UCFD swears in, promotes firefighters
By JAYATI
RAMAKRISHNAN
East Oregonian
The Umatilla County Fire
District 1 welcomed seven
new firefighters — and
promoted three others — at
a swearing-in ceremony
Friday at its Westland Road
station.
The new firefighters are
Gabe Billings, Wes Blood,
Jeremy Griffith, Gaige
Phillips, Trevor Phillips,
Kyle Rutherford and Kelly
Shelton. Three current
members were promoted to
lieutenant — Matt Fisher,
Jeremy Gillette and Mathew
Hodge.
Battalion Chief Corey
Gorham congratulated the
new members, with whom

he spent the last two weeks
working at the training
academy.
“It doesn’t end at the
academy,” he said. “People
turn to you during their
worst times.” He reminded
them that their job is to help
solve peoples’ problems,
and put all of their personal
issues aside.
But he said the job is also
one of the best. “You are the
good in this world,” he said.
Fire Chief Scott Stanton
spoke in honor of the new
lieutenants, acknowledging
the leadership they provide
within the department.
“I don’t take lieutenants
lightly,” he said.
After being sworn in by
UCFD board president Ric
Sherman, each new and
promoted firefighter received
a badge and collar pin, many
of which were pinned on by
members of their families.
