PORTLAND
(AP)
— Felony charges have
been filed against a woman
accused of starting a fire
that killed four people and
injured three others at a
coastal Oregon motel last
summer.
Rebecca Sinclair, 38,
of Toledo, Oregon, was
extradited to Lincoln County
on Tuesday and arraigned
on charges of second-degree
manslaughter,
criminally
negligent homicide, reckless
burning and recklessly
endangering another person,
according to authorities and
court records.
She had been arrested
on a warrant in Washington
state on March 2 but refused
to waive extradition, Interim
Police Chief Jason Malloy

SEATTLE
—
Two
Seattle police officers were
shot and injured Thursday
while responding to a
robbery at a convenience
store.
One suspect was dead,
authorities said, and another
was being questioned.
A 42-year-old female
officer was listed in satis-
factory condition at Harbor-
view Medical Center, after
her ballistics vest stopped a
bullet headed for her chest,
authorities said.
A 30-year-old male
officer, initially listed as
critical with life-threatening
injuries after being shot in
the chin and ribcage, was
upgraded to serious but
stable condition.
“Our hearts and our
thoughts are with those
officers and with their fami-
lies,” said Seattle Mayor Ed
Murray.
The robbery took place
at a 7-11 store near Pioneer
Square, the city’s oldest
neighborhood,
Deputy
Police Chief Carmen Best
said.
Officers
initially
said three suspects were
involved, but later cleared
one person.
The suspects ran from
the store and fought with
officers who tried to stop
them a block away, Best
said.
While one officer fought
with a suspect on the
ground, a female suspect
struck that officer over the
head with a bottle, Best said.
The suspects fled, and one

Investigators closed off
several blocks as police
cruisers flooded the area,
closing streets, and officers
warned people to stay away.
“We’ve got the doors
locked, and the cops are
all around us,” said Cindi
Raykovich, co-owner of a
nearby running shoe store.
“They want us to stay in
the back room. When we
walk out front, there’s a guy
standing out front who points
at us and tells us to go back.”
The department disclosed
the shooting on Twitter,
saying the robbery had been
reported near the waterfront,
several blocks south of Pike
Place Market.
Brad Clough, who works
at a bicycle repair shop
in the area, said he heard
sirens and saw at least
several dozen police officers
converge on the scene.

shot at police, who returned
fire, she said.
The suspect who opened
fire barricaded himself
inside a nearby building,
Best said.
Sgt. Sean Whitcomb,
a police spokesman, later
confirmed that that suspect
had died. It wasn’t clear
if the suspect died before
being discovered by police,
or who inflicted the fatal
wounds.

Tillamook Bay
reopens after
manure spill
SALEM (AP) —
Oregon officials say
Tillamook Bay has
reopened to commercial
shellfish harvesting after
it was closed because of
a massive spill of liquid
manure.
Wym Mathews of
the Oregon Department
of Agriculture tells The
Statesman Journal the
estimated 190,000 gallons
of manure that went to the
bay came from the Tony
Silveira Dairy after the
valve of an above-ground
storage tank broke.
The manure pooled
in a field near the dairy
barns before traveling into
a slough that connects to
a drainage system that
pumps water into the
Tillamook River. It then
entered the bay.
ODA received reports
of the spill in the middle of
last week.

Denny’s customer set ablaze at restaurant near Portland
PORTLAND (AP) —
Police in Oregon were
searching for a suspect
Thursday after a 69-year-old
man was set ablaze at a
Denny’s restaurant near
Portland.
Sgt. Dan Kraus of the
Clackamas County Sheriff’s
Office said the suspect — a
man who appeared to be his
20s — entered the restaurant
Wednesday night and sat in
booth adjacent to the victim.
He said surveillance video
then showed the suspect
pouring liquid onto the
victim. He then tossed a lit
item onto the victim, causing
a large flash.
Firefighters smelled gaso-
line inside the building and
on the victim, Kraus said.
The suspect ran from the
restaurant and headed south.
He was wearing a black,
flat-brim hat, black hooded
jacket, gray sweatpants with
a black stripe and black
shoes.
The victim was taken to a
Portland hospital. His name
has not been released.
A
similar
incident
involving gasoline and
matches happened earlier
this week at a movie theater
near the Denny’s location. It
did not start a fire, however.
The
sheriff’s
office
said the victim in that case
laughed it off and did not
press charges. Investigators
plan a follow-up interview to
see if the cases are connected.
Denny’s said in a state-
ment it is assisting with the
investigation.

Sinclair, who was staying on
the bottom floor of the City
Center Motel in Newport,
started the blaze by care-
lessly discarding smoking
materials on Aug. 5.
Firefighters found the
bodies of four people —
couples from Portland
and Springfield — in two
second-floor rooms.
Sinclair has not entered
a plea and is being held on
$750,000 bail, according
to court records. A judge
granted her request for a
court-appointed attorney.
“All I can say at this
point is the events alleged
happened in August of
2016, and I acquired the
case a few days ago, so
we’re still investigating
the allegations,” defense
attorney Jonathan Cable
said Thursday.
