Mountaineers beat Raiders for CCC championship
ASHLAND — The
13th-ranked Eastern Oregon
women’s basketball team
broke a fourth-quarter tie
against No. 6 Southern
Oregon with 3-pointers on
four straight possessions
to capture the Cascade
Collegiate
Conference
Tournament championship,
74-69, on Monday night at
Mountain Avenue Gym.
EOU (28-4) and SOU
(27-4), which shared the
regular-season title, had both
already secured the CCC’s
two automatic bids to the
NAIA Division II tourna-
ment prior to the game.
The Mountaineers shook
off an ugly first quarter in
which they shot 2-of-10 from
the field and committed 10
turnovers, turning a 15-4
deficit into a 45-31 lead by the
middle of the third quarter.
After SOU forced a 56-56 tie
on Tiani Bradford’s 3 with
5:27 left, EOU got triples
on consecutive possessions

from Jessica Sexton, Reece
Bauer, Payton Parrish and
Sexton again, making it
68-59 with 3:25 to play.
Knight had team-highs of
14 points and eight rebounds,
contributing to EOU’s 43-17
advantage in bench points.
The Mounties finished
12-of-27 beyond the arc, also
getting 11 points apiece from
Parrish and Sexton.
Bradford’s 19 points and
seven rebounds paced the
Raiders, whose 27-game
home win streak was snapped.
The tournament title is
EOU’s fourth overall and
first since 2013.
Oregon Tech will play
Corban at 7 p.m. tonight in
Klamath Falls to decide the
men’s champion.

EASTERN OREGON 90,
At La Grande, the second
seeded Mountaineers fell at
home to eighth seeded Corban
on Saturday night in the CCC
semifinals, as AJ Monterossi
blitzed through the Mountie
defense to score 32 points.
In the loss, four Mountain-
eers scored in double figures
as senior guard Kentrell
Washington tallied 23 points
and nine rebounds. Senior
forward Bryan McGriff and
junior guard Blake O’Don-
nell each added 13 points
while combining for nine
rebounds and four assists.
Finishing out the double
digit scorers was senior forward
Michael Hillman who put up 11
points on 5-of-6 shooting while
grabbing five boards.
Corban out shot EOU
from the field, 50.8 percent
compared to EOU’s 42.7.
WRESTLING: Pendleton’s Holcomb, Mac-Hi’s Wells place 2nd
Continued from 1B
he didn’t have the control
needed to score the winning
points.
After rolling onto his side,
Hendon got the opening he
needed and popped his head
out of the lock and quickly
jumped on top of a prone
Diaz de Leon for the winning
points.
As Hendon acknowledged
to his own cheering section,
Diaz de Leon pleaded his
own case for a takedown to
the referees. After conferring
with each other and the scor-
er’s table, Hendon’s hand
was raised for the only state
title of his career.
That was a moment
Heppner/Ione’s Cord Flynn
had just missed out on his
junior season when he was
second at 195 pounds to
Culver’s Jaiden Jones.
The two met for the
rematch on Saturday, and this
time it was Flynn celebrating
at the end when he beat Jones
with a 7-3 score.
Jones scored first, though,
and was up 3-0 in the second
period before an escape an
immediate takedown by Flynn
knotted the score. Flynn took
a 5-3 lead into the final period
when he scored a two-point
near-fall at the buzzer.
Flynn chose the bottom
position to start, but was
quickly back on top with
a reversal in the first 10
seconds to make it 7-3, and
he was able to ride out Jones
for the win.
It was the second time
Flynn had beaten Jones this
season, and made him the
fourth state champion the
program has produced and
the first wrestler from Ione to
win a state title.
Flynn needed to win
just three matches total for
his title, but didn’t exactly
have an easy road. He beat
Culver’s Cylus Hoke 7-4 in
the quarterfinals on Friday
and Lowell’s Zachary Kint-
zley 9-3 in the semifinals
earlier Saturday.
After pinning his way
through the first three rounds,
Rockwell won his second 3A
state title with a 9-3 decision
over Kasey Collier of Glide.
Rockwell was ahead 4-1 at
the end of the first period and
was able to stay a half step
ahead of Collier the entire
match, picking up points
with takedowns.
Rockwell won his semi-
final match with a pin in 1:08
over Burns’ Kyran Simpson.
Only two other local wres-
tlers won in the semifinals
on Saturday — Pendleton
senior Morgan Holcomb and
Mac-Hi junior Spencer Wells.
Holcomb earned his third
pin of the tournament against
Lebanon’s Joseph Blisseck

in 57 seconds. That set up a
5A 160-pound final against
Dallas’s Tanner Earhart,
where Earhart prevailed by
the narrowest of margins
7-6. He had placed third as
a junior and finished with
an 8-4 record in three state
tournaments.
Wells was another state
veteran making his first trip
to the final match when he
pinned Baker’s Hudson Cole
in 3:25 in the semifinals.
He’ll be hungry to make it
back there as a senior after
losing to Cascade’s Louie
Sanchez 10-4. He’s been to
state all three years in high
school and is 7-6 overall
there.
As a team, Hermiston
placed the highest of any
locals in fourth with 138
points. Crater won the 5A
team title with 175.5 points.
Riverside also secured a
top 10 finish and was eighth
at 3A with 68 points. Nyssa
won the title with 287.
Culver won the 2A/1A
title with 202.5 points, and
Sweet Home edged Crook
County by half a point with
181 for the 4A championship.
