Naughton (2 for 3) brought in Parker Smith (2 for 2) and Cam Sandford to make it 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Shaw Jerome (2 for 5) then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Bower. “That was a good come- from-behind win,” said Pendleton coach T.J. Hague- wood. “We got some timely hits and had good intensity in the dugout helping each other along.” A single by Jerome and a double by Naughton then added two more runs in the sixth, but Pendleton (2-7) didn’t need them as it played good defense behind Zaugg. A double play on a ground-out to Naughton at short ended the top of the sixth. After getting the force at second the Bucks caught the lead runner getting greedy and tagged him after a rundown between third and home. Zaugg allowed one unearned run on four hits and three walks, with one strikeout. Hayden Villers (2 for 3) played a key role for the Bucks early in the game and drove in two runs in the first and one in the fourth. ——— R H E CHS 311 100 0 — 6 10 2 PHS 201 232 X — 10 9 3 C. WOOD RIVER 8, PENDLETON 4 (6 innings) — At Boise, Idaho, Pendleton created plenty of opportunities but stranded 10 runners to fall to Wood River out of Hailey, Idaho, in its second game the Buck’s Bags Tournament on Friday. Wood River ended up with 12 runners left on, but answered Pendleton’s run in the bottom of the first off a Nick Bower double with three runs in the top of the second and led the rest of the way. Pendleton (2-8) pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth when Bower (2 for 4) scored on a wild pitch followed by Ryan Russell scoring from third on an error, but Pendleton struck out three times with runners in scoring position in the sixth and left the bases loaded. The game ended there due to a time limit. Austin Zaugg (2 for 2) and Shaw Jerome (2 for 3) led Pendleton at the plate and Russell got his first start of the season on the mound. He allowed three runs on six hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts, but Pendleton’s bullpen struggled when he left after three complete and needed 80 pitches to get through the next 2 1/3 inning. KENNEDY 13-15, HEPPNER 7-5 — At Heppner, six-run innings by the Trojans put the Mustangs into holes they wouldn’t climb out of on Friday in non-league baseball action. Kennedy (7-2) scored six in the fifth to pull away late in Game 1 to win 13-7, and then answered Heppner’s big first inning in Game 2 with six runs in the second and added eight more in the third to get a big lead in a 15-5 win in five innings. Heppner (1-4) had pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth in Game 1 when Beau Wolters (3 for 3) hit an RBI double. Kennedy scored all six of its runs in the sixth with two outs when three straight walks pushed the first run across the plate, then two singles, an error and another single brought the rest in. It was another Wolters double followed by an error and singles by Kannon Wilkins and Matt Orem that put Heppner up 4-1 after one in Game 2, but Kennedy’s second featured seven hits, three hit batters and a walk. SOFTBALL PILOT ROCK 7, ECHO 0 — At La Grande, Tehya Ostrom struck out 10 batters and the defense came to her aid in the fourth to shut out Echo during their softball game at the Union Tournament on Friday at Pioneer Park. Pilot Rock (5-1) scored twice in the first inning for an early lead, but Echo (2-3) threatened it in the fourth but shortstop Bekah Roe scooped up a grounder and threw it to catcher Rhyanne Oates to get an out at the plate. Then when the Cougars got two on with one out in the sixth, Ostrom struck out the next two batters to erase that threat. She finished with no walks by did hit one batter, and also batted 2 for 3. Roe went 3 for 4. Sydney Richwine went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and Mallory Copeland (3 for 3) was a homer shy of the cycle and added two RBIs. They weren’t the only players with big games at the plate to support pitcher McKenna Stallings. Brooke Smiley (2 for 2) scored three runs, Micha Fortune (3 for 4) scored twice and Graci Bullock (2 for 3) drove in a pair. Stallings went all five in the circle and had five strikeouts. Weston-McEwen (2-2) was unable to find the gaps in its final at-bat and went down in order on hit balls. It was a back-and-forth game and Jordyn Lambert gave the TigerScots a 4-3 lead when she led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run, but Bonanza tied it in the sixth with back-to-back hits with two outs. TigerScots starting pitcher Bailey Hillmick got out of the inning and through the seventh with no further damage. She finished with nine strikeouts and two walks. Copeland added to her already big afternoon going 2 for 3 with four RBIs and also pitched the first six innings to get the win. By DOUG FEINBERG Associated Press DALLAS — UConn’s record 111-game winning streak came to a startling end when Mississippi State pulled off perhaps the biggest upset in women’s basketball history, stunning the Huskies 66-64 on Morgan William’s overtime buzzer beater in the national semifinals Friday night. William hit a 15-footer to cap it, moments after a replay review awarded UConn two free throws for a flagrant 1 foul call that tied the game with 26.6 seconds left. “I live for moments like this,” William said. “UConn, they’re an incred- ible team. For me to make that shot against them, it’s unbelievable. I’m still in shock right now. I wanted to take the shot. I wanted to take the shot and I made it.” UConn coach Geno FINAL FOUR #2 Miss. St. #1 UConn 66 64 Auriemma had a wry smile on his face after the final shot. There wasn’t much else he could do, the chance for a fifth straight national title suddenly beyond his grasp. The Huskies hadn’t lost in 865 days, with that defeat coming to Stanford in over- time on Nov. 17, 2014. “We had an incredible run, but we came up against a much better team tonight,” Auriemma said. The Bulldogs (34-4) will play South Carolina for the national championship Sunday night in a matchup of two SEC teams. Mississippi State (33-5) and UConn met in the Sweet 16 last season and the Huskies won by 60 points — the most-lopsided win in regional semifinals history. All season long the Bulldogs had that humili- ating loss on their minds. Now they’ve erased that defeat, beating UConn (36-1) on the grandest stage in one of the sport’s greatest games. “I don’t have to play them 100 times. Only have to beat them once,” Mississippi State coach Vic Schaefer said. “That is one heck of a basketball team, the greatest of all-time. But how proud am I of my kids?” Mississippi State led 64-62 before a replay review gave Katie Lou Samuelson the two free throws that tied the game. After a UConn turnover, William held the ball at the top of the key before dribbling to her right and pulling up for the shot, with the ball in the air when the buzzer sounded.
