The Pendleton Lions Club was
moved to action after hearing the Pend-
leton Fire Department chief discuss fire
safety during a recent presentation.
“Mike Ciraulo said he never took
a dead body out of a house with a
working smoke detector,” said John
Taylor, past president of the club. “That
really made an impact.”
Taylor, along with Lyle Jensen, are
co-chairing a Lions Club project that
will replace or install working smoke
detectors in homes in and around
Riverside Mobile Estates. Taylor said
they targeted the neighborhood after
Ciraulo said there had been several
structure fires in the area.
Members of the Lions Club, the fire
department and students from Blue
Mountain Community College will set
out Saturday at 9 a.m. to provide the
service free of charge. People are not
obligated to allow the group in to make
the installation — it’s purely volunteer,
Taylor said.

UMATILLA — A
special board meeting of
the Umatilla Museum and
Historical Foundation board
is planned to inform current
members of changes and
allow the election of board
members and officers.
The meeting will be
held Saturday at 11 a.m.
at the museum, 911 Sixth
St., Umatilla. All current
members are encouraged to
assist the vice president in a
successful transition toward
future endeavors.
For more information,
call the museum at 541-922-

IONE — Budding
authors or those wanting
guidance in sharing their
stories are invited to attend a
free writing class.
Writing the Stories of
Your Life started Monday
and is offered weekly
through April 24 at 10:30
a.m. at Ione Community
Church, 375 E. Main St.
Stacy Shelton is facilitating
the informal sessions, which
will encourage people to
share some of their stories
and put them on paper for
family and friends.
Each week, participants
will write one-two pages
as homework. During the
weekly sessions, the group
will brainstorm a topic and
share what they wrote the
previous week.
Shelton said it’s not
designed as an English class
and will not involve red
marks on papers or grades.

teers and representatives from the fire
department will be armed with ladders,
drills and screws to put the smoke
detector in place and then test it.
Although the club was too late in
applying for a grant from the Oregon
Office of the State Fire Marshal, Taylor
said they decided to fund the project
themselves. The group provided
$1,000 from its own coffers to purchase
the supplies, which includes a 10-year
battery.
“We want to do what we can to help
save people’s lives,” Taylor said.
The club, Taylor said, plans to move
forward with the effort as part of an
ongoing project. They hope to perform
the community service again in the fall.
Fire officials encourage people to
check their smoke detectors at least
twice a year during the time changes to
ensure they are working.

including to make donations for future
smoke detector distribution, call Taylor
