Page 2B East Oregonian NCAA: NC back in running to host events after law change Associated Press GLENDALE, Ariz. — The NCAA says it will consider North Carolina as a host for championship events again after the state rolled back a law that limited protections for LGBT people. In a statement Tuesday, the governing body said its Board of Governors had reviewed moves to repeal repealed the so-called “bathroom bill” and replace it with a compromise law. The NCAA said the new law “meets the minimal NCAA requirements” while expressing some concerns about provisions within it. The statement says a majority of the board “reluctantly voted” to allow for consideration of bids from North Carolina during current deliberations for sites running through 2022. Events for the 2017-18 season that have already been awarded to the state — such as opening-weekend men’s basketball tournament games in Charlotte — will remain in place. “We are actively determining site selections, and this new law has minimally achieved a situation where we believe NCAA cham- pionships may be conducted in a nondiscriminatory environment,” the board’s statement reads. “If we find that our expectations of a discrimination-free environment are not met, we will not hesitate to take necessary action at any time.” The NCAA pulled seven events from the state in September for the 2016-17 season, including men’s basketball tournament games from Greensboro in March, in response to the law. The NCAA had made it clear that more events already awarded to the state could be relocated, while also saying it would remove North Carolina bids from consideration as it prepared to announce is next wave of site announcements. MARINERS: Continued from 1B seventh, Luke Gregerson allowed one hit in the eighth and Ken Giles finished with a one-hit ninth for his second save. Danny Valencia had two hits and drove in a run, the Mariners’ only one in two games against the Astros. “We couldn’t string any good at bats together, and their pitching has been very good,” manager Scott Servais said. “We chased some balls out of the strike zone and have gotten away from controlling the zone a little bit.” Gonzalez is 12 for 27 with two homers and four RBIs against Iwakuma, who allowed both runs, four hits and three walks in six innings. He didn’t allow a hit until McCann’s homer to left field. Mitch Haniger doubled to start the fourth inning before McCullers intentionally walked Kyle Seager with two outs. An RBI single by Danny Valencia tied it and Leonys Martin reached on an error by Gonzalez at first, loading the bases, but Mike Zunino grounded out. Jarrod Dyson hit an inning-ending groundout with two on in the sixth. TRAINER’S ROOM Mariners: Ace Felix Hernandez, who left Monday’s start after the fifth inning with tightness in a groin, was still dealing with the problem but said he expects to take his next turn in the rotation. Astros: Houston starter Collin McHugh is to make am injury rehabilitation start for Triple-A Fresno on Thursday. McHugh opened the season on the 10-day DL after dealing with “dead arm.” SMYLY MOVED TO 60-DAY DL The Mariners moved left-hander Drew Smyly from the 10-day to the 60-day disabled list while he recovers from a flexor strain in his left arm. Smyly was 1-0 with a 5.0 ERA in three Cactus League games this spring. Seattle claimed right- hander Evan Marshall off waivers from Arizona to take Smyly’s spot on the 40-man roster. Marshall, who was designated for assignment by Arizona on March 28, was assigned to Triple-A Tacoma. SCORELESS START Houston’s pitching staff opened the season by throwing 12 1/3 scoreless innings, which is the longest streak to start a season in franchise history. It’s the second time the Astros have held their opponents to one run or less in both of their first two games and the first time since 1979 when they did it in their first three. UP NEXT Mariners: LHP James Paxton starts in the third game of this series on Wednesday. Paxton was 6-7 with a 3.79 ERA in 20 starts last season. Astros: RHP Charlie Morton is to make his Astros debut on Wednesday. Morton missed most of last season because of hamstring surgery. He was 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in four starts. Utah opened the game with an 11-0 run and was having its way with a heavy dose of Gobert and Hayward, but Portland chipped away. McCollum had 10 second-quarter points on 5-for-8 shooting. The Trail Blazers took their only lead at 31-30, but a 13-2 Jazz run pushed the lead back to 10. “I thought we got good shots early and weren’t able to connect on them and then it just kind of snowballed after that,” Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. TIP-INS Trail Blazers: Jusef Nurkic (leg) missed his third consecutive game. ... Portland was outrebounded 47-28. Jazz: Rodney Hood (knee), Derrick Favors (knee), George Hill (groin) and Raul Neto (groin) did not play. ... Dante Exum went down with a hip injury in the third quarter and did not return. PLAYOFF IMPLICA- TIONS Trail Blazers: Portland holds a half-game lead over the Denver Nuggets for the last Western Conference playoff spot with four games remaining. It holds the tiebreak over the Nuggets. Jazz: Utah has a one-game lead over the Clippers for the No. 4 seed in the West with four games to go. W A L K I N G WOUNDED Utah has used 22 different starting lineups this season. The lineup of Hayward, Gobert, Boris Diaw, Joe Ingles and Dante Exum started for just the second time this season. “People coach and play the end of the season in various ways,” Snyder said. “Our situation is so variable. We’ve got health (issues), we’ve got home-court (advantage) and we’ve got seeding. You want to be playing well and be confi- dent going in. So there’s a lot of different factors. “In my mind, the best thing for us to do is take each game at a time and whoever’s ready to go, put them out there and try to play as well as we can.” UP NEXT Trail Blazers: Portland hosts Karl-Anthony Towns and the Timberwolves on Thursday after losing to them Monday in Minnesota 110-109. Jazz: Utah hosts the Timberwolves on Friday as it tries to catch Houston for fourth place in the Western Conference. WRESTLING: Tickets start at just $15 per person Continued from 1B among other independent pro wrestlers. “We’re bringing in a great crop of well-known talent,” Prestige CEO William Quintana said in an email. Anderson, who went by Ken Kennedy with WWE, and Masters were both staples of the WWE’s Raw and SmackDown brands during their tenures in the mid and late 2000s. They will be joined as headliners by current TNA star Ange- lina Love and current UFC fighter ‘Filthy’ Tom Lawlor. Along with those four, the event will also feature some of the top heavyweight, light heavyweight and even luchador wrestlers in the Pacific Northwest. “Our goal as a company is to provide fun, family entertainment with a focus on action packed wrestling,” Quintana said, “featuring the best up-and-coming wrestlers as well as former superstars.” It is a pretty impressive haul for a company that was formed just four months ago. Quintana said that the idea to start it came to him while driving one day in the fall, which resulted in him calling up friends Michael Neil, now the COO, and Anthony Cabrera, the CFO, to see if they wanted in. All three men have minimal professional experience around wrestling aside from being fans of the sport, but have extensive experience promoting music concerts and events all around the country and felt it would be a good step. The event starts at 7 p.m. and will last approximately 3 to 4 hours. Tickets start at $15 for general admission, and then increase to $25 for ringside seats. There are also two VIP packages, where for $40 a customer gets one general admission ticket, early show entry and a chance for a meet-and- greet with performers for autographs and photos. And then for $50, or the Gold package, you get a ringside seat with the early entry and meet-and-greet opportunity. Visit Prestige Championship Wrestling on Facebook for more informa- tion. Quintana said that the company’s hope is to grow and expand to multiple events a year in Eastern Oregon and Washington. As of now, Prestige Champi- onship Wrestling 2 is tenta- tively scheduled for June 23 also at EOTEC.
