Because he spoke disparagingly of the
United States army, a transient who claims to
have served in the army is a prisoner in the
city jail awaiting action of the authorities. The
incident which led to the arrest occurred in a
local pool hall. Corporal Harvey was telling
about the army to a number of prospective
recruits when McGunes butted in to the
conversation to belittle the army. His remarks
are said to have been intended as a discour-
agement to those contemplating enlisting.
Corporal Harvey ordered him to keep quiet
and upon his refusal stepped out and called
Officer Hall who took the man to the police
station. McGunes is indignant at his arrest.
He declares he has served in the army himself
and his remarks were prompted by his own
experience as a soldier.

Charles Cline, Heppner, lucky logger who
escaped death when his cab was crushed in on
him Friday, was back logging in a new truck
Tuesday. Cline, who operates under contract
to Crip Logging, was returning to Heppner
Friday morning about 8 with a load of logs
when the chain holding the cable broke on
a curve about 7 miles south of Heppner on
Willow Creek Road. The load shifted to the
rear and slipped off the truck, tipping the
truck over. It came to rest about 10 feet off the
road. The cab was completely crushed. Cline
was pinned in the seat with his boot caught
between the door and the seat for about 40
minutes before Oris Crip, owner of Crip
Logging, came on the scene. Crip managed
to knock in the back of the cab, cut the boot
loose from the trapped man and release him.
Cline suffered only a badly bruised leg, head
bumps and a cut on the back.

U.S. Army Private First Class Delbert
Whitmore has been decorated for his conduct
under fire while serving in the Army in
combat. Whitmore is 74. The Milton-Free-
water resident waited nearly 50 years to
find out he’d been awarded two bronze stars
during World War II. The retired school
custodian learned of the awards recently
when he received a package in the mail from
the Department of the Army in St. Louis, Mo.
The package contained a certificate for the
bronze star awards, and paperwork indicating
which medals he had earned: The Republic
of the Philippines Presidential Unit Citation
Badge, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal
and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon, the
latter two being bronze star awards.
