Associated Press PITTSBURGH — Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 31 shots in a surprise start in place of injured Matt Murray and the Pittsburgh Penguins opened their Stanley Cup title defense with a 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night. Murray was scheduled to get the nod in the playoff opener but was a late scratch after suffering a lower- body injury during warm-ups. Fleury withstood an early push by Columbus, and the Penguins responded by pulling away from the untested Blue Jackets. Phil Kessel had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh. Nick Bonino and Bryan Rust also scored, and Evgeni Malkin assisted on Rust and Kessel’s goals in his first game back after missing the final three weeks of the regular season because of an upper-body injury. Matt Calvert scored for Columbus in the third period, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves. Game 2 is Friday night in Pitts- burgh. ——— RANGERS 2, CANADIENS 0 MONTREAL — Tanner Glass scored in the first period and Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves to help New York beat Montreal in Game 1 of their first-round series. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Friday night at Bell Centre. Michael Grabner added an empty-net goal with 1:10 left. Fired up by 1960s pop star Ginette Reno’s national anthem, the Canadiens were all over New York in the opening period, but the Rangers struck first at 9:50. Montre- al’s Tomas Plekanec won a draw in his own zone, but fourth-line winger Glass pounced on it and lifted a backhander over Carey Price’s AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar Oilers 3-2 on Wednesday night in Game 1 of their Western Conference series. The Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead only for the veteran Sharks to come back and tie the game with just over 15 minutes to play. Milan Lucic and Oscar Klefbom scored for the Oilers. Joel Ward and Paul Martin scored for San Jose. Edmonton center Connor McDavid, the NHL’s leading scorer in the regular season, had one assist in his playoff debut to extend his points streak to 15 games. It was the first playoff game in the Oilers’ new downtown arena and the team’s first NHL postseason game in almost 11 years. Game 2 is Friday in Edmonton. ——— shoulder. Marchand scored off the rebound of Patrice Bergeron’s shot. Frank Vatrano added a goal for Boston in his first NHL playoff game, and Tuukka Rask made 26 saves. Bobby Ryan scored for Ottawa, and Craig Anderson stopped 23 shots. PAUL, Minn. — Joel Edmundson scored for St. Louis at 17:48 of overtime, Jake Allen made a career-high 51 saves and the Blues sneaked into Minnesota to steal Game 1 of their first-round series from the Wild with a 2-1 victory. Blues star Vladimir Tarasenko was quiet for most of the night until he drove into a crowd and threaded a pass through the Wild defense to Edmundson, who knocked in the second postseason goal of his career. Zach Parise tied the game with 22.7 seconds left in regulation for the Wild, whose dominance was thwarted by a stellar performance from Allen. He made the most saves ever recorded against the Wild in their 16-season history. Game 2 is Friday in Minnesota. NBA: Spurs playoff streak now at 20 BLAZERS: Will face Golden State in playoffs Continued from 1B Continued from 1B eighth and final playoff spot in the West on Sunday, when the Denver Nuggets fell to Oklahoma City. It is the fourth straight season that the Blazers have made the postseason. Portland will open its series against top-seeded Golden State on Sunday afternoon in Oakland. The defending Western Conference champion Warriors defeated the Blazers in the second round last season. Lillard and McCollum were held out for a second straight game: Portland also sat them on Monday for a 99-98 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, and reserve guard Shabazz Napier scored a career-high 32 points. Portland also sat forward Al Farouq-Aminu, and reserve guard Allen Crabbe missed a third straight game with foot soreness. The Pelicans said DeMarcus Cousins (right Achilles) for the fourth straight game and Anthony Davis (left knee) for the third. Coach Alvin Gentry said he’s getting minutes for the younger players to put some pressure on them and see how they respond. Pat Connaughton’s 3-pointer gave the Blazers a 33-22 lead early in the second quarter, but the Pelicans took a 47-46 lead late on Alexis Ajinca’s dunk. The game was tied at 53 at the break. Portland went up 64-58 on Jake Layman’s 3-pointer, but again the Pelicans came back, knotting the game at 75. Another Layman 3 prevented New Orleans from pulling ahead. Connaughton’s 3-pointer put Portland in front 93-86 in the final period. Connaughton finished with a career-high 19 points. The loss snapped an eight- game winning streak at home for Portland. TIP INS Trail Blazers: Portland lost all four of its regular season games against the Warriors. Kevin Durant averaged 29.3 points and 7.8 rebounds in those wins. — Chicago did in 2012, followed by Miami, Indiana, Atlanta, Cleveland and now Boston. The Celtics will meet the Bulls in Round 1. Defending NBA champion Cleve- land gets Indiana in the East first round, and they’ll play the first game of the postseason Saturday afternoon. Cavaliers star LeBron James has played in 51 first-round games in his career — and his teams in Cleveland and Miami are 44-7 in those contests. Only two of the eight first-round matchups were undecided going into Wednesday. In the Western Conference, No. 1 Golden State will open against No. 8 Portland, No. 2 San Antonio faces No. 7 Memphis, No. 3 Houston gets No. 6 Oklahoma City and the Los Angeles Clippers and Utah Jazz will meet in the last quarterfinal. Home-court for the Clippers-Jazz series was the last remaining unknown part of the playoff schedule — and it went to the Clippers, who pulled away in the second half to beat Sacramento and lock up No. 4. In the East, two series were deter- mined before the final night. No. 3 Toronto will play No. 6 Milwaukee, and No. 4 Washington will meet No. 5 Atlanta. The Indiana-Cleveland, Milwau- kee-Toronto, Memphis-San Antonio and Utah-Clippers series will start Saturday. The Atlanta-Washington, Portland-Golden State, Chica- go-Boston and Oklahoma City- Houston matchups begin Sunday. MVP ballots are due to the league office on Friday, so the winner of the projected battle between Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook and Hous- ton’s James Harden for that trophy will be decided before the Thun- der-Rockets series starts. However, the vote count won’t be known until the NBA hosts its inaugural awards show in New York on June 26. The Spurs are in the playoffs for the 20th consecutive year, by far the longest active streak in the NBA. Atlanta is postseason-bound for the 10th straight season, followed by Memphis (7), the Clippers (6) and the Warriors and Rockets (5 each). There’s only one rematch from last year’s opening round — that being the Spurs-Grizzlies series, which was also a 2 vs. 7 matchup a year ago. Both teams changed a bit since, with the Spurs no longer having the retired Tim Duncan and the Grizzlies being coached by former Miami assistant David Fizdale. Detroit, Miami, Charlotte and Dallas made the playoffs last season, and didn’t qualify this season. sweep T-Wolves East Oregonian ONTARIO — The Blue Mountain baseball team’s slide continued on Wednesday afternoon, as it came up empty handed from the trip to Treasure Valley as the Chukars swept the Timberwolves 10-2 and 6-3. BMCC (12-16, 3-7 East) got first run of the day in the first game when TJ Rea doubled with one out and then Austin Florez hit NWAC a double of his own with two Blue Mountain outs to bring in Rea for a 1-0 lead. But that was short-lived Treasure Valley as TVCC got the run back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single by Tanner Cantwell to tie it at 1-1. Treasure Valley then took the lead in the third inning, scoring a run off of a wild pitch, sacrifice fly to center field and an RBI single from Dylan Mansanzarez to take a 4-1 lead. BMCC scored its only other run of the game in the top of the sixth when Florez scored from third on a wild pitch. In game two, Treasure Valley held a 5-0 lead after three innings until BMCC got on the board in the fourth. Tate Spivey led off the inning with a double and then scored on a RBI groundout from Jared Rogers to make it 5-1. BMCC added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Dustin Durflinger to bring in Andrew Hively. The Timberwolves final run came in the seventh when Spivey singled to bring in Durflinger to cut the lead to 5-3, but that was as close as the Timberwolves could get. Durflinger led the team with three hits on the day with one run and one RBI, while Spivey had a pair of hits as did Florez. UP NEXT Blue Mountain hopes to stop its slide on Saturday when it travels to Pasco (WA) to take on Columbia Basin. ——— 2-3 10-6 Game 1 R H E BMCC 100 001 000 — 2 8 1 TVCC 103 012 03X — 10 16 4 (BM) B.
