Pendleton Cattle Barons Weekend celebrates 10th year
By TAMMY MALGESINI
East Oregonian
Created to celebrate the
region’s western heritage,
Pendleton Cattle Barons
Weekend is marking its
10th anniversary Friday
and Saturday in and around
the Pendleton Convention
Center.
In addition to highlighting
ranching, rodeo and the
western lifestyle, Cattle
Barons is committed to
assisting students pursuing
higher education in the field
of agriculture. A nonprofit
organization, Cattle Barons
has provided more than
$50,000 to about 50 students
from Umatilla and Morrow
counties.
“Our efforts for the
weekend are dedicated to
supporting students through
scholarships,” said Andy
Vanderplaat, Cattle Barons
board president.

Challenge at the 2016 Pendleton Cattle Barons Weekend.
The weekend features a
horse and working dog sale,
Ranch Rodeo Championship
(Friday, 7 p.m.,) North Amer-
ican Stock Saddle Bronc
Championships (Saturday, 7
p.m.), specialty artwork and
western craftsmanship, and
some of the best backyard
grillers around. All events are
free, except the ranch rodeo
($10) and the saddle bronc
($15). A combo ticket is $22.
Tickets are $5 for each event
for kids ages 5-12.
After experimenting with
a Dutch oven cook-off and
chili contest the first couple
of years, organizers of the
Buckaroo BBQ Challenge
found their niche during
the event, said Ryan Heath.
Returning for the eighth year,
backyard grillers will vie for
bragging rights, cash and
prizes. In addition, people
are invited to buy a button
for $5 to become an official
judge for the people’s choice
award.
Heath encourages people
to follow their nose as the
aroma of tri-tip and ribs will
fill the air Saturday as nearly
two dozen teams square off
in the contest. Cooks will
get things fired up around
11 a.m. and the meat will
be ready for tasting around
1 p.m. Heath said there are
still some open slots for
teams to enter the contest.
For more information, stop
by the Pendleton Chamber
of Commerce or visit www.
cattlebarons.net.
Missy Fairbanks, chair-
woman for the barbecue
contest, decided to include a
special division for younger
grillers. The Young Guns
