Hermiston man arrested in Walla Walla County rape case
Walla Walla Union-Bulletin
A
Hermiston
man,
accused of raping a girl
during a party last weekend
in Walla Walla County, was
arrested Thursday in his
hometown.
Gavin D. Woods, 19, was
booked into the Umatilla
County Jail in Pendleton.
He is charged in Walla
Walla County Superior Court
with first-degree rape, and
second- and fourth-degree
assault.
The charges were filed
Wednesday and a warrant
was issued for Woods’ arrest.
At some point he will
be transferred to the Walla
Walla County Jail for court
proceedings.
Officials
say
the
17-year-old victim was at a
bonfire party Saturday with
friends at a residence on Mill
Creek Road.
About midnight, Woods
allegedly followed her into
a bathroom, put his hand
around her neck and forced
her to take off her clothing.
Woods then raped the girl
in a bedroom, and slapped
her across the face when she
told him to stop, according
to a Walla Walla County
Sheriff’s Office report filed
in court. She also suffered
apparent bite marks.
Afterward, the girl — who

Judge rejects insanity claim,
convicts Oregon man of murder
GRANTS PASS (AP) — An
Oregon man has been convicted
of murder in the shooting death of
a man he once considered a father
figure.
Stranger Davis, 30, of Cave
Junction said he was suffering from
mental problems when he walked up
to Michael “Dirty” MacDonald in
broad daylight in August 2014 and
fired four rounds into his upper torso.
But Josephine County Judge
Lindi Baker rejected the insanity
defense in a nonjury trial that
concluded Wednesday, the Daily
Courier reported.
Baker also found him guilty of
being a felon in possession of a
firearm.
The judge cited extensive
evidence that Davis carefully
planned his actions. Several mental
health professionals who evaluated
Davis before trial found that his
mental health problems did not rise
to the level of criminal insanity.
Davis stole a .45-caliber pistol
from his sister’s property in Cave
Junction, prosecutors said. He wore
an orange vest and hardhat while
walking through private properties to
get to MacDonald’s cabin, so no one
would contact police, prosecutors
said.
After killing MacDonald, he fled
to a town near Chico, California,
where his mother lives, according to
THURSDAY
1:37 a.m. - This one got away, for now.
An Oregon State Police trooper tried to
stop a silver Chevrolet pickup at Southwest
17th Street and Dorion Avenue, Pendleton, for
a traffic violation. The pickup sped through a
back alley, where it could go no further. The
driver took off on foot behind a passenger.
State police reported the pickup was stolen
and notified the owner to retrieve it.
11:35 a.m. - The Walla Walla County
Sheriff’s Office asked for help from Umatilla
County sheriff’s deputies for mail theft
suspects near storage units at 84097 Highway
11, Milton-Freewater.
2:03 p.m. - A caller at Baggett Lane and
Alpine Road, Hermiston, complained about
several people riding all-terrain vehicles on
Bureau of Land Management property and
doing cookies in the county road.
3:18 p.m. - Stanfield police received a
complaint about two aggressive dogs on East
Coe Avenue near South Earl Street.
3:34 p.m. - Fire destroyed an eastbound
semi on Interstate 84 about 23 miles east of
Pendleton. Oregon State Police reported the
fire fully engulfed the semi but only caused
minor damage to the trailer. No one was
injured, and the cause was unknown at the
time.
4:52 p.m. - An Irrigon caller reported,
“Leanne spent money on her debit card which
she has since given back and stole items and
stashed them in her room.”
6:48 p.m. - Pendleton police received a
report of a large tree in the road at Southeast
Third Street and Isaac Avenue.
9:09 p.m. - Law enforcement responded
to the Stanfield RV Park, 355 S. Main St.,
Stanfield, for three or four adults “doing
something with .22 shells to make them go off
like a firecracker.”
11:48 p.m. - A caller told Umatilla police she
was the victim of an assault Wednesday night.
his arrest warrant.
Davis allegedly told authorities
that MacDonald, whom he called
“Dad,” needed to die. He said
MacDonald, 61, was a ringleader
in organized criminal activities in
the Illinois Valley of southwestern
Oregon, and had persuaded him and
others to commit a number of violent
crimes.
The defense said the trauma
suffered by Davis during his expe-
riences with MacDonald caused
him to lose his ability to reason.
Moreover, Davis asserted that
seeing MacDonald taking on another
young apprentice caused an extreme
emotional disturbance.
MacDonald lived on a property
that was known as a hub for fencing
stolen property, the Daily Courier
reported. He was named as a person
of interest in the November 2013
killing of a Cave Junction man, but
a different man was later convicted
of negligent homicide. Prosecutors
said MacDonald was a witness and
his death undercut their case.
After the verdict, Davis tearfully
addressed the judge and prosecuting
attorneys.
“Thank you for your time and
energy in this. I know that you were
just doing your jobs,” Davis said.
“I am not delusional, these things
happened but I know that doesn’t
excuse my actions.”
FRIDAY
2:33 a.m. - The Pilot Rock fire department
responded to a small blaze at a home on
Southeast Cherry Street. Reports indicate
firefighters extinguished the fire soon after
arrival and no one was in the home.
Deputy charged with harassment fired
BEND (AP) — A central Oregon
deputy who grabbed a woman's
arm after a fender-bender crash in
December has been fired.
The Bulletin reports 40-year-old
Bradley Wright was fired recently
after the Deschutes County Sheriff's
Office completed an internal investi-
gation of the incident.
Sheriff Shane Nelson says a review
of the criminal and internal investiga-
tions showed that Wright's conduct
violated office policies including
ethics and professional standards;
said she had known Woods
for a couple of months but
had not met him in person
— was able to run out of the
bedroom, the report says.
She was later examined at
Providence St. Mary Medical
Center in Walla Walla.
Woods’ criminal history
reportedly includes convic-
tions in Hermiston for disor-
derly conduct, improper use
of 911 and interfering with a
peace officer.
ARRESTS, CITATIONS
general conduct and personal conduct.
District Attorney John Hummel
charged Wright with harassment but
dropped the charge in February when
Hummel announced Wright had
completed a program which involved
community service.
Prosecutors say Wright was
off-duty when the crash occurred Dec.
24 outside a Bend Fred Meyer.
When the drivers left their vehicles
to assess damage, Wright allegedly
caused bruising by aggressively grab-
bing the 67-year-old woman's arm.

First St., Irrigon, for unauthorized use of a

Delgardo King, 47, of 110 S.E. 10th St., Irrigon,

(vandalism), all misdemeanors.
•Pendleton police arrested Mitchell Lee
Carry Moccasin, 36, of Hermiston, for offensive
littering, interfering with a peace officer,
