay inmate is among six people from an
alleged jihadi recruiting network linked to
the Islamic State group who were detained
on Tuesday, a French judicial source said.

Among the suspects arrested was Sabir
Mahfouz Lahmar, who was freed from
the U.S. detention center in Cuba in 2009
after France agreed to accept him, said
the official, who spoke on condition of
anonymity to discuss the case.
Lahmar was one of six Algerians detained
in Bosnia in 2001 on suspicion of plotting
to bomb the U.S. embassy in Sarajevo. The
Justice Department later backed off the
allegations, but held the men at Guantanamo
for years. Former French President Nicolas
Sarkozy agreed to take him in April 2009.
The French official said that there were
no indications the group was plotting an
attack.
