In Game 1, Pendleton
(6-9, 2-0 CRC) scored five of
its seven runs in the bottom of
the first inning and The Dalles
(6-9, 0-2) scored all six of its
runs through the first three
innings. The game was tied
6-6 after three full, and then
nearly four straight innings of
zeros as both teams’ pitching
staffs settled in.
Then in the bottom of
the seventh, Nick Bower led
off with a single and was
sacrificed to second base
by Daniel Naughton. Two
batters later, Hayden Villers
stepped to the plate with two
outs and flared a hit into right
field that scored Bower for
the walk-off 7-6 victory.
“I was pretty nervous there,”
Villers recalled about his at-bat.
“The main thing on my mind
was just scoring (Bower) and
getting any kind of hit to make
sure it gets down. (The pitcher)
threw me an outside fastball
and I just stepped into it and
took it the other way.”
Then in Game 2, Pendle-
ton’s offense was relentless
against The Dalles pitchers,
cranking out 13 hits to score
the 13 runs. Bower was the
leader of the pack, as he went 3
for 3 with a triple and four RBI
in the game and finished with
five hits on the day overall,
while Cam Sandford had two
hits and three RBI and Justin
Duso added two hits, two RBI
and two runs scored.
“I thought we hit the
ball well up-and-down the
lineup,” Haguewood said. “I
thought the boys did a good
job with two strikes with
some key hits and put the
ball in play and made the
defense get us out rather than
us giving away the outs.”
Bower said that the team defi-
nitely was feeding off the energy
of the earlier walk-off win,
which may have contributed to
the performance at the plate.
“Absolutley, it definitely
put a little pep in our step and
got us excited,” Bower said.
“For us to come out second
game and hit the ball around
the yard, come out with the
win, was great.”
Pendleton sprinted out to
a 5-1 lead after two innings,
but the second time through
the line-up The Dalles batters
began to get to Pendleton
pitcher Ryan Russell. The
Riverhawks scored a pair
of runs in the third and then
three in the fourth to overtake
the Bucks with a 6-5 lead.
But the Bucks picked up
their pitcher in the bottom of
the fourth when Duso led off
with a triple into the right field
corner and Sandford followed
up with a sacrifice fly to left
field to tie the game at 6-6.
Russell, making just his
third pitching appearance
this season, went back out
for the fifth and quickly
loaded the bases for the third
straight inning. Needing just
one more out, it prompted
Haguewood to visit Russell
to try and reassure his pitcher.
“He just told me to have
confidence in my guys
behind me,” Russell recalled.
“To throw strikes, don’t
focus too much on a strikeout
and try to get a groundout.”
Instead, Russell fired an
inside fastball that the River-
hawk batter turned on and sent
an easy fly ball to left field for
the final out. It was a huge
turning point for the Buckaroos
and Haguewood said he was
proud to see Russell get himself
out of the jam unscathed.
“He’s a bulldog on the
hill there,” Haguewood said.
“He’s on his tail end of his
outing there and he did a
great job of bearing down
and getting a pop-out and we
were able to capitalize the
following inning.”
And capitalize they did.
Pendleton responded with a
six-hit, seven-run inning that
saw three different River-
hawk pitchers toe the rubber
as the Buckaroos opened up
a 13-6 lead at that point and
cruised to the win.
“I really think we’re
starting to turn the corner,”
Russell said of the Bucka-
roos. “And in league, this is
the perfect time to do it.”

“You always want to get
that first win to get things
rolling,” Pendleton coach
Tim Cary said. “Overall
we found ways to win and
that’s what good teams do.
We battled through some
adversity early and we didn’t
hit very well but we got the
hits when we needed to and
got some breaks.”
Pendleton (14-2, 2-0
CRC) ace Lauren Richards
started Game 1 in the circle
and had a decent outing with
14 strikeouts, though she did
give up six hits, two runs
and five walks. She started
out looking solid, with eight
strikeouts and just three
baserunners allowed through
the first four innings.
But starting in the fifth,
Richards wasn’t as sharp as
Buckaroo fans are used to
seeing from the junior righty
and her command was just
so-so. She loaded the bases
in the fifth, but escaped
unscathed. She again loaded
the bases in the seventh and
this time gave up a single and
a walk to bring in a pair of
runs in the inning.
“She threw more balls
than we want and fell behind
in the count more than we’re
used to,” Cary said. “But
bottom line is she beared
down when she had to. I
think it was good for her to
have to deal with that and her
attitude about it was great.”
Kirah McGlothan was
Pendleton’s best offensive
player in that game, as
she went 2 for 4 with two
doubles and three RBI. Her
second double came in the
sixth inning just after The
Dalles (1-13, 0-2) had cut the
lead to 4-2 and was looking
to get back in the game.
With runners on second and
third, McGlothan smacked a
pitch to dead center field that
clanked off the base of the
fence to score both and put
the Bucks up 6-2.
“We go up there and look
for our pitch,” McGlothan
said of her at-bat. “I was just
looking for my pitch … the
pitcher threw me a fastball up
and I just took it.”
“She’s just a great hitter,”
Cary said of the sophomore.
“She’s a great athlete, she’s
fast … we try to get her up to
bat as much as we can because
we love having her on base
and she’s been a clutch hitter
for us, not only today.”
Richards also had a
strong game at the plate and
recorded three hits with two
RBI. She also tallied two
hits in Game 2 to finish with
a very successful 5-for-7
offensive day.
In Game 2, Pendleton
came out and set the tone
right away. McGlothan led
off with her third double
of the day and Richards
followed with an RBI single
for a quick 1-0 lead. Next
batter, Kalan McGlothan
launched a two-run home
run and the Buckaroos were
off and running, eventually
leading 6-0 after one inning.
“It was nice to see the bats
come alive more than they
did in the first game,” Cary
said. “We were a little flat
to start but I think we came
out with more energy and it
showed.”
Alexis Brehaut pitched a
five-inning complete game
for Pendleton with seven
strikeouts, allowing seven
hits and two walks.
“She threw very well,”
Cary said. “She kept them
(Riverhawks) off balance,
did a nice job locating and
mixing up her speeds.”

Pendleton will finish its
season series with The Dalles
on the road on Tuesday with
a 4:30 p.m. start.

BLAZERS: Nurkic’s status ‘to be determined’

they’re hitting tough shots

dunks. After one flurry of a
third-quarter sequence when
several players on both
teams hit the floor trying
to secure a loose ball, four
towel guys frantically wiped
down the court.
McCollum shot 11 of 15
in the first half then began
the second 2 for 7 and
finished his day 16 of 28,
while Lillard went 12 for
26. McCollum’s 27 first-half
points matched a Portland
playoff record for a half
and he and Lillard had 48 of
their team’s 56 at the break.
“You’ve got to give
them a lot of credit, they
got it going,” Green said.
“At some point you have to
make them miss.”
The Warriors’ defensive
intensity after halftime was
the difference in the Blazers’
minds — and Lillard expects
everybody to do more.
“Dame and CJ, if they get
80 between them we’ve still
got to score another 40 or
50 from somewhere,” coach
Terry Stotts said.

five runs, hit a home run and
drove in five runs to help his
Weston-McEwen TigerScots
beat the Heppner Mustangs
9-5 and 16-3 in Special
District 6 action on Saturday.
Along with Speed’s
productive day on offense,
he also earned the win on
the mound in Game 1 as he
tossed 3 1/3 innings while
allowing three hits and
one unearned run with five
strikeouts. Travis Hendley
earned the win in Game 2
after tossing 3 2/3 innings of
three-hit, one-run baseball.
The TigerScots (5-6, 3-3
SD6) offense pounded out
19 hits as a team on Saturday,
and besides Speed’s produc-
tion Brendan Dearing went
a combined 4-8 with six
runs scored and two RBI,
Hendley had a pair of hits
and three runs scored, Hunter
Sater scored two hits and five
RBI and James West had a
pair of hits and two RBI.
For Heppner (1-11, 0-6),
Tyler Carter had a standout
day on offense as he tallied
four hits in the game
including a perfect 3 for 3
day in Game 1 and a double
in Game 2. Wyatt Steagall
had one of his best starts on
the mound in Game 1, lasting
3 2/3 innings with three
strikeouts while allowing
three hits and two runs.
