FRIDAY
12:03 a.m. - A report of shots fired near Northeast 10th
Street, Hermiston, was called into the Hermiston police.
2:45 a.m. - A drunk driver was reported in the drive-
through of Taco Bell, 2001 S.W. Court Place, Pendleton.
12:24 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office received
a report of identity theft from a resident of Sagebrush Road,
Hermiston. A second report of fraud was received at 2:06
p.m. from a resident of Diagonal Road, Hermiston.
12:53 p.m. - Pendleton police received a report of
possible embezzlement from a caller at Southwest Perkins
Avenue.
3:43 p.m. - An off-duty Morrow County sheriff’s deputy
followed a suspected drunk driver in an older Ford Bronco
on Highway 730, and made contact with the driver at
California and Fourth streets, Irrigon. The woman was
not intoxicated, but said she was having trouble with the
steering.
5:34 p.m. - Intoxicated subjects kept Pendleton police
and emergency crews busy throughout the evening hours.
Emergency services were called at 5:34 p.m. near Highway
11 and Southeast Court Avenue for a man who had fallen
down in the roadway. At 6:49 p.m. an intoxicated man
walking on Southwest Frazer Avenue and Fifth Street was
reportedly yelling at passing cars, but police could not locate
him. Police responded to The Saddle Restaurant, 2101
S.E. Court Ave., after a report of a possible drunk driver.
Two reports of a disturbance at the Frontier Tavern, 129
S.W. 18th St., came in at 9:22 p.m. And at 10:02 p.m. an
employee at Oxford Suites, 2400 S.W. Court Place, reported
an intoxicated man in the lobby bothering guests and the
manager, and asked for him to be removed.
6:46 p.m. - A woman called the Morrow County Sheriff’s
Office to report she was almost run off the road by a
possible drunk driver on South Main Street, Boardman.
6:51 p.m. - A man repossessing a vehicle on Wagon
Wheel Loop, Irrigon, called the Morrow County Sheriff’s
Office when the owner of the vehicle attempted to drive it off
the caller’s tow truck.
SATURDAY
12:16 a.m. - Umatilla police were called to the Riverside
Sports Bar and Lounge, 1501 Sixth St., Umatilla, to deal with
an unruly customer.
1:50 a.m. - More drinking, more trouble in Pendleton.
An intoxicated man, this time at Mosa, 138 S. Main St.,
prompted a call to Pendleton police after he fell outside
the bar. Officers also stopped a possible drunk driver at
2:17 a.m. on Southeast Frazer Avenue. At 3:39 a.m., police
responded to the vicinity of Southeast Court Avenue and
Highway 11, near the Eastgate viaduct, for a man lying
on the side of the road. And police also responded to the
vicinity of Northwest Fourth Street and Ellis Avenue at 4:16
a.m. after a resident called to report an intoxicated man
vomiting and passed out on the side of the road.
7:47 a.m. - A resident of Northwest Ninth Street,
Pendleton, reported his roommate “is saying naughty things
to him.” He requested contact from a Pendleton police
officer.
10:11 a.m. - A house on East Van Buren Street, Athena,
was egged sometime during the night, the homeowner
complained to the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office.
12:11 p.m. - A vehicle was egged sometime during the
night at a residence on Northwest Sixth Street, Pendleton.
Another egging was reported at 6:28 p.m. on a vehicle on
Southwest Riverside Drive.
7:45 p.m. - Pendleton police were called when a resident
of Southeast Byers reported someone in the shed behind his
girlfriend’s house. Officers arrested a man on a warrant.
10:01 p.m. - A vehicle was reportedly broken into at
Stateline Community Church, 85440 Highway 11, Milton-
Freewater, while the owner was in the church. A Umatilla
County sheriff’s deputy took a report.
SUNDAY
12:35 a.m. - Pendleton police again had their hands full
with intoxicated people. Officers responded to a disturbance
at Pendleton Square Apartments, 300 S.W. 28th Drive, for
an intoxicated man. Police were also called to the vicinity
of Southwest 21st Street and Southwest Nye Avenue for
an intoxicated man passed out in a vehicle. At 6:03 p.m.,
a caller reported a possible drunk driver on Southwest
28th Street, but officers were unable to locate anyone. At
11:55 p.m. an employee of Indian Hills Chevron’s Circle K
store called Pendleton police to report an intoxicated man
staggering down Third Street toward downtown Pendleton;
again, police were unable to find the man. And early Monday
morning at 12:21 a.m., a woman called to report an intoxi-
cated man being belligerent outside her home on Southwest
Eighth Street. That man was located and arrested.
12:52 a.m.- A man was cited and released for drunk
driving after he hit a tree with his vehicle in the parking lot of
the Midway Tavern, 1705 N. First St., Hermiston.
4:26 a.m. - A man who missed the Greyhound bus at
Pilot Travel Center, 2115 S. Highway 395, Stanfield, was
being disruptive, prompting a call to Stanfield police.
5:21 p.m. - The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office was
called after a resident of Highway 11, Milton-Freewater,
found meat and trash thrown into their yard over the back
fence. The caller thought the neighbors, with whom they are
having problems, might have been trying to poison their dog.
6:15 p.m. - A resident of Southeast Third Street,
Pendleton, called Pendleton police from the nearby Circle K
store to report a man had broken into his home and was still
inside.
7:19 p.m. - A caller on Sixth Street, Umatilla, called police
to report a man was hit by a car. Umatilla police issued a
citation to the driver.
8:26 p.m. - Pendleton police received a report of a
burglary sometime over the weekend at a residence on
Southwest Nye Avenue.
ARRESTS, CITATIONS
Friday
•Hermiston police arrested Benjamin Emilio Marquez, 23,
of Hermiston, for attempt to elude, reckless driving, driving
while suspended/revoked, menacing, and felony parole
violation.
•Umatilla tribal police arrested Joseph Troy Johnson, 31,
of Pendleton, for disorderly conduct, public intoxication and
felony domestic abuse.
Saturday
•Hermiston police arrested Diego Lucas, 25, no address
provided, for driving under the influence of intoxicants
(alcohol).
Sunday
•Umatilla tribal police arrested Irma Taeyana Bako, 21, of
Pendleton, for trespass and felony escape.
•Pendleton police arrested Andrew Johnathon Creech,
30, no address provided, for unauthorized use of a vehicle.
•Milton-Freewater police arrested Larry Michael
Brumbach, 42, of 815 Lamb St., Milton-Freewater, for felony
failure to report as a sex offender.

James Leon Smart (Jim),
79 years old, of Weston,
Oregon, passed away in
Walla Walla, Washington, on
February 1, 2017.
He was born

1937, to Lloyd and
Lorraine (Brown)
Smart in Grove,
Oklahoma.
He
went to school in
New
Plymouth,
Idaho, where he
was raised. James
served
as
an
artillery specialist
in the U.S. Army
during the Vietnam
conflict.
He was married
on February 27, Smart
1960, to Patricia
K.
Hutsell
at
Mountain Grove, Missouri.
He was self-employed, and
also worked as a saw filer for
Louisiana Pacific.
He was a member of the
Church of Christ, worshiping
at Pendleton, Oregon. His
favorite hymn was “I’ll Fly
Away,” and his favorite
saying was “Meet me there.”
He loved family get-to-
gethers, and his hobbies
were woodworking, fishing,
camping and gardening.
James is survived by his
wife Patricia of Weston,
Oregon;
his
daughters

of Pendleton, Oregon, and
Kelly (Mike) Smart
Delay of Athena,
Oregon; his sons
Troy Smart of
Pendleton, Oregon,
and Leslie Smart

Pat was born in
John Day, Oregon,
on March 19, 1952,
to Tom and Janet
Taylor. She gradu-
ated from Pendleton
High School in
1970. She furthered
her education at
Eastern
Oregon
University where
she earned a degree
in library science VanNice
and
elementary
education.
Pat began her teaching
career in North Powder in
1979 and retired in 2013 after
serving Cove School for 24
years. Upon retiring, Pat and
her husband, Scott, spent
a year traveling the United
States and parts of Canada
in their RV and visited 45 of
the 50 states along with four
Canadian provinces.
Pat was an avid reader and
enjoyed volunteering at the
Cove Public Library. Along
with traveling and reading,
she also enjoyed quilting,
crafting, baking, and spending
time with her family.
Pat was preceded
in death by her
mother, Janet Taylor.
She is survived by
her husband, Scott
VanNice of Cove;
her father, Thomas
Taylor of Pendleton;
her brother, Mike
Taylor of Echo; her
children, Jenny and
Justin Samp and
Jason and Aimee
VanNice, both of Pendleton,
and Thomas and Christina
VanNice of Umatilla; and six
grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the
family asks that you take
time to carry on Pat’s love
of reading by sitting close to
loved ones, sharing stories,
and reading books.

In Loving Memory of Dave Walters
My heart is full of gratitude when I say many thanks to family members,
friends and neighbors for all acts of of kindness, sympathy, food,
flowers, cards,visits and kind words spoken to our family regarding
the passing of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great
grandfather Dave Waters. I want to express special appreciation to the
Honorary Pallbearers for their willingness and strength: Dr. Robert Pratt,
Richard Jennings and Cedro Rodriguez for their many words of comfort
and to the DFM Softball Girls for their touching rose tribute.
A grateful thanks to everyone who attended Dave’s Memorial and to
those who have provided generous donations to the Dave Walters
Memorial Softball Scholarship Fund. The commitment to helping the
program from the community is sincerely appreciated.
I am full of gratitude.
I would also like to express my appreciation Pioneer Chapel
for their professional arrangements and caring service.
Dave is greatly missed by by all of us that love him. He will be
remembered for his kind heart, warm smile and his love for girls softball.
