TENNIS: Hermiston girls get confidence boost going into districts
Continued from 1B
was awful. It was starting to
make me tired toward the end
of the second set, but you’ve
just got to push through it if
you want the W.”
After a short break and
wet towel to wipe his face,
Johnson came back and won
the next two games.
“I definitely needed to
take a break after he got two
on me in row,” Johnson said.
“It went a lot better than last
time, last time I had to go to
a tiebreaker with him and
I won, so it was definitely
an improvement. I’ve been
practicing my serve a lot, so
I didn’t double fault as many
times as I did last time.”
At No. 1 doubles Herm-
iston’s Thomas McCullough
and Patrick Wicks took care
of business against a new
Buckaroo pairing of Easton
Phelan and Joey Savage with
a 6-3, 6-1 win. Koby Grigg
and Matt Eckhardt also beat
a new team, Jeremy Sellers
and Josh Mendoza, at No. 2
doubles 6-3, 6-3.
“I mixed doubles around
a little today trying some
teams we haven’t had before,
always looking for that magic
combination,” said Pend-
leton coach Chris Holdman.
“They won some games, and
so it was competitive. A good
showing for us.”
Hayden Cissna picked
up Hermiston’s singles win
by outlasting Silas Johnston
6-2, 6-3. The match featured
several long rallies, and
lasted just longer than the No.
1 match on the adjacent court.
“Oh goodness the heat
was horrible,” Cissna said
afterward. “The heat was so
bad just because I’m not used
to it yet because it goes from
spring to summer so quick. It
just gets so hot.”
Cissna seemed to get
more aggressive as the match
went, though, and said that
was because Johnston was
playing pretty conservatively.
“When it first starts I take
it a little slow and measure
how good he is, how hard
he’s going to hit it, and how
he’s going to set me up for
good shots,” he said. “And
then I start to hit it hard if
he’s giving me a little bit
of room. … (The season) is
definitely going good, I mean
a lot better than last year. I’m
always seeing improvement.
“I mean, I used to just
survive as I was playing but
now I’m actually starting to

attack.”
Despite Pendleton’s loss,
Holdman said he was happy
to see each match competitive
with the district tournament
coming up on May 12-13.
“Anytime that we can
tie Hermiston 3-3 in match
scores is good for us,” he
said. “It’s been a while since
we did that, so that was a
good outing for us. All the
kids played really well.”

GIRLS TENNIS
HERMISTON 7, PEND-
LETON 1 — At Hermiston,
the Bulldogs girls tennis team
heads into districts on a high
note after beating Pendleton
soundly, 7-1 on Wednesday
afternoon.
Hermiston coach Jason
Sivey said that it was the type
of performance he had been
waiting to see from his team and
the type that his team needed as
they march toward districts.
“It gives us a big boost of
confidence coming off two
tough weekends of tennis up
at Capital (WA) and Bend,”
he said. “It was a good win to
get, for sure.”
Hermiston’s only loss of
the day came at No. 1 singles
when Pendleton’s Jenna
Senter took down Mackenzie
Hill 6-3 and 6-1. But from
that point on, Hermiston did
not drop a set in any of the
final seven matches.
“We just came out more
passionate and fired up,” he
said. “We came out strong and
just played well all around.”
Sivey pointed out the
No. 2 doubles team of Reed
Middleton and Breena Wadeka-
mper as a match that stood
out to him. The Bulldog duo
breezed past Pendleton’s Danae
Smith and Gabby Cuthbert 6-0
and 6-0 to claim the victory.
“They both came out
real strong today which was
exciting to see,” Sivey said.
UP NEXT
Pendleton will wrap up
its regular season by hosting
Hood River on Monday at 4
p.m. Hermiston will prepare
for the district tournament at
Sunriver resort next week.

MARIOTA: Made one catch for 11 yards in Oregon’s spring game
Continued from 1B
Center on campus.
In his second pro season,
Marcus ranked 10th in the
NFL with a 95.6 passer
rating, third-best in fran-
chise history. He threw 26
touchdowns with only nine
interceptions, and his 3,426
yards passing were the most
for this team since 2011.
“I hung out with my
brother at Oregon,” he told
reporters in Tennessee a
couple of weeks ago. “I’d
go in every day to get some
treatment and do little things
that hopefully would help me
through my process. But for
the most part I kind of just
took some time away from
the game, reflected a bit and
enjoyed some family time.”
The most decorated player
in Oregon’s history, Marcus
set school records with more
than 10,700 passing yards
and 135 total touchdowns,
including 105 passing, 29
rushing and two receiving.
He rushed for more than
2,200 yards over his Oregon
career, which ended early
when he decided to go pro.
He was the second-overall
pick in the 2015 NFL draft.
Matt followed his older
brother’s footsteps to Eugene
and in the upcoming season
he’ll be a redshirt sophomore
shifting from linebacker to
tight end. He’ll help shore up a
position that saw the departure
of Pharaoh Brown, Johnny
Mundt and Evan Baylis.
So, no, he’s not a quar-
terback. Marcus’ records at
Oregon are safe.
“Obviously, my brother,
it’s a huge offensive influ-
ence,” Matt said about the
switch. “Watching him
throughout the years, I kind
of pick up on the offense,
I pick up on different stuff.
I think it was just easy for
me to come over. And it was
something I wanted to do.”
Matt has just wrapped
up spring practices. He had
a reception for 11 yards in
the annual spring game on
Saturday, which earned him a
loud ovation from the nearly
37,000 fans at Autzen Stadium.
“To be honest, I didn’t even
hear it,” Matt said. “I was just
locked in and when I get off
the field my teammates and
everybody was like, ‘Every-
body’s cheering for you’ and I
was like, ‘Well, I didn’t really
hear it.’ I guess I’ll have to go
and watch it on TV because
my parents recorded it.”
Like his older brother, Matt
Mariota hails from Hawaii and
was a walk-on for the Ducks
when he arrived in 2015.
Matt and the Ducks are
embarking on their first
season under coach Willie
Taggart,
who
replaced
Mark Helfrich after Oregon
finished 4-8 overall last
season and 2-7 in the Pac-12.
“I think we’re all bonding
a lot more. It’s like a family
atmosphere” Matt said. “We
never used to really hang
out but now it’s like all the
kids want to hang out, they
want to do stuff together. It’s
really, really nice.”
Before the spring game,
the Marcus Mariota Sports
Performance Center was
given a traditional Hawaiian
blessing. Older brother
Marcus was there, tearing up
after the ceremony.
The younger Mariota was
reminded that Marcus always
called him the better athlete.
“He knows who’s the real
athlete,” Matt joked with a
smile.
