SCHOLARSHIPS
Swenson awarded Lindberg Scholarship
PENDLETON — Amy Swenson has been named the recip-
ient of the 2017 David Jon Lindberg Memorial Scholarship.
Swenson, a graduating Pendleton High School senior, intends
to use the $1,000 scholarship at Northwest
Nazarene University, where she plans to
major in pre-veterinary science.
Swenson is graduating with a 4.35
GPA and is a high honor roll student
who is involved in numerous school and
community activities, including FFA and
the National Honor Society. She is the
daughter of Arron and Lisa Swenson.
This is the 38th anniversary of the
scholarship, which honors the memory of
David Jon Lindberg. It was established by Swenson
the people of Pendleton as a tribute to him.
It is awarded each year to an outstanding Pendleton High School
graduate whose career embodies the standards Lindberg set:
commitment to citizenship, scholarship and family. The schol-
arship funds are managed by the Pendleton Foundation Trust.
Echo Kiwanis awards scholarships
Three local high school seniors and were chosen to receive
Echo Kiwanis Foundation Scholarships. This year’s Kiwanis
Club fundraising activities and local donations from Echo and
Stanfield communities provided the annual $500 scholarships.
Laci Wiggins of Echo is planning to pursue a degree in agri-
cultural business with a minor in equine sciences. She will attend
BMCC for two years, prior to transferring either to Oregon State
University or Montana State University. She is the Echo senior
class president and was a co-captain of this year’s basketball
team. Additionally, she ran cross country and participated in
trapshooting. She has been active in FFA throughout high school
and is the Echo FFA president this year. She also has been a
member of Oregon Trail Riders 4-H club since fourth grade and
is currently a teen leader. Her volunteer activities include Red to
Red Bike Race, Echo Kiwanis Octoberfest and more than 155
hours of roping chute work for the Farm City Pro Rodeo. Laci is
the daughter of Jennifer and Brett Kralman of Echo.
Ryan Bailey will graduate as valedictorian from Stanfield
this spring with an Associate of Arts degree from BMCC. He
plans to enroll in Eastern Oregon University this fall to pursue
an MBA degree with a minor in computer science. He is ASB
president this year, having served on student council since he
was a freshman, and is involved with National Honor Society
and FBLA. He has competed in football, basketball and base-
ball and was named MVP for last year’s state championship
team. His volunteer activities included sponsoring two Red
Cross blood drives, “Pennies for Patients” fundraising for
Lymphoma Foundation and the “Gift-A-Soldier” campaign
for overseas soldiers. Ryan is the son of Bryan and Jennifer
Bailey of Stanfield.
Hunter Barnes will graduate this spring with an Honors
Diploma and is planning to pursue a medical career at either
Eastern Texas Baptist University or Rocky Mountain College
in Montana. He has served on the ASB Executive Council
since 2014 and has been a member of the National Honor
Society since 2015. Hunter has been recognized as a scholar
athlete all four years of high school and has participated on
the football, baseball and sporting clay teams. His volunteer
activities include Red Cross blood drives, the “Gift-A-Soldier”
campaign for overseas soldiers and “Pennies for Patients” fund
raising for Lymphoma Foundation. Hunter is the son of Kent
and Lori Barnes.

Texas. Leon, Everett’s
father, died at the
early age of 35 and

Roy Grove. The
family moved from
Claude,
Texas,
to Oklahoma and
then on to settle
in Salem, Oregon,
around 1935.
Everett attended
Salem schools but
when the war broke
out he enlisted
into the Navy. He
led the recruiters
to believe he was
18, but in fact Bagwell
he was only 17
as he enlisted on
November 10, 1942. He
trained at Farragut, Idaho,
and he became a pharmacist
mate, taking care of wounds
and other ailments of his
Navy peers. He was honor-
ably discharged from the
Navy on June 14, 1946.
Everett
met
Ethel
Anderson in Portland,
Oregon, at Pacific Bible
College where they both
attended from Fall of 1945
to Spring of 1946. They
were married in North Bend,
Oregon, Ethel’s home, on
July 13,1946.
The Bagwells lived in
North Bend until 1951
when Everett took the
circulation
manager’s
position in Pendleton for
the East Oregonian. In
1961 he and Ethel bought
Sharn’s Soda Shop and
renamed it The Shorthorn
Cafe. It was located next
to The Longhorn Motel. In
1968 he became manager
of the Umatilla County
Federal Credit Union. He
remained there until his
retirement in 1988.
His favorite pastime and
hobby was fishing, any kind
of fishing in every kind of
boat and weather,
and spending time
with his grandchil-
dren and greats!!
He is survived
by his wife of 70
wonderful years,

nephews and a niece. He
was preceded by his parents,

MONDAY
10:31 a.m. - A man asked Pendleton police to take action on his
niece for allowing people to live in the motor home behind a building
on Southeast Byers Avenue. Police decided that was a civil matter.
12:27 p.m. - A caller on Southeast 19th Street, Pendleton, told
police the neighbors park their non-working vehicles in the way on a
cul-de-sac. Police tagged one vehicle with a notice for towing.
2:03 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office took a report of
theft at Cel Pril Industries Inc., 1795 N.W. Geer Road, Hermiston.
2:04 p.m. - The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office received a
request to have a deputy check on the welfare of a couple visiting
property in the county. The caller said she last saw heard from her
relatives Friday in Heppner, and while they were not planning on
returning home until later this week, she heard nothing from them
all weekend, including on Mother’s Day.
2:46 p.m. - Staff at Echo High School, 600 Gerone St., Echo,
reported vandalism to the school.
3:11 p.m. - A Pendleton woman told police she was a victim of a
scam via Western Union and was out $272.

after suffering a
heart attack.
Jack was born
in Walla Walla on
February 23, 1929,
to John Lewis
and Rose Keith
Richartz. He was
raised in College
Place, where his
folks
lived
at
Martin Field in the
old “road house”
until 1939 when
they moved to the
ranch in Umapine. Richartz
His family raised
turkeys and sugar
beets. Jack graduated from
Umapine High in 1946, then
attended OSU. He returned
home to take over the farm
from his dad.
He was recruited by the
Army and served two years
in the Korean campaign.
Afterwards he returned home
and started his commercial
cattle operation, along with
raising hay and wheat. In
1957 he met a student nurse,
who was working with her
class from Spokane at the
Walla Walla VA. After a
rather long courtship, he and
Helen Janke were married in
1964. The couple raised two
boys, who have now taken
over the operation.
Jack enjoyed horses ever
since his mother set him on
their old work horse that was
used as a babysitter, while his
parents worked on the ranch.
He quit riding a couple years
ago, due to his Parkinson’s.
He also enjoyed going to
the mountains, looking after
cows and building fence,
hunting and wild horse racing
at the Walla Walla rodeo and
Pendleton Round-Up. He
was interested in braiding
reins, old tractors, gardening,
