RENTON, Wash. — The
Seattle Seahawks focused
on the line of scrimmage in
selecting defensive lineman
Malik McDowell and offen-
sive lineman Ethan Pocic
with a pair of second-round
picks in Friday’s NFL draft.
Both
selections
fill
obvious needs for the
Seahawks, but their positions
in the NFL are still to be
determined. McDowell was
primarily a defensive tackle
at Michigan State but may
project more as a defensive
end, while Pocic played
center last season for LSU
but played across the entire
offensive line during his time
in college.
Whatever positions they
end up playing, the players
help address needs for the
Seahawks, who had four
picks remaining in the third
round.

and athleticism seemed to
have him pegged for the first
round. But knocks about
inconsistency and taking
plays off seemed to ding
McDowell as he dropped out
of the first day. Seattle was
more than willing to wait.
The Seahawks even pulled
off yet another trade — their
third of the draft — to move
Prep Roundup
back one spot and allow
Jacksonville to move up
while giving Seattle another
sixth-round pick.
It’s the second straight
year Seattle used a second-
round pick on a defensive
tackle and third straight
year the Seahawks have
drafted a defensive lineman
in the second round. Last
year, the Seahawks grabbed
run-stuffing tackle Jarran
Reed from Alabama in the
second round. A year earlier,
it was defensive end Frank
Clark.
This time it was
McDowell.
Seattle’s defense — espe-
cially the defensive line — is
beginning to age. Michael
Bennett and Cliff Avril
are 31. Ahtyba Rubin will
also be 31 when the season
begins. McDowell will
join Reed, Frank Clark and
Quinton Jefferson as players
drafted by Seattle in the past
three years in an effort to get
younger.
Pocic started at center and
guard during his career at
LSU, but his size would allow
him to transition to tackle if
that’s where the Seahawks
think he fits best. Seattle’s
offensive line was an obvious
weakness last season and that
was somewhat addressed in
free agency by the signings
of Luke Joeckel and Oday
Aboushi.

ENTERPRISE — The
Stanfield baseball team
extended its winning streak
to 16 straight games with
a sweep over the Wallowa
County co-op of Enterprise/
Joseph/Wallowa
in
an
Eastern Oregon League
doubleheader on Friday.
Brody Woods pitched the
Tigers’ fourth no-hitter of the
season with 10 strikeouts and
only a single walk to pick up
the five-inning win 12-0 in
the opener. Then Tony Flores
gave them another strong start
to win the second game 6-1.
In Game 1, Woods batted
2 for 3 with three RBI, Dylan
Grogan was 2 for 4 with two
doubles and scored three
runs, and Ryan Bailey was 3
for 4 with two RBI to lead the
offense for Stanfield (16-1,
10-0 EOL).
In Game 2, Tony Flores
took the ball and pitched the
first six innings and struck
out nine batters before Ryan
Bailey came on to throw
the last inning and get two
strikeouts.
Dylan Grogan was 3 for 4
with two RBI, and Monkus
went 2 for 4 and scored twice.

IRRIGON 17-5, VALE
3-7 — At Irrigon, the
Knights unloaded for 16
runs in the fourth inning to
win in runaway style 17-3
in their first game against
Vale on Friday, but couldn’t
get that run production to
carry over into the second
game and fell 7-5 to split
the Eastern Oregon League
doubleheader.
In Game 1, Austin Rice
allowed just two hits in 4
1/3 inning on the mound,
and Tanner Mills struck out
the final two batters to lead
Irrigon (14-3, 7-3 EOL) in a
five-inning win.
Mills was also a standout
at the plate going 3 for 4 with
two RBI, and the Knights
were paced by Adrian Roa’s
3 for 3 with three RBI and
three runs.
Rice also hit three RBI,
and two each were added by
Zack Henrichs and Johnny
Phillips.
In Game 2, Mills was the
only Knight with multiple
hits going 2 for 4 as Vale (7-8,
5-4) starting pitcher Dawson
Eddy went the distance and
finished with one earned
run allowed on seven hits
with three strikeouts and no
walks. He also batted 2 for 4
to lead the Vikings.

IRRIGON 3-11 — At
Boardman, the Pirates and
Knights split their Special
District 1 doubleheader
on Friday with Riverside
winning the first game 13-3
in six innings and Irrigon
bouncing back to take the
second 11-6.
In Game 1, Sadie Hasbell
went 4 for 4 with a home run
and three doubles to drive
in seven runs for the Pirates
(14-6, 4-4 SD1). Hernandez
(3 for 3), Villegas (2 for 4)
and Skylar Wightman all
scored three runs. Wightman
struck out 10 and walked
none in a complete effort in
the circle to get the win.
Irrigon (12-8, 4-4) was led
at the plate by Mya Chapman
who went 2 for 3 with two
RBI, and Casandra Fleming
was 2 for 3.
In Game 2, Brittni
Mendoza’s 3 for 4 led Irri-
gon’s 13-hit production on
offense and Riverside made
six errors to hurt their own
cause.
Bailey Botefuhr (2 for 4)
drove in a pair of runs, and
Chapman pitched the entire
way allowing just three
earned runs on eight hits with
three strikeouts.
Wightman got the loss in
another complete effort, and
went 2 for 3 at the plate while
Hasbell hit her fourth double
of the day.

Riverside is at Umatilla
on Tuesday for a single game
at 4 p.m.
Irrigon’s next game is
Friday in a home double-
header against Weston-
McEwen starting at 1 p.m.

came on strong at the plate
driving in three runs in a 2
for 5 game, and freshman
Kaeleh Hall gave the team a

for his fourth save. He struck
out Edwin Encarnacion with
a runner on to end the eighth
and pitched a perfect ninth.
Carlos Carrasco (2-2)
gave up both home runs and
struck out seven in eight

Miranda walked two in
the first and pitched around
a two-out fielding error by
third baseman Kyle Seager
in the second. Ramirez’s
long fly toward the
bleachers in the fourth was
ruled a double, but the call
was reversed after a review.
Carrasco retired nine in a
row after allowing a double
to start the game. Gamel led
off the fourth with a double
and Cano homered to center.
Cano is batting .411 (7 for
17) with two homers and six
RBIs in his career against
the right-hander.
The Indians, who had
won seven of nine, managed
only four hits. Francisco
Lindor singled in the sixth,
but James Pazos struck out
Encarnacion and Ramirez.

At Umatilla, the TigerScots
are on a season-long five-
game winning streak after a
pair of five-inning Special
District 1 wins over Umatilla
on Friday.
Bailey Hillmick struck out
11 from the circle in Game 1,
and Jordyn Lambert returned
after dealing with some arm
soreness to strike out nine in
Game 2 to get the wins for
Weston-McEwen (10-4, 7-0
SD1).
Weston-McEwen coach
Jeff Griggs said he was
pleased to see the team
successfully convert several
squeeze plays, as they looked
to work on the situation
should they need it later in
the year.
It wasn’t all small ball,
though, and Lambert, Sydney
Peal and Courtney Cain all
hit home runs in the first
game and Lambert batted 7
for 10 on the day.
