Alonso, Plouffe homer to beat Mariners

— Blue Mountain Community
College’s men’s and women’s
rodeo teams continue to domi-
nate the Northwest Region
standings following a successful
weekend at the Northwest
Regional Nos. 3 and 4 rodeos in
Milton-Freewater April 14-15.
The women’s team won both

Regional 3. He also notched
the top spots that day in saddle
bronc riding and bareback
riding, which he also won on
April 15.
At Northwest Regional 3,
Williams also landed in first in
barrel racing, while Layva and
Pendergrass took home the top
two spots, respectively, in goat
tying, and Kaylee Aldrich came
in first in breakaway roping.
At Northwest Regional 4 on
April 15, Chaise Robbins and
Cole White topped the leader-
board in team roping — header
and healer, respectively — while
Pendergrass, Williams, Jessica
Lewis and Tiffanee Lewis took
home the top four places in
barrel racing.
Both teams remain No. 1
in the Northwest Region of
the National Intercollegiate
Rodeo Association, with the
men 708 points ahead of
second-place Walla Walla
Community College, and the
women 2,801.38 points ahead
of second-place Treasure Valley
Community College.
Williams also leads the region
in the women’s all-around,
while Espeland leads the region
in bareback riding. Williams,
Lewis and Pendergrass also
are the leaders in barrel racing,
in that order, while Aldrich,
Williams and Leyva lead the
pack in breakaway roping.
The BMCC women’s team,
which is the reigning two-time
national champion, sits in fifth
place in the national rankings.

beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 on
Friday night.

went out there with the mindset
that it was just another game I
think. That’s really why I played
so well.
“When we went to nationals
it was crazy how many people
were there supporting us. It was
amazing. … When I came back (to
Hermiston) and so many people
were telling me they watched the
game, you don’t realize how many
people actually support you.”
She said one of the reasons
she chose the Warriors was their
winning ways under coach Brian
Orr, but she was still in awe of
the team’s accomplishment even
weeks after the season ended.
“Thirty-five and two in a
season, not many people can say
that. Most wins for a season this
year. It’s going to be hard not to
compare back to such a great
season, and being your first year,”
she said. “But it’s going to be
different, it’s going to be a new
team.
“You know, a national cham-
pionship is pretty huge. It would
be awesome if we got there again,
away from home.
Manaea battled control issues for
the second straight game and had
to pitch out of jams in the second
and sixth to earn his first win of
the season. The left-hander pitched
five hitless innings in his last start
against Houston on April 15.
Three relievers completed the
six-hitter. Santiago Casilla retired
three batters for his third save.
Iwakuma allowed three runs
over 5 1/3 innings with four walks
and three strikeouts.

Buckaroos were a pair of tiebreak
sets away from getting the sweep on
Friday in a non-league match.
Easton Phelan earned Pendle-
ton’s only win in singles 6-0, 6-4
over Roberto Bianco in the No. 3
slot, and the Bucks dropped the
other two in tiebreakers.
Peter Wallace and Jeremy
Sellers blanked Nick Duverny and
Kaleb Meyer at No. 1 doubles, and
Joey Savage and Elton Harrison
prevailed with a 10-8 tiebreak in the
second set.

HERMISTON 3 — At Bend,
Mackenzie Hill pulled out a
tiebreaker win at No. 1 singles
and Hermiston earned two wins in
doubles play during their non-league
loss to Sherwood on Friday.
Hill beat Analisa Dufrore 6-2
in the first set before falling 4-6 in
the second. She bounced back for a
dominant 10-2 win in the tiebreak,
though.

so much progress. We will have
a bunch of people returning but
we’re going to miss four starters so
that’s going to be a little bumpy.”
There will be room for
Edmiston to carve out a larger role
for herself as a sophomore. She’ll
be one of four returning guards, of
which she was behind just junior
Lauren Johnson for playing time.
Edmiston said she’s eager to
make the most of the opportunity
and has been working hard to
improve her jump shot and
defense, as well as hitting the
weight room with regularity while
also finding time to earn a 4.0 GPA
her first semester.
“I think I’ve just gotten a lot
stronger than in high school,” she
said. “My defense is definitely
going to be better for next year.”
After a year as an understudy,
Edmiston is also ready to resume
a familiar role.
“We’re going to need people
to step up and I’m going to try to
be that person to step up because
I’ve done it before and so that’s
something I feel comfortable
with,” she said. “I’m going to try
to be a leader.”

and Abby Ramer, and Hermiston’s
other win was at No. 4 doubles by
Kaeli Hamilton and Alyssa Perkins.

REDMOND — Pendleton
senior Nathan Som finished in a
four-way tie for sixth place with a
three-over par 75
on Friday at the Raven Rumble
in the Desert held at Eagle Crest
Resort in Redmond.
Three players broke par with
Summit’s Eric Wasserman winning
by one stroke over Ridgeview’s
Isaac Beurger and Jesuit’s Sumir
Dutta with a 70.
Hermiston’s top placer was Jared
Thacker with an 84 that was tied for
24th.
The round was a preview for the
district championships, and Pend-
leton senior Brayden Pulver said
a combination of being unfamiliar
with the course and inconsistent
play led to some higher scores for
the Buckaroos than in recent rounds.
“It’s a course that seems straight-
forward, but it’s easy to get into
trouble if you’re not playing well,”
said Pulver, who shot 93.
Pendleton scored 365 as a team
to place eighth Jared Geier shot 92,
Brandon Cox shot 105, and Seth
Wood had 107.
Hermiston was seventh with
356. Completing their scores were
Kaden Mecham with 85, Aaron
Lind with 91, Tyler Cameron with
96 and Garrett McCannehan with
103.
Jesuit won the team title with
292, Summit was second with 302
and The Dalles was third with 327.

UMATILLA — Nixyaawii’s
Riley Lankford and Echo’s Kyle
Ranger finished second and third,
respectively, at Big River Golf
Course on Friday.
Lankford shot an 84 and Ranger
had an 85, and Imbler’s Cade
Gorham won the boys title with a
76. Echo’s Ian Kalkner was fourth
with 87, and Nixyaawii’s James
Penney was fifth win 88.
Nixyaawii won the boys team
title with 377, Hermiston JV was
second with 383, and Echo was
third with 395.
Hermiston JV had the only full
girls team and their Amber Treat
was girl’s medalist for the round
with 93. Nixyaawii’s Susie Patrick
was second with 95 and Hermis-
ton’s Leslie Browning was third
with 99.
SOFTBALL
HEPPNER 19-23, CULVER
3-3 — At Culver, the Mustangs took
nine players to Culver for a lopsided
Special District 6 sweep on Friday.
Jenna McCullough batted 6 for 9
on the day to lead Heppner (2-4, 8-8
SD6) and hit three RBI in Game 2.
Cami VanArsdale also hit three RBI
in that 21-hit performance by the
Mustangs, and went 3 for 5.
Taylor Hamby drove in seven
runs total, and Morgan Orem went
5 for 10 with five RBI. Dakota
Durfey earned both wins pitching
the first four innings of each game
and allowing just two runs total.

MAC-HI 10-4, BAKER 0-2 —
At Baker City, the Mac-Hi Pioneers
improved to 6-0 in Greater Oregon
League play as they thumped Baker
10-0 in Game 1 and then held off a
late Bulldog surge in Game 2 with
a 4-2 victory on Thursday evening.
Mallory Copeland pitched both
games for the Pioneers and the
senior right-hander is finding a
groove. Copeland pitched a one-hit
shutout with seven strikeouts to start
the day and allowed just two runs in
Game 2 with six strikeouts. She did
not walk a single batter, either.
Game 2 was nothing short of a
battle for Mac-Hi, as the Pioneers
trailed 1-0 until the fifth inning
when they finally got on the score-
board. Mac-Hi first scored in the
fifth on a Baker error and an RBI
groundout by Rachael Lyon to give
the Pioneers a 2-1 lead. They then
made it a 4-1 game in the sixth on
an RBI double by Micha Fortune
and a sacrifice fly by Lyon.
Baker made things interesting in
the bottom of the seventh, getting
the tying runs on and the go-ahead
run at the plate with two outs. A
single to center field brought one
run home, but that was all as Ashlyn
Marly threw out a runner at home
for the final out.
UP NEXT
Mac-Hi will host Ontario on
Saturday, April 29 for a double-
header at Noon.

Hermiston’s best offensive
chance of the half came around the
4:30 mark, when Fidel Contreras
corralled a long pass from behind
the Liberty net across midfield
and raced past the Falcon defense.
Contreras was running all alone
towards the net and tried to slip one
past Liberty’s goalkeeper, however
he was stopped point-blank.
Then in the second half, Herm-
iston’s offense finally began to
settle in. With less than two minutes
expired in the third quarter, Salinas
held the ball up top and surveyed the
field before starting his momentum
towards the goal. He then made
a quick stutter-step move around
the defenseman up top, gathered
himself and ripped a low shot
through traffic and into the back of
the net to make it a 6-1 game.
Salinas said as a senior, he felt he
needed to try and get a spark going
for his team’s offense in that situation.
“I feel like I’m one of the leaders on
the team and I just tried to get some-
thing going,” he said. “I put everything
on my shoulders there and it felt good
to get things sparked up like that.”

goal later in the third, Salinas got
the Bulldogs on the board with a
nearly identical play as he evaded
the defense and fired another low
shot that found its way into the net.
It cut the deficit to 7-2 with three
minutes left in the quarter.
But that was as close as Herm-
iston could get. Liberty scored the
next three goals to take a 10-2 lead
as the Falcons held possession for a
large chunk of the second half.
The Bulldogs did get a pair of
goals in the fourth quarter, one by
Calvin Giesen with an assist by
Luke Walchli with 6:33 remaining to
make it a 10-3 game and then finally
Ian Bush got on the board with just
4.9 seconds left in the game to push
the score to the final of 11-4.
The game marks the second
straight loss for the Bulldogs, who
have not scored more than five goals
in their three recent losses after
scoring more than 14 in all three
wins. And with just four games
remaining in the season, Mejia said
the Bulldogs need to change their
attitude in order to recapture some
consistency to finish it out.
“We just have to show up to prac-
tice ready to play,” he said, “because
lately I think we haven’t been
showing that we’re tired of losing”
