April 20, 1917
The Walla Walla tribe of Indians is going
to elect a new chief a week from today at a
big feast which is to be held in memory of the
late Chief No Shirt. It is said there are several
candidates for the title worn by No Shirt for
so many years and Jim Kanine is said to be
among the Indians who aspire to the leader-
ship of the Walla Wallas. Kanine is taking an
active part in preparing the feast, which is to
be held at No Shirt’s camping grounds near
Thorn Hollow. Kanine is not mentioning the
election much but lays great stress upon the
honor being done to the departed sagamore.

April 20, 1992
Umatilla County’s assistant district
attorney resigned Friday, following the
decisions of two circuit court judges to bar
him from their courtrooms. On April 10,
Circuit Court Judge Jack Olsen said he could
no longer preside impartially over cases
involving Steve Fogelson. The judge learned
from two witnesses that Fogelson had made
disparaging remarks about him in a hallway
conversation after Olsen granted a mistrial
in a sex crime case that Fogelson was pros-
ecuting. Last Monday, Circuit Court Judge
Robert Abrams followed the course taken
by Olsen. Abrams said Fogelson has made
derogatory remarks about local judges in the
past and he will not tolerate it any more.
