Robert J. “Bob” Picthall
of Umatilla, Ore., formerly
of Boardman, was born on
April 3, 1929, in Aurora,
Nebraska, to parents
George and Beulah
Wells Picthall. He
died on April 22,
2017, in Hermiston,
Oregon, at the age
of 88 years.
Bob was raised
and
attended
schools in Grand
Island, Nebraska,
graduating in 1947.
He enlisted in the
United States Army
in 1948 and served
42 months overseas
before his honor-
able discharge.
Picthall
Bob
married
Lillie Ann James
on August 2, 1952, in Grand
Island, Nebraska. He returned
to work for O.P. Skaggs, a
grocery store he had worked
at during high school. Bob
attended the University of
Nebraska at Lincoln until
1955 and went to work for
Swift & Company in Omaha,
Neb.
He later moved his family
to the Pacific Northwest in
Portland, Oregon, in 1965
to work for Fred Meyer.
He quickly worked his way
up into management. Bob
managed the Raleigh Hills,
Oak Grove and then the
Rockwood store. He was
then promoted to Toy and
Household Sundry Buyer.
This position sent him to
the Orient many times to
search for and buy products.
Several times he was able to
have Lillie travel with him to
the Orient, which she really
enjoyed.
In 1981 Bob
left Fred Meyer to
purchase a toy store
in Mall 205. They
owned and operated
the
successful
toy business until
retiring in 1985.
Bob and Lillie spent
the next five years
full time RVing
before settling in
Boardman, Oregon,
in 1991 to enjoy a
slower pace of life.
He enjoyed fishing
in the Columbia
River and was
an accomplished
gardener with a
beautiful yard.
He is survived by
his
daughter,
Sharon;
sons Rolland and Robert
Jr.; a brother, Gary; six
grandchildren; and several
great-grandchildren, nieces
and nephews.
Bob was preceded in
death by his wife, his parents
and two brothers, Kenneth
and George Jr.
A graveside service with
military honors will be held
on Saturday, April 29, 2017,
at 1:00 p.m. at the Herm-
iston Cemetery, Hermiston,
Oregon.

Frank L. Adams passed
away at St. Anthony Hospital
Saturday, April 22, 2017.
Frank was 86 years old. He
was born on December 7,
1930, in Heppner,
Ore., to parents
Joseph and Ida Mae
(Warren) Adams.
Frank was raised
in Hardman, Ore.,
with two brothers
and three sisters. He
attended Hardman
Elementary School
until seventh grade
when his family
then moved to
Heppner.
Frank joined the
United States Navy
where he served Adams
as an aviation
machinist on an
aircraft carrier for four years
from 1947-1951. He returned
to Heppner after his honor-
able discharge where he met
and married Fern Biddle in
1953. Upon their marriage,
the couple relocated to Pend-
leton, Ore.
Prior to owning Western
Glove, where he served
cities in Eastern Oregon for
20 years, he was a longtime
employee for Firestone
where he got to know many

Margaret Doane Sloan
was born February 22,
1927, in Weston, Oregon, to
William Thomas Doane and
Margaret Rachael Thomas
(Doane).
At the young age
of five, she moved
to Kentucky with
her family where
she lived until she
was grown. She
moved back to
Oregon as a young
adult where she met
her spouse at a barn
dance. She married
James E. (Jim) Sloan
Sloan on Nov. 10,
1948. Together they have
raised eight children.
She is survived by her
husband Jim and seven of her
eight children: Joyce Hale,
Judy Coffman, Becky Largo,
James Sloan Jr. (Lana), Amy
Anderton (George), Tom
Sloan (Leneile) and Tami
Dreger (Rhett). She is also
survived by 21 of her 24
grandchildren, and numerous
great-grandchildren
and
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her parents, her eight
siblings, her son John Sloan,
her granddaughters Misty
Largo and Melissa Haney,
and her grandson Jim Haney.
After a long battle
with Alzheimer’s disease,
Margaret passed away peace-
fully in her home surrounded
by loved ones on April 24,
2017. She loved her home

spent a year as a
prestigious Teacher
in Residence.
Donna devoted
a great deal of
energy to curric-
ulum writing as
well,
actively
involving herself in all levels
of program development.
Notably, Donna acted for a
time as a science curriculum
writer for the Oregon Public
Broadcasting International
Teacher Training Institute.
Donna was preceded in
death by her son Sean, her
father, and her grandparents.
Her immense love is survived
by her husband Barry Ball
of Portland, Oregon; her son
Lanny Ball and wife Briana
of Bantam, Connecticut;
and her absolutely adored
granddaughters Livingston
Riley, Alexandra Grace, and
Iris Kelly.
Others include her mother
Helen Callaway who resides
in Athena, Oregon; sisters
Linda Callaway Reeves and
husband Fred of Vancouver,
Washington, and Peg Call-
away and husband Chris
Culp of Omak, Washington;
nephew Jason Harrison and
son Huck of Walla Walla,
Washington;
niece
Dr.
Ashley Rice and husband
Matt of Milton-Freewater,
Oregon; aunt Ruth Robinson
of Wenatchee, Washington;
cousin Brenda Burgett, her
lifelong cousin and friend; as
well as countless others.
Donna’s awards were many
but were never her focus, as she
patterned her life and her career
working tirelessly to make
learning fun and helping others
reach their potential both in and
out of the classroom. Away
from teaching, Donna loved to
sing, sew, quilt, make things,
travel, read, sing, swim, and
keep in close touch with those
she loved.
Donna exuded a true zest
for life. She was an amazingly
loving and supportive wife
and phenomenally devoted
mother and grandmother
(“Tutu”). A wonderfully
engaging person and lifelong
learner, Donna brought life
to everyone around her. She
welcomed a diverse group
of friends, all of whom loved
her and will miss her dearly.
In lieu of flowers a memo-
rial fund has been established
supporting Donna’s passion
for helping others reach their
educational goals. Donations

the home and farm a pleasant
place where family and
friends always knew they
were welcome.
Some of her
hobbies
included
baking and quilting
for others. She
loved children and
always wanted them
around so she could
hear their cheerful
chatter and enjoy
their antics. Together
with her husband,
Jim, they not only
brought up their
own children, but also nieces,
nephews, grandchildren, and
many foster children and
proctor youth.
She was a faithful member
of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints. She
gave many years of service to
the Primary, Young Women,
and Relief Society organiza-
tions. She was dearly loved
by all who knew her. We will
miss her kind, gentle ways
and her happy smile.
Viewing will be held
Saturday, April 29 at 10 a.m.
followed by funeral services at
11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints in
Pendleton. Dedication of the
grave will follow the services
at the Pilot Rock Cemetery.

Donna Rae Callaway Ball
passed away April 21, 2017,
at Mt. Hood Medical Center
in Gresham, Oregon. She was
74 years old.
On November
21, 1942, Donna
was born in St. Paul,
Arkansas, to parents
Helen Abner Call-
away and Connie
Callaway.
Her
paternal grandpar-
ents were George
and Ella Callaway,
and her maternal
grandparents were
Fred and Cora Ball
Abner.
After attending elementary
school in St. Paul, Donna later
settled in Athena, Oregon,
at the beginning of her fifth
grade year. While in Athena,
she attended school and grad-
uated from McEwen High
School in 1960. Following
graduation, Donna attended
Northwest Christian College
for one year before transfer-
ring to Oregon College of
Education. Donna ultimately
received a bachelor’s degree
in education from the Univer-
sity of Oregon in 1964.
In August of 1963, Donna
married Barry Noel Ball. The
two had met two years
prior at Northwest Christian
College. After graduation,
Donna and Barry moved
to Enid, Oklahoma, where
Donna began a teaching career
while her husband attended
Phillips University Graduate
School. While in Enid, Donna
also completed her master’s
degree, and in March 1968,
their first son Barry Landon
(“Lanny”) was born.
After finishing their
degrees, Donna and Barry
moved back to Oregon
briefly; but then it was on to
Modesto, California, where
their second son, Sean Kelly,
was born. From Modesto
the family moved again and,
after spending a short time in
Burley, Idaho, permanently
settled in the Portland area.
During her life, Donna
became
an
extremely
accomplished and beloved
educator.
She
taught
numerous grade levels,
including kindergarten, grade
school, and middle school. In
addition to K-8 teaching,
Donna’s career also included
a parallel and illustrious 43
years of service at Mt. Hood
Community College, where
she earned the great respect
of both students and faculty,
receiving the “Distinguished
Teacher Award.” Donna also
served as adjunct professor
for Portland State University,
Lewis and Clark College, and
Boise State University.
For her incredible dedi-
cation and superior teaching
abilities, Donna received
countless awards, certificates,
and recognition, including
the Oregon Educational
Association Award of Excel-
lence. Her work included

18-wheeler.
Frank enjoyed
being a member of
the BPOE for 57
years. He was also
a member of the
Veterans of Foreign
Wars and the Pend-
leton Drum and
Bugle Corps, where
he proudly played
his bugle.
Frank
loved
the game of golf,
and his weekly
golfing trips with
his buddies to Echo
Golf Course where
he was a longtime
member.
Frank is survived by his
wife Fern of 64 years; his
daughter Teresa Stebbins
and son Don Adams, both of
Portland, Ore.; grandchildren
Sean Stebbins and Kaitlin
Connelly of Portland, Ore.;
and numerous nieces and
nephews.
There will be a celebration
of life at a later date. Burns
Mortuary of Pendleton is in
charge of arrangements.
