Page 2B SPORTS East Oregonian Friday, April 7, 2017 Golf Hoffman soars to take lead at Masters Associated Press AUGUSTA, Ga. — In the toughest opening round at the Masters in 10 years, it all felt so easy to Charley Hoffman. For the better part of three hours, in a ferocious wind that made the Georgia pines creak, he had the right yardage for the perfect club to hit every shot he wanted. And then he made the putts, so many that it felt as though he never missed. Hoffman made seven birdies over his last 11 holes for a 7-under 65. It was 10 shots better than the average score Thursday at Augusta National. His four-shot lead was the largest for the opening round at the Masters in 62 years. “For lack of any better words,” Hoffman said, “it was a dream.” With gusts approaching 40 mph, Hoffman and Masters newcomer William McGirt (69) were the only players to break 70. Hoffman didn’t have reason to believe he would be one of them. He three-putted his third hole for bogey. He three-putted the fifth hole for bogey, both putts affected by the wind. “After that, I can’t remember missing a putt,” Hoffman said. Hoffman’s four-shot lead was the largest at the Masters for the opening round since Jack Burke Jr. had a four-shot lead in 1955. Lee Westwood, who has the credentials as the best player to have never won a major, ran off five straight birdies late in the afternoon and salvaged a 70. Only eight other players broke par, a group that included Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia. The average score was 74.98, the highest for an opening round since 2007. PREPS: Riverside softball edges Pilot Rock in non-league game Continued from 1B Pendleton (4-9) stranded two more in the seventh, and neither team scored again until the ninth, when Pendleton took the lead in the top of the frame on a single by Naughton (4 for 5) and a ground ball by Nick Bower. La Grande (4-2) answered, though, and Zack Jacobs hit a single up the middle with runners on second and third to knot the score at 4-4. Again Pendleton left two runners on in the 10th to give them 13 for the game. “We had great pitching all day and we had plenty of guys on bases, we just couldn’t get hits with guys in scoring position,” Haguewood said. “The pitchers are throwing strikes which is great to see.” Pendleton scored two in the top of the fourth on wild pitches as Ryan Russell and Austin Zaugg came around to give the Bucks a 2-0 lead after reaching on walks. Russell combined with Nick Lani on the mound to make sure that was enough. Russell allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts over five innings, and Lani threw the last two allowing two hits with one strikeout. Wyatt Morris went 2 for 2 at the plate, but Pendleton still left plenty of chances out there with nine stranded runners. Pendleton won 2-0. pitchers’ duels at La Grande on Thursday. Lauren Richards got the better of the Tigers’ Mady Bell for a 4-1 win in the opener, and then Alexi Brehaut bettered Allie Brock 2-0 in the night cap. Both pitchers drove in runs at the plate to help their cause, and Pendleton coach Tim Cary said the reliable defenses of both teams helped the games speed right along. The Bucks (11-2) grabbed the lead right away in Game 1 as Richards drove in two runs with a double in the top of the first inning. Pendleton added another run in the second on a double by Kila Solomon, and one more in the fourth off a total of seven hits. Aspen Garton (2 for 3) and Kalan McGlothan (2 for 4) also had strong hitting games. Richards didn’t allow La Grande (5-2) to score until the fifth inning and finished with 12 strikeouts and four walks in the complete game. She gave up four hits. “It was a quick, clean game,” Cary said. “Both pitchers threw well.” Game 2 was even quicker as the teams took a scoreless tie into the top of the fifth inning. That was when Pendleton scored both of its runs by stringing together a couple hits and Madi Parker and Brehaut each hit RBI singles. Brehaut didn’t have any strikeouts, but walked just one and also allowed only four hits to get the complete- game shutout. “Again it was another quick clean game for both teams,” Cary said. “It was a great pitchers duel, Alexi mixed it up well with a variety of pitches and had La Grande off balance the whole game.” UP NEXT Pendleton will play at Mac-Hi on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ——— Game 1 R H E PHS 210 100 0 — 4 7 1 LGHS 000 010 0 — 1 4 1 L. RIVERSIDE 6, PILOT ROCK 5 — At Boardman, Skylar Wightman smacked a two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Riverside a 6-5 walk-off victory over Pilot Rock on Thursday evening. Wightman, who also struck out six and earned the win in the pitching circle, finished the game 4 for 4 at the plate for Riverside (8-2) with one single, two doubles and a home run to finish with five RBI. Behind Wightman, Abby Hernandez went 3 for 3 with a double and scored the game-winning run. Pilot Rock (7-2) got a good start on the Pirates and held a 5-1 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth. But in the sixth, the Pirate bats finally got to Rockets pitcher Tehya Ostrom and got three runs to pull within 5-4, which set up Riverside’s walk-off win in the seventh. Jacey Wilson, Ostrom and Rhyanne Oates each had doubled for Pilot Rock, while Wilson had two RBIs and Ostrom one RBI. TO: I moved to Pilot Rock when I was in second grade and I started playing sports around then with softball. What is the best part of playing with the group of teammates in Pilot Rock? Being able to see my teammates and I improve and accomplish goals and to see how far we have come. What pitches do you throw, and do you have a favorite? A fastball, changeup, riseball and occasional drop ball. My favorite is a fastball after a good changeup. What other sports have you played? I’ve always played volleyball, basketball and softball until this year I didn’t play basketball. Do you have a favorite college or pro sports team? I’ve always loved the Arizona Wildcats softball. Do you have a favorite athlete? My sister, Taryn. She is a great basketball player. And a special shout out to her, ‘Happy Birthday Taryn!’ What is your favorite thing about growing up in Eastern Oregon? Besides the beautiful sunsets is the amount of amazing athletes that come from the EO. Like goodness, we have some studs here. What is your favorite place to visit in the Pacific Northwest? I’d say Portland or Seattle just because it’s so much more exciting and bright than this area. What is one place in the world you have always wanted to visit? Iceland What are your college plans for after high school? I will attend Blue Mountain CC to study to be an elementary school teacher and play softball. What is your favorite class in school? Advanced biology or choir. Favorite food served in the school cafeteria? I eat at home, but if I were to eat at school it’d be the pizza. Who is your favorite teacher that you’ve had? Mrs. Mills, who taught all of my science classes from freshman year until this year. She’s retired now, but she is a wonderful example of dedication to education. Do you have any hobbies outside of sports? I love music, art, and dance. What is your favorite food? Watermelon for sure. What is the worst food you’ve eaten? Jalapenos. One time I forgot how spicy they were and ate a slice raw. Pretty sure I drank four glasses of milk trying to get rid of the sting. Favorite local restau- rant? Well in Pilot Rock we have one, named Archies. But outside of Pilot Rock, my favorite is The Saddle in Pendleton. What is the last book you read? Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. What is your favorite movie? Good Will Hunting. That one cuts deep. What is your favorite TV show? Dancing With the Stars. My great grandma, mom and I love to watch it. -7 -3 -2 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 E E E E E E E +1 +1 +1 +2 +2 +3 Ostrom had quite the weekend in the pitching circle, pitching three complete game shutouts with a combined 31 strikeouts as her Pilot Rock squad beat Echo, Bonanza and Vale on Friday and Saturday.
