The Knights came into the game with a perfect 9-0 record, ranked No. 5 in the OSAA’s Class 3A rankings and had its ace pitcher Austin Rice starting on the mound, while the defending state champ Tigers stood at 8-1 with eight straight wins and a No. 4 OSAA ranking and countered with pitcher Tony Flores. And the game started out looking that way as the teams traded runs and stood in a 3-3 tie heading to the bottom of the third inning. However in its half of the third, Stanfi eld’s offense began to show it’s potential as the Tigers pushed across six runs and went on to beat the Knights by a 13-3 score in fi ve innings at Madigan Field. But after Rice left, the trio of Adrian Roa, Johnny Phillips and Brady Harrington allowed a combined 10 hits, 10 runs and three walks in two innings. “We got into their pitching staff and that helped us a lot,” Stanfi eld’s Brody Woods said. “We got through the lineup and that’s usually when we start picking up on pitchers and start hitting the ball real good especially at the top of the lineup. However, the Buckaroos’ second-ranked 5A defense led by junior pitcher Lauren Richards made sure the Pioneers wouldn’t add to that total and picked up their sixth shutout of the season with a 9-0 win at Yantis Park. “I love my defense, I can always count on them,” said Richards, who struck out the game’s fi nal two batters and nine total with no walks. “It’s so relieving being in the circle and knowing you have that defense behind you. You can just count on them always, and defi nitely getting ground balls and fl y balls, you just know they’re going to get outs.” The Pioneers (9-2) were coming off a Pendleton Mac-Hi 9 0 weekend doubleheader in which they had 43 total hits, but managed just two off bunts against the Bucks (12-2). “This is probably the best team we’ve seen all year, by far the best pitcher,” said Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian. “I told them, ‘It’s good to get you butt kicked a couple times because then we know what we need to work on.’ … We had too many strikeouts looking and we’ve got to make adjustments with that, but she’s a great pitcher and they’re number one in the state for a reason. “And it’s good to see that, get that compe- tition. Good teams need to see better teams, and defi nitely today Pendleton was the better team.” Pendleton may have made things look easy at times on Tuesday, but head coach See BUCKAROOS/3B Staff photo by Matt Entrup Pendleton’s Kila Solomon (25) heads toward while her teammates await and head coach Tim Cary claps following her home run against Mac-Hi on Tuesday in Mil- ton-Freewater. We’ve got people shooting half-court shots at every break, we’ve got kids for ball boys ... we’re entertainment. And if they’re so self-important they can’t recognize that, it’s on them. Not me.“ — Mark Cuban The Dallas Mavericks owner hon- ored ex-Cowboys QB Tony Romo by letting him dress with team for Tuesday’s game, but took heat from the NBA about the move. Mariners place Segura on DL SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners placed shortstop Jean Segura on the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday with a strained right hamstring. Seattle was hoping to avoid the DL stint for Segura, but manager Scott Servais said it was the better decision to give his starting shortstop a few extra days to recover and not play short-handed in the interim. “It’s a mild strain. I really thought yesterday that he’s just going to miss a couple of days,” Servais said. “Trying to be very cautious and be out ahead of this thing, the way the rules are now and the 10-day DL it just makes more sense to put him on the DL. I fully expect he’ll be back and ready to go at the end of 10 days.” Segura is Seattle’s only regular batting above .300 through the fi rst full week of the regular season. He is hitting .313 with 10 hits and six runs scored.
