May 17, 1917
Flag poles are to be raised in the immediate
future on Court street at every intersection
from Main to Vincent. Authority was given
last evening by the council after a petition
signed by practically every business man on
Court street had been presented. Flags will
be flown from the top of each pole day and
night. Spot lights will be installed in order that
the flags may be seen at night. The poles will
be place in the center of the intersections and
will thus serve as dummy policemen also. The
Court street business men will defray expenses
and the P.P & L. Co. will furnish the light.

May 17, 1967
Condition of Joan Burcham, Lexington,
remains critical. The Heppner High School
student was injured in an auto accident early
Saturday in which Michael Downing and Paul
Swaggart were killed. She has not regained
consciousness and is suffering from a severe
concussion, a broken collar bone, broken
back and broken pelvis. She was moved
from Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner
Saturday to Good Samaritan in Portland for
specialized treatment.

May 17, 1992
Young fishermen from the Umatilla Indian
Reservation have decided not to catch and
haul adult spring chinook salmon to the upper
Grande Ronde River today following a direc-
tive issued Friday from the tribal government.
A contingent of fishermen had planned to
catch and transport the fish as a protest to the
state’s new hatchery policies and reluctance to
put fish back into the habitat where they have
been lost. The change in plans also comes on
the heels of an announcement Thursday by
the Nez Perce tribal executive committee that
opened weekend fishing seasons for limited
stretches of Oregon’s Lookingglass Creek and
Idaho’s Rapid River.
